A well-rounded lingerie wardrobe is made up of a few different styles. Typically, we recommend keeping 3-4 everyday bras, 2 sports bras, 2 bralettes, 1 strapless bra, 1 racerback bra, and 1 beautiful lingerie set in rotation. Of course, your lingerie wardrobe depends on your lifestyle and specific needs. An everyday bra to you could be a bra with three-part lace cups while to another person it could mean a seamless, molded bra with a full coverage fit.

One thing we can all agree on: most people have at least one demi bra or full coverage bra in their lingerie wardrobe. These are arguably two of the most popular styles when it comes to everyday bras. People love demi bras for their sexy, low-cut fit and full coverage bras for the peace of mind that they provide when it comes to fit and comfort (after all, no one wants a wardrobe malfunction at work).

So what’s the difference between a demi bra and full coverage bra? And why would someone choose one over the other? Read on to find out.

What is a demi bra?

Demi bras are beloved for their sexy fit. This popular style features wide sets straps and low cut cups that lift and center breast tissue. Demi bras come in a variety of fabrics and designs and flatter a multitude of breast shapes – from full on bottom to asymmetrical to wide set (just to name to a few).

The Marion Unlined Wire Bra, for example, features three-part demi cups, a supportive microfiber band, and wide padded straps for comfort – making this a quintessential demi bra for anyone who loves vintage-inspired lingerie.

The Charlotte Padded Bra, on the other hand, features cut-and-sewn molded cups in foam with a satin overlay. Unlike the Marion Unlined Wire Bra, which enhances your natural shape, the Charlotte Padded Bra provides more of a rounded shape under clothing.

What is a full coverage bra?

Full coverage bras provide comfortable coverage and support for all bra sizes. This style is designed to minimize cleavage. As such, full coverage bras are perfect for work or school, when you want a little more coverage and the attention on you and not your bust.

The Jeanie T-Shirt Bra is a full coverage style that features smooth molded cups for opacity. The soft padding adds an extra layer of coverage and prevents nipples from showing through clothing.

what is a full coverage bra

Enora Minimizer Bra | Enora Bikini in Raspberry

The Enora Minimizer Bra is an example of a full coverage cut-and-sewn bra. A true minimizer bra, the multi-part, minimal stretch cups visually reduce the bustline by 1-1.5 inches. If you’ve been looking for a supportive minimizer bra for large breasts, you may want to give the Enora Minimizer Bra a try.

Which style is right for you?

Demi bras and full coverage have their perks, but it really depends on your breast shape and style preferences. Next time you’re shopping for new bras, be sure to try on both styles. You might be pleasantly surprised by their very different fits and find a new favorite!

The Emma Plunge Molded Bra is a seamless contour bra with a plunging neckline. It features foam molded cups with a microfiber overlay and a microfiber band. The short center panel and low plunging neckline lift, center, and shape breast tissue – no push-up padding needed.

The enclosed top and bottom band elastics provide comfort. The seamless cups virtually disappear under t-shirts and form-fitting tops and dresses. This style can also be worn in an X-back style by crisscrossing the detachable straps in back.

what bra to wear under plunging neckline

Emma Plunge Molded Bra | Emma Hipster in Black

The Emma Plunge Molded Bra is a supportive plunge bra designed to be worn under your favorite t-shirts. The low plunging fit lifts and enhances breast tissue without the use of push-up padding – making the cups lighter than they would be in a push-up bra.

If you’re looking for a supportive contour bra that you can wear under low cut and v-neck tops and dresses, this could be your new favorite. This style is reminiscent of the Jeanie Plunge Molded Bra and Casey Plunge Molded Bra.

A few fit tips: When trying on bras, be sure to scoop all of your breast tissue into the cups to get the best fit. Plunge bras are constructed to bring breast tissue to the center of the bra for maximum cleavage. If you’re wearing the right size and your breast tissue is spilling out of the cups near the center panel (or if you’re experiencing gaping at the top of the cups), a demi bra may work better for you. With any bra, your breast shape will help determine if it’s a good style for you or not.

The Emma Hipster is a hipster cut panty in all-over microfiber. This style has the perfect amount of stretch – it will cling to curves without digging in or riding up. The smooth microfiber fabric makes this an ideal style to wear under loose fitting skirts and dresses and the hipster fit provides more coverage than a bikini or thong panty. Overall, it’s a comfortable option to wear at home or out with a favorite outfit.

Care

 washing bras

Proper care is crucial if you want your lingerie to last. We recommend washing bras and panties in cold water and avoiding the dryer at all costs. Hand washing lingerie is the gentlest option (as it involves the least amount of agitation), but machine washing on the delicate cycle is also an option if you don’t have time to hand wash. If you do machine wash your bras, be sure to hook them first, separate the colors (bright colors may bleed onto your light-colored bras), and sort them into mesh lingerie bags. Panties should also be sorted by color and placed in separate bags so the bra hooks don’t snag delicate underwear.

To wash, use a gentle detergent or laundry soap designed for lingerie and wash them on a delicates cycle in cold water. Once they’re washed, either hang dry them (drape the center front of the bra over the hanger – don’t hang a wet bra by its straps) or lay them flat to dry (away from sunlight which can cause the colors to fade over time) with the cups facing up.

Lastly, be extra careful when storing your bras. For molded bras, line them up in a drawer with the cups facing up – one bra in front of the other. Unlined bras, bralettes, and non-molded sports bras can be folded in half and stacked on top of each other to save space. Panties can be folded and sorted by color or style in a lingerie drawer.

A racerback bra is an essential part of any lingerie wardrobe. This supportive style makes it possible to wear racerback tops and dresses without your bra being on display. Racerback bras are also a great option for anyone with narrow shoulders, as the close-set strap design is guaranteed to stay on shoulders.

Another benefit: the front closure makes it easier for those with limited mobility to put on and take off their bra without any help needed. Additionally, the front closure design and cup construction require a low center panel, so this bra works for a multitude of breast shapes, too.

In this guide, we’re answering your most common questions about racerback bras. Read on for the scoop.

What does a racerback bra do?

A racerback bra is designed to be worn under racerback tops and dresses. The design helps to keep straps from falling off shoulders while lifting and supporting breast tissue. The front closure and small center closure helps the bra to tack against the sternum for a snug and supportive fit.

Keep in mind that Y-back bras, T-back bras, and racerback bras all have the same function and are all designed similarly but with slight differences in the strap platform design.

What are some of the benefits of wearing a racerback bra?

Aside from the close-set strap design, racerback bras are also bandless. This means that there isn’t any additional fabric below the cups’ wire channels. Bandless bras are just as supportive as banded bras, but their minimalist design means they’re less likely to dig into the skin below your bustline.

What do I need to know before buying a racerback bra?

Unlike your favorite t-shirt bras and strapless bras, racerback bras fasten in the front – not the back. This means that the band of a racerback bra can’t be adjusted with wear. The size you buy will inevitably stretch a little with wear, so you’ll want to buy a racerback bra that fits snug without feeling uncomfortable to get the most out of it.

Which racerback bra should I choose?

Racerback bras come in a variety of different fabrics and colors. Your outfits will determine what type of racerback bra you’ll need. For example, if you’re looking for a racerback bra with smooth, seamless cups to wear under fitted racerback tops and tanks, the Deco Y-Back Front Closure Bra is a phenomenal choice. If you’re searching for a racerback bra with beautiful design details that look pretty when peeking out of a sweater or top, the Nouveau Racerback Bra is what you need.

What size racerback bra should I buy?

Racerback bras can be tricky to shop for. When it comes to sizing, a racerback bra is one that you’ll want to try on in store, if you can. Because they lack the adjustability of a back hook and eye closure, racerback bras may fit snugger in the band than you’re used to.

You may need to opt for your sister size (up one size in the band and down one size in the cup) to get a good fit, but be careful not to choose a racerback bra that is too loose in the band as it may end up stretching and being too big for you over time.

If you’re having any trouble with finding a supportive racerback bra, a bra fitter at a local lingerie store can help you out.

Final considerations

Shopping for a racerback bra is just like shopping for any other bra style. To get the best fit, look for a racerback bra that completely encapsulates your breasts within the cups, fits snug (but not uncomfortable) around the ribcage, and feels supportive and comfortable throughout.

Elissa Low Back Bustier

Construction

longline bridal bustier

Elissa Low Back Bustier in Nude

The Elissa Low Back Bustier is a strapless longline bra with padded molded cups. True to its longline silhouette, this stunning style smoothes and contours the waist and hips with a firm fit and strategic boning. The foam-lined padded cups are covered in smooth microfiber and molded for a seamless look under clothing.

The anti-slip silicone tape on the inside of the cups helps to keep the cups in place. The low back design further adds to its versatility. The multi-hook back closure and wide bottom band ensure that the bustier doesn’t budge. Beautiful lace details down the center of the bustier are a chic finishing touch.

Fit

longline bustier

Elissa Low Back Bustier | Elissa Bikini in Black

The Elissa Low Back Bustier is a new addition to the Elissa collection. This stunning collection also features a supportive strapless bra and bikini panty with sheer lace panels. Unlike the strapless bra and bikini, the Elissa Low Back Bustier is pared down with less lace. In fact, the only lace you’ll find is on the vertical center panel of the bra. Other than that, the bra is constructed in microfiber.

If you’re shopping for a longline bustier, you might be having trouble deciding which fabric to choose. After all, longline bras come in many different styles with varying degrees of padding and support. Though lace is always beautiful, microfiber does have its perks. Due to the nature of the fabric, your dresses and tops will glide over it – making it easier to zip into a form-fitting outfit. Additionally, the cups of the Elissa Low Back Bustier are seamless for a clean line, so you won’t have to worry about the bra cups showing underneath clothing. It’s an excellent alternative to a waist trainer or corset if you’re looking for a little smoothing and shaping.

A few fit tips: The body of the bustier is firm with a hint of stretch. This style is designed to mold to the contours of the body. If you’ve worn a waist trainer or corset before, you’ll likely feel at home with the snug fit. However, if you’re not used to a snug fit, you may want to try on your sister size (one size bigger in the band and one size smaller in the cup) and see how it feels.

When shopping for a longline bra, it’s best to pick the size that fits well in the cups and feels snug – not uncomfortable or painful – through the body. It should feel like a big hug around your ribcage. Bustiers can take some getting used to if they’re new to you, so don’t be afraid to wear it around the house (as it will stretch a little with wear) before the wedding or big event so you can get used to the fit. Lastly, if you find that a bustier isn’t the right choice for you, opt for a strapless bra instead.

The low back design is one of the best features of the Elissa Low Back Bustier – making it a beautiful foundation for a wedding dress or special occasion dress. This bra works best with fitted dresses and tops that have ruching or design details to camouflage the boning (a very important design component for bustiers as it helps the bustier to keep its shape). A form-fitting dress that has an a-line or skater skirt would be a great choice. This style may show through thin, clingy dresses and tops, so please keep that in mind when shopping for a bustier.

The Elissa Low Back Bustier is available in Black, Pearl White, and Nude.

Charlotte Padded Bra

Construction

does padded bra increase breast size

Charlotte Padded Bra | Charlotte Highwaist Brief in Woodrose

The Charlotte Padded Bra is a contour bra with an iconic, vintage-inspired design. Though this style looks like a molded bra from the outside, it’s actually designed with three-part cups with light foam padding for opacity and shaping. The side support, or side sling, functions to lift and center breast tissue for a more projected and rounded shape. The low cut design of the demi cups works for a multitude of necklines and further adds to the versatility of this style.

The leotard back helps to keep the wide set straps from falling off the shoulders. The power mesh-lined band provides a firm and snug fit for maximum support. The curved seams on the cups are a beautiful and eye-catching design detail.

Fit

when do you need a padded bra

Charlotte Padded Bra | Charlotte Highwaist Brief in Dusty Rose

The Charlotte Padded Bra is a supportive contour bra available in B to K cup sizes. It’s also one of our most popular bra styles and it has been around for a long time.

Coming from a bra fitter’s perspective, getting a great fit in the Charlotte Padded Bra really comes down to knowing your breast shape, whether your breast tissue is shallow or projected or somewhere in between, your breast root shape, the wire that works best for your shape, and, lastly, what a well-fitting bra looks like on. Like any bra style, this style may not work for everyone.

However, it is worth trying on if you are full-busted, or if you have shallow on top and full on bottom (FOB) breasts, or asymmetrical breasts. The padding helps to even out asymmetrical breasts to make them more symmetrical and the demi cup shape works to lift FOB breast tissue to balance the shallowness on top.

A few fit notes: The power mesh band provides a snug fit akin to shapewear, so depending on your body shape and fit preferences, your bra sister size may provide a better fit (one band size larger and one cup size smaller). We recommend starting with your regular bra size as a guide and adjusting the sizing from there.

Remember: Your sister size will not fit exactly the same as your regular bra size. Your bra sister size closely matches the cup volume of your regular bra size, but the placement of the wire will be slightly different due to the way that bras are graded.

We recommend visiting your local lingerie store to try it on in person to make sure you get the best fit. If you’re trying your bras on at home, do so in front of a mirror so you can see the fit and keep our bra fitting guide as a reference if you’re having trouble determining if the bras are a good fit or not.

Elissa Strapless Bra

Construction

where to buy strapless bra

Elissa Strapless Bra | Elissa Bikini in Nude

The Elissa Strapless Bra is a strapless contour bra with lightly padded molded cups and beautiful lace details. The seamless molded cups shape and contour the bust while providing a rounded shape under clothing that offers more coverage than a demi cup strapless bra. The snug band is lined with power mesh for a firm fit. The band also features side boning to keep the bra from rolling up or down so it stays in place. The straps are adjustable and removable.

The lace on the center front and wings adds a beautiful touch to an otherwise practical style. The Elissa Strapless Bra can be worn several different ways – regular, strapless, racerback, and halter – by changing the placement of the straps.

Fit

how to keep a strapless bra up

Elissa Strapless Bra | Elissa Bikini in Black

The Elissa Strapless Bra offers phenomenal support for D+ cup sizes. The firm fit of the band helps to keep the bra in place and works with the cups to provide light lift for breast tissue. The silicone anti-slip tape on the inner cups and wings helps the bra to adhere to the skin for additional stability. The foam padded cups and microfiber fabrication of the Elissa Strapless Bra feel well-made and fully capable of supporting full busts.

When shopping for a strapless bra, a snug fitting band is key. You’ve probably heard that 80-85% of a bra’s support comes from its band. Since strapless bras lack straps, you’ll need a snug (not tight) fit for the bra to stay in place. You might find that your strapless bras fit snugger than your everyday bras. With a strapless bra, it may be worth trying your bra sister size (smaller band size and bigger cup size) to get the best fit. Ideally, you want the bra to fit snug (like a hug around your ribcage) without feeling uncomfortable or painful so it stays up and in place since the straps are no longer there to contribute to the fit.

Care

washing bras

The Aline T-Shirt Bra is a contour bra designed to be worn under t-shirts. The smooth microfiber fabrication features a tone-on-tone striped pattern. The molded cups are lightly padded for comfort, coverage, and opacity and the underwire helps to help the bust completely encompassed within the cups. The microfiber band stretches moderately and fits comfortably. The wide-set straps are padded for comfort. The U-back, or leotard back, is designed to keep straps from falling off the shoulders.

Overall, the Aline T-Shirt Bra is a chic molded bra that works for a multitude of breast shapes. The fit is supportive, yet comfortable and the fabric is smooth and soft.

One of the biggest benefits of the Aline T-Shirt Bra is its bandless design. Bandless simply means that the bra is constructed without additional fabric below the wire channel. A bandless fit is a great option for full busts and plus size busts, as it won’t dig into the skin under the breasts. You may find a bandless bra to be more comfortable than a banded style if you’re looking for a comfortable bra to wear every day or a bra to wear to work that you won’t want to take off after a few hours.

Compared to the Emma Plunge Molded Bra, the Aline T-Shirt Bra provides more of a full coverage fit. Its fit is closest to the Jeanie T-Shirt Bra.

This bra fits true to size. When trying on a t-shirt bra, be sure to bring a favorite t-shirt with you, so you can see what it looks like under clothing. With a t-shirt, you’ll be able to determine if the bra will provide the seamless look you’re searching for in the fitting room.

The Aline Bikini is a bikini cut panty in all-over subtly striped microfiber. The fabric has a matte and shiny contrast with a slight sheen overall. All of the panels are made of the same fabric. The thin elastic at the waistband and leg openings stretches comfortably and doesn’t feel restricting.

The grosgrain bow at center front is a pretty addition, but it can be removed if you prefer a no-frills look. This panty isn’t seamless, so it may show under leggings and jeans, but it works well under flowy skirts and dresses. Pair with the matching Aline T-Shirt Bra for a chic and classy lingerie set.

The Adriana Lace Bralette is a wireless bralette with an all-over lace fabrication. This wire-free bralette features soft cups in lace with vertical seams to shape and contour the bust. The cups are lined for opacity and designed to enhance your natural shape. The wide elastic band is lined in power mesh for firm support. Boning in the band helps to keep the bra from rolling up throughout the day.

Support, comfort, and fit are the core components of this beautiful bralette. The wide straps decked out in lace look pretty peeking out of a top or sweater – no need to hide your straps. The wide cut of the straps offers lightweight padding for shoulders.

The Adriana Lace Bralette can be worn regular or criss-cross with the J-hook at back. The wide band and multi-hook and eye further enhance the fit.

If you’re looking for a supportive bralette that will support your full bust, this is the bralette for you. The construction and fit of the Adriana Lace Bralette makes it a great bra for everyday wear. It can also be worn lounging or as a sleep bra.

Due to the fabrication, the band of this bralette fits snug. Depending on your preferences, you may want to try your sister size (one band size bigger and one cup size smaller) for the best fit. Additionally, your sister size may also come in handy if you’re looking for a bralette to wear to sleep.

Remember: You don’t want to wear a bra that is too snug to bed. Ideally, you want the bra to feel like a gentle hug around your ribcage while providing lightweight support and comfort for your bust. If the boning and power mesh-lined band is more support than you need, try the Ciara Bralette instead.

In this series, we’re sharing our favorite styles (and a few reasons why you’re sure to love them too.)

Parfait Active Sports Bra

Construction

how to choose a perfect sports bra

Parfait Active Sports Bra P5542 in Rabbit/White

The Parfait Active Wireless Sports Bra is a wire-free sports bra designed for low to medium impact sports. This wireless style is a supportive alternative to a sports bra with underwire. The cups are lined for opacity and feature strategic seams to contour and shape the bust. The minimal stretch fit of the cups helps to keep your bust in place throughout your workout.

This sports bra is more than just a pretty design. Each design detail serves a purpose. The sheer mesh top provides breathability and helps to wick moisture away from the skin. The straps can be worn regular or criss-cross by the sliding the hooks into different slots – making this a great sports bra for anyone with narrow shoulders or anyone who struggles with their bra straps falling off their shoulders.

how to buy a sports bra

Parfait Active Sports Bra P5542 in Tea Berry

Finding a supportive wireless sports bra can be challenging, but the Parfait Active Wireless Sports Bra excels in this area. The snug, supportive band is cut wide with a firm fit to secure the bra in place and keep it from rolling up. The seamed cups provide light lift for the bust without compressing the breast tissue in an unflattering way. The moisture-wicking Coolpass fabric feels comfortable and durable. The sheer breathable mesh panel makes the full coverage fit feel modern and sexy (which can be hard to do with a sports bra in D+ cup sizes when support typically takes priority over style). Lastly, the wide band and multi-hook and eye closure make it easy to customize the fit.

This sports bra fits true to size. When shopping for a new sports bra, remember that a sports bra will likely fit snugger than your regular bras because of its fabrication and function. That doesn’t mean that the sports bra should feel tight; instead, it should feel comfortably snug. Even with a wireless style like this one, you’ll still want to make sure that your breast tissue is completely contained within the bust seams.

If you don’t like how underwire feels in a sports bra and you’re looking for more support than a lightweight yoga bra, the Parfait Active Wireless Sports Bra is definitely worth trying on.

Everyone wants to learn from an expert, so learning about lingerie from a bra fitter is a natural fit. Aside from being experts on bra fitting, bra fitters are excellent bra match-makers and brilliant shopping partners. Their intimate understanding of the intricacies of bra design coupled with their experience fitting people of all shapes and sizes makes bra shopping fun (and much easier than it would be if you shopped on your own.)

While we recommend getting regular bra fittings every six to twelve months to make sure you’re wearing the best fitting bras, you don’t have to get a bra fitting every time you shop for bras. Bra fitters are great personal shoppers – they can hand pick bras for you to try that work for your bra size, breast shape, style, comfort preferences, and budget. They know the fit of all the styles in the store and can speak to the size and fit variances from brand to brand. Whether you have a full bust, petite bust, small cup size, big cup size, asymmetrical breasts, pendulous breasts, or another of the myriad of breast shapes, bra fitters are your best bet for finding bras that feel incredible and fit amazing.

Here are just a few things a bra fitter can teach you:

How to determine if you’re wearing a bra that fits well

You might be trying on the bra size that you normally wear, but that doesn’t automatically mean the bra will be a good fit. Bra sizes can vary from brand to brand, so it’s not uncommon to wear a different size in a new-to-you brand or find out that one style works better for you than the others.

When you’re judging the fit of a bra, there are four key components you should pay attention to: the fit of the cups, the fit of the band, the fit of the straps, and the fit of the center panel, or center gore. Of course, unfortunately, with some breast shapes, you may have trouble finding a style that tacks well against your sternum or a plunge bra that doesn’t push your breast tissue out the center (which can be very frustrating). But a bra fitter will take your unique shape into account and show you what to look for in a bra that fits well – no matter what your bra size or breast shape is.

Why it’s important to choose a bra based on its fit and not its size

A good bra fitter will take the time to educate you on bra fitting. She might even tell you to not look at the tag when trying on bras. Why? Rest assured it’s nothing personal. She’s more concerned about the fit and wants you to pay attention to that above all else. A 34DD in one brand may fit completely different from a 34DD in another. Your bra size is meant to be more of a guide than a set rule. You might find that a bra fits you better in your sister size than the size you’d normally choose. The size becomes irrelevant when you find a bra that fits like a glove.

Which styles work best for your bust (and which ones don’t)

Ever walk into the fitting room with a dozen bras and walk out wondering why none of them fit? You’re not alone. Bra shopping is a challenging, stressful, and frustrating experience for so many people. But bra fitters get it. They spend a lot of time learning about how each brand’s styles fit and how they look on different breast shapes, so they know exactly which bras to recommend for you to try. No need to bring a bunch of bras into the fitting room and hope for the best. A bra fitter will hand pick them for you.

Pro tips

Bra fitters are lingerie experts, so it makes sense that they would be our number one choice for help with bra fitting and bra shopping. As a fellow bra fitter, nothing makes us happier than sharing our knowledge and educating people on lingerie. It’s something we’re very passionate about.

Next time you’re shopping for bras at your local lingerie boutique, get to know the bra fitters and don’t be afraid to ask them your lingerie questions. They’re there to help you!
