We all have that go-to bra that’s a favorite. And, sometimes we try to ignore the fact that it’s time to let it go. You need to toss the bra when it’s no longer doing its job. Wondering if you can hold onto it for just a little longer? The answer is no if you can raise a hand to any of these statements.

Here are six signs it’s time to toss your favorite bra:

1.  The underwire is poking through the fabric.

It’s time to buy a new bra if you can see the underwire. Underwire that’s poking through your bra’s fabric is annoying and painful. Unfortunately, there’s no good way to reverse this damage. The underwire is strategically designed and inserted into the bra to provide support. So, pushing the underwire back into the bra won’t guarantee the bra will return to its original state.

2.  It’s falling apart.

Signs of wear and tear may seem cosmetic. However, a bra that’s falling apart can’t do its job. Did the clasp break on your bra band? You can’t get ample support from creating a work-around on a broken clasp. The band needs to fit you exactly because it provides the most support. Is the elastic becoming exposed? The elastic is probably stretched. Are your straps fraying? The elastic in the straps likely stretched, too. It’s time to toss that favorite bra if it’s falling apart.

3.  It’s too small…

It’s possible that a bra once fit well, but is now too small. Your bra size may have changed, and this is perfectly normal. But, you shouldn’t continue wearing a bra that’s too small. If it’s in good condition, donate the bra. But if you can’t make yourself part with it, store it away for a later day. (But seriously. Will you even like the style when you can fit into it again?) Either way, you must stop wearing it!

4.  …or it’s too big.

You can outgrow your favorite bra, and your bra can outgrow you, too. (Well, figuratively speaking.) A bra that’s too big certainly can’t do its job. And, it won’t make you feel good about yourself either. Some signs that your bra is too big include gaps in the cups, falling straps or a band that rides up. It’s time to toss a bra if it’s too big.

5.  It’s no longer supportive.

Your bra is designed to lift your bust. Even a favorite bra will fail at this over time. The fabric becomes weak. The elastic is stretched. The cups begin to lose their shape. All of these things hinder the bra from hugging your body and lifting your breasts. Replace your bra if it’s no longer being supportive.

6.  You don’t like how you look in it.

A bra that fits you well will boost your confidence. You’ll like how you look in it and your clothes will fit better, too. If your bra isn’t boosting your confidence, it’s time to get rid of it.

As sad as it is, you must let go of your favorite bra eventually. Don’t keep telling yourself that you can keep it for one more month, or that the bra isn’t that old. A bra doesn’t have to be old to no longer suit you. Toss the bra, and go bra shopping. But, get a bra fitting first because your bra size may have changed since your last fitting. You may even find your personal style has changed, too. Finding the perfect, new bra will make you wonder why you held on to that old bra for so long.

You’ve probably been handed various bras to try on after a bra fitting. Have you ever been given a bra that’s not the size the bra fitting suggested? You were probably wondering why you were even measured if you’re not going to try on that size. But to your surprise, the bra fits. And it fits well.

What?! You ask yourself, “Is it normal to wear more than one bra size?” Yes, it’s completely normal for more than one bra size to fit! Many women have different sized bras in their lingerie drawer. And, they can easily go from bra to bra without noticing a difference in the fit.

We’re going to explain why women can wear different bra sizes and why it’s absolutely fine. Read on!

Understanding how bra sizes work:

Understanding how bra sizes work helps you also understand why more than one bra size may fit. You know that a bra size comes down to two things – the cups and the band. Measurements of the circumference of your ribcage and your bust are taken to get these two sizes. But, did you also know that the cup size doesn’t remain the same as the band size increases? Hence why, let’s say, a 34B looks different than a 38B. The cup size – though still technically a B-cup – must change slightly to accommodate the band size. The majority of a bra’s support comes from the band. However, the cups must adjust to the band size to help provide adequate support.

Related: Bra Sizing Explained: Here’s How Bra Sizing Works

Your bra size has a sister size.

Your bra sister size can hold a similar volume of breast tissue in the cups. And, sister sizing is why two different bra sizes may fit.  We mentioned above that the cup size increases when the band size increases – though the cup size remains the same letter cup size. This is so the cups can hold more volume. So, if you wear a 36C, your bra sister size would be a 38B. The cup size increases and the band size decreases, resulting in a similar cup volume.

Knowing your bra sister size is super helpful when bra shopping. You can find your sister size if a store is out of stock in your size, or if your size doesn’t feel quite right.

Different brands may fit you differently.

Two different bras that are the same exact size may fit differently. This is because the fit can vary by brand and by fabric type. You may wear a 32B in one brand, yet find that a 32B in another brand is too snug on your breasts. This is where knowing your sister size comes in handy. The small adjustment in your sister size may be just what you need for the bra to fit well.

While it’s totally normal for more than one bra size to fit, it’s important to always know your true bra size. We suggest starting every bra shopping trip with a bra fitting. Your bra size may have changed for a variety of reasons, and a fitting ensures you’ll find the right fit. Once you know your measurements, you can easily test out bra sister sizes and feel confident that you’re making the right sizing choice.

Bras aren’t meant to last forever – although sometimes we wish our favorites would! We’ve all had that dreaded moment when a favorite bra no longer works. Did you ignore the warning signs that your bra was biting the dust? Or, did you not know what signs to look for? That won’t happen again because we’ve got you covered!

Hera are six signs that it’s time to toss a bra:

1.  It doesn’t fit like it once did.

The biggest sign that it’s time to toss your bra is when it doesn’t fit like it used to. Your bra stretches as it ages. The elastic becomes loose, and the bra no longer hugs your body like it did when you bought it. If you’re wondering why a newer bra has already stretched, it could be due to poor care. Drying your bra in the dryer can affect its fit. The heat will slowly deteriorate the bra’s elasticity, causing the bra to stretch.

Unfortunately, you can’t reverse the effects of a stretched bra. Head to your local lingerie store when your bra is no longer fitting you like it should.

2.  The band is stretched out.

As your bra stretches – due to lots of wear or laundering mistakes – it begins to lose its shape. The bra’s shape is what helps support your breasts. Maybe a bra that once gave you a beautiful lift is no longer lifting at all. Or, maybe the cups or band have stretched a bit, not fully supporting your bust. If the bra isn’t being supportive, give it the boot.

3.  The bra does nothing for your confidence.

Another sign that it’s time to toss a bra is that it doesn’t make you feel confident. It certainly won’t help your confidence if the bra doesn’t fit you well or support your bust anymore. Perhaps it’s just dingy, and you no longer feel excited to put it on or pretty when you wear it. Wearing the wrong size bra will also kill your confidence. But don’t trash a bra just because it’s no longer your size. Donate gently worn bras instead.

4.  The underwire is popping out.

Exposed underwire can be painful and annoying – and it’s a major sign it’s time for a new bra! The underwire is no longer doing its job when it pops out of your bra. It’s not supporting your breasts or providing structure to your bra. (If you wanted less support, you would have bought a wire-free bra, right?) Don’t “just deal” with exposed underwire or try to push it back in – get a new bra.

5.  It’s dirty, and the stains won’t wash off.

While some bra stains be cosmetic only, others can be signs of a deteriorating bra. A wine stain on a bra won’t change the bra’s effectiveness, it just makes it less pretty. However, sweat stains may indicate that you’re not taking care of your bra. Sweat and body oils can break down a bra’s fabric when the bra isn’t washed often. If you feel like your bra doesn’t fit like it did before, plus you see stains, it may be time to toss it.

6.  The straps are loose or frayed.

Your bra straps are designed to help keep your bra in place, so it remains supportive. Loose straps can’t perform that job. And fraying straps could pop at any moment. Start bra shopping before your bra unexpectedly turns into a one-shoulder bra.

It may be sad to say goodbye to a bra, but shopping for a new one will quickly make you forget the old one. Don’t put off the inevitable if your bra is showing signs it’s biting the dust. Toss it, get a bra fitting and find a beauty to add to your lingerie drawer.

Going bra shopping can be excited and daunting. There are numerous bra styles and sizes available, so knowing where to start is sometimes intimidating. Of course, you should always start bra shopping by getting a professional bra fitting. This is when a lingerie professional measures your bust to determine what size bra size you should be wearing. But fits can vary among bras – even two bras that are the same size. So, it’s essential to know how to tell if a bra fits.

Here are the nine elements of a perfect fitting bra:

1.  There are no gaps in the cups.

The first, and one of the most obvious, factors to check for in a bra are gaps in the cups. Is there any space between your breast and the cup? If so, you need a different bra size. The cups should hug your breasts snugly.

2.  You don’t have boob spillage.

Another easy factor to check for is boob spillage. The bra cups should fit you snugly, but not so much that your breast tissue spills out of them. If you don’t have under-boob, excess side boob or a bulge over your cups, the bra could be the one.

3.  The bra stays in place when you move.

A bra that truly fits will stay in place when you move. Sit down and hunch over. Stand up and bend over. Does the bra stay in place and continue to hug your body? The bra should remain in place so wearing it feels effortless throughout the day.

4.  You can fit two fingers under the band.

It’s suggested that you should be able to comfortably fit two fingers beneath your bra band. This ensures that your bra band isn’t too tight. It’s not comfortable – nor is it a factor of a good-fitting bra – for the band to squeeze your back.

how should a bra fit

5.  You don’t have to adjust the bra.

A bra that fits you well won’t require adjustments. Keep the bra on for a few minutes. Did you need to adjust your boobs back into the bra after wiggling and moving around? Do you need to adjust the bra after a few minutes of simply sitting in it? You’re on the right track if the bra continues to support and lift your bust without needing to adjust it.

 6.  The straps don’t dig into your shoulders.

Comfortable-fitting straps is another element of a good-fitting bra. The bra straps aren’t meant to carry the weight of your bust. They are simply there to help keep the bra in place. Bra straps that dig into your shoulders are a sign that the bra band isn’t the right size.

 7.  The underwire doesn’t poke you.

A bra with underwire isn’t supposed to be uncomfortable. The underwire is there to provide additional support. So, you shouldn’t be feeling any underwire poking your boobs, ribs, etc.

 8.  You’re comfortable in the bra.

Comfort is a major factor to look for in a bra. You’ll be wearing the bra for several hours at a time, so it’s essential that you’re comfortable. This is another reason why you should keep the bra on for a few minutes. Give your body time to notice any discomfort.

9.  You feel confident in the bra.

A bra that fits you well will boost your confidence. You’ll love how it flatters your figure and shapes your bustline. And, you’ll love how you look in it.

Bra fittings help find your true bra size. And, lingerie professionals are there to assist you in finding a bra style and fit you love. Of course, there’s no one there to check the fit if you’re bra shopping online. Whether you’re shopping in-store or online, it’s helpful to understand what to look for in a bra. That way, you can trust that you and your body know what fits.

Planning on buying lingerie for your significant other this Valentine’s Day? Great! That’s a wonderful gift idea she’ll love. Buying lingerie as a gift can get a little tricky because of the sizing and various styles. But, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you hit this one out of the park.

Here are the do’s and don’ts of buying lingerie for Valentine’s Day:

Do check her size before shopping.

It’s essential you check your partner’s lingerie size before lingerie shopping. Look at her bras, panties, nighties, teddies, etc., and jot down her size in each category. This ensures you don’t just “eyeball it” when buying lingerie. If you’re lingerie shopping in a store, having her sizes makes the process more efficient. The lingerie associate can show you items in the right sizes, so you don’t waste time.

Do stay within her style.

Make note of your partner’s lingerie style as you’re checking her sizes. These styles will guide you in buying lingerie as a gift. Does she prefer wide band panties? Does she have a lot of sheer lace intimates? Does she have more teddies or chemises? Does she have a matching bra and panty set? (If she doesn’t have a matching set, don’t think she wouldn’t love one! Matching lingerie sets are a luxury that many women don’t invest in.) Choose garments that are within her general style, and you’re on the right track.

Do choose something you’ll both love.

Choose lingerie that you’ll love seeing her in, and she’ll love wearing. If you’re sticking to a lingerie style she has, she’ll likely love it. But, you should make sure you’re excited about your selection as well.

Don’t assume the lingerie associate will know your partner’s size.

Never assume that a lingerie associate can help you find the right size. Weight, height and clothing size do not determine a woman’s lingerie size. The lingerie size is found by taking various measurements around her bust. This is why it’s so important to check your partner’s size before lingerie shopping.

Don’t assume one size really fits all.

Some lingerie items have only one size – “one size fits all.” (OSFA) This is most common in some thongs and teddies, but certainly not all. It’s best to not buy lingerie that is sized as OSFA. Most of the time, one size can’t possibly fit all women. You’ll have more luck finding an item that fits if you select her actual size when buying lingerie.

Don’t try to experiment with a wild style.

There are countless lingerie styles available, and all are gorgeous. So, it can be tempting to gift her a wildly sexy piece of lingerie she’s never tried. However, this type of surprise isn’t always best. Buying lingerie that’s far outside her comfort zone could make her feel insecure. Buy something you know she’ll love, and she’ll be confident when wearing it. (After all, confidence is the sexiest trait.)

If you’re thinking to yourself, “My bra hurts,” – it’s likely because it’s not your size. Sometimes you can tell a bra is the wrong size just by looking in the mirror. Other times, you can literally feel it’s the wrong size – because wearing the wrong bra size can be painful.

If you’re experiencing any discomfort from wearing a bra, it’s time to get a bra fitting. Here are six painful signs that you’re wearing the wrong bra size:

1.  The underwire pokes you.

Bras with underwire should provide support, not discomfort. You’re wearing the wrong bra size if the underwire – or boning – is poking your sides or boobs. Sometimes the underwire may poke through the bra’s fabric. This happens for a couple reasons. The bra may be at the end of its lifespan, possibly due poor care or laundering of the bra. Or, the bra hasn’t fit you well for a long time and is now breaking down.

2.  The straps dig into your shoulders.

Do your bra straps leave dents in your shoulders? If so, you’re probably wearing the wrong bra size! Shoulder soreness is a sign that your bra band isn’t doing its job. The band could be too loose, putting too much pressure on the straps. This requires your straps to carry the weight of your breasts. But, that’s not the job of the bra straps at all! The cups, front band and side bands should support your boobs.

3.  The band squeezes your back.

Popular (but incorrect) belief is that a bra band will always squeeze your back. False! Where’s the comfort in having your skin squeezed? A bra band should be tight. This ensures it doesn’t ride up on your back and cause stress on the bra straps. However, you should typically be able to insert two fingers between your back and bra strap. Try loosening the bra band if it’s squeezing you. If that doesn’t help, it’s time for a bra fitting. (Remember, you shouldn’t be wearing your bra on the tightest or loosest hook! Ideally, you should fasten it on the second hook, so you have room for adjustment.)

4.  The cups squeeze your boobs.

The cups of your bra should hug your boobs for proper support. But, the cups shouldn’t squeeze them to the point where it’s uncomfortable. Head to your local lingerie store for a bra fitting if your bra is squeezing your breasts and causing a lot of boob spill-over.

5.  The front band sits on your boobs.

Do you have an under-boob situation? This can happen when the center panel of the bra (called the gore) doesn’t sit flat on your chest. The gore and the underwire should not be lifted or sitting on your breasts. This can be super uncomfortable and is usually a sign that your bra is too small. Instead, the underwire should sit firmly on your ribcage, and gore should touch your chest. This makes sure that the bra stays in place and remains supportive. Plus, it provides you a comfortable separation of the breasts – because no one wants to have a uni-boob.

6.  You’re just uncomfortable in the bra.

Bras aren’t meant to be uncomfortable. In fact, you shouldn’t be able to tell that you’re even wearing one when it fits you well. If you’re generally uncomfortable in your bra, you’re probably wearing the wrong bra size.

How you feel in your bra plays a major factor in your day. Don’t let bra discomfort steal your joy. Get a bra fitting stat if you experience any signs of wearing the wrong bra size! Being comfortable and confident in your bra is invaluable.

The start of the new year is an excellent time to replace old bras. After all, new year, new you – right? But don’t run off to the lingerie stores just yet. Create a sort of strategy so you don’t come home empty-handed And, so you don’t end up wasting your money on bras you don’t need or dislike later.

Here’s how to smartly buy bras in the new year:

1.  Toss bras before going bra shopping.

Toss old bras before hitting the lingerie stores. You’ll want to rid your lingerie drawer of bras that don’t fit, bras that are showing wear and tear and bras that you haven’t worn a bra in six months or longer. If you haven’t worn a bra in six months, you likely won’t wear it again. However, if want to save a good bra – perhaps for pregnancy or nursing – do so. Just remove it from your lingerie drawer so the drawer only contains bras you want to wear now. You can also donate bras that are in good condition.

2.  Take inventory of your lingerie drawer before shopping.

Take inventory of your lingerie drawer after you’ve purged old bras. Did you toss your strapless bra because it lost its shape? Did you let go of your best push-up because it no longer fit? Do you have any t-shirt bras at all? Make a mental list (or real one!) of what bras you need to add to your collection.

3.  Get a professional bra fitting

It’s essential to get a professional bra fitting before trying on bras. Did your bra size change in the last year? Has it been a while since your last bra fitting? Have you never had one? Make sure you’re fitted for a bra, so you buy the right size and don’t waste money.

4.  Take your time.

Make sure you have about three hours for your bra shopping trip. You’ll need plenty of time for bra fitting, browsing and trying on various bras. You can also schedule your bra fitting in advance to ensure an associate can help you promptly. If you do schedule the appointment, still budget a few hours for your trip.

5.  Shop around.

It’s a good idea to shop around after your bra fitting. Try on bras from various lingerie stores. You can even get a second bra fitting. Don’t feel pressured to buy from the first lingerie store you visit.

6.  Smartly buy bras you can wear during all seasons.

It’s not every day you go bra shopping. So, think ahead to ensure you smartly buy bras that you can wear for a variety of seasons. Perhaps you make sure to pick up a strapless bra for your spring vacation. Just remember that your bra size could change over the next few months. It may be best to buy a select few bras now, then shop again later after having another bra fitting.

7.  Buy bras you know you’ll love wearing.

Think back to the bras you purged before bra shopping. Were there any styles you tossed because they didn’t suit you? With so many beautiful bras on the market, it’s easy to get distracted. Make sure you only buy bras you know you’ll love to wear.

8.  Shop smart.

Quality bras are more expensive. But, they will better maintain their shape over time and last longer. If you buy cheap bras, you risk needing to buy new ones soon due to wear and tear.

Bra shopping can be overwhelming, so it’s good to start with a plan. That way, you make intentional purposes that you’ll be happy with when you get home. Happy bra shopping in the new year!

One of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Will my bra size change if I lose weight?”

There are several things that can change your bra size – one of them being fluctuations in your weight. If you lose weight, it’s possible you’ll experience a bra size change. But this isn’t always the case. It’s possible your bra size will remain the same after losing weight. Let’s consider the factors that may cause a change in bra sizes.

Factors that can cause your bra size to change with weight loss

Every woman is different. For some women, losing six pounds will put them in a different bra size. For others, weighing six pounds less won’t change a thing about their current bra size.

Here are the factors that can affect a change in bra sizes with weight loss:

1.  How much weight you lose.

Your boobs contain fat cells. Shedding pounds can decrease the fat cells in your boobs. This causes your bustline to decrease. However, you typically lose fat all over your body when you lose weight. It’s hard to tell when your boobs will be affected. Of course, it also depends on how much fat you lose.

2.  Your genes.

No two women’s breasts are the same, thanks to genetics. Your genes determine your boobs’ shape and size. Your genes affect hormone levels, which affect the density of your breast tissue. Women with less fatty breast tissue may experience less change in their bra size from losing weight. On the other hand, women with more fat tissue in their breasts may notice more changes. Whether or not your breasts shrink after losing weight depends not only on how much fat you lose, but how much fatty tissue your breasts originally contained.

3.  Your age.

Many changes take place in the breast as a woman ages. The ligaments in older breasts can become weak, making the breasts sag. And women that are past menopause may have more fat in in their breast tissue. This means that older women may quickly a notice a bra size change from losing weight.

Remember:

A change in bra sizes from weight loss won’t always mean a decrease in cup size. You could lose weight, but actually gain a cup size. It all comes down to how your body loses fat, and how the weight loss affects the shape of your breasts. But don’t let a potential change in bra sizes deter you from losing weight. Weight loss comes with excess benefits. And though buying new bras can be expensive, you can stay within budget. Plus, it’s always fun giving your lingerie drawer an upgrade – even if it’s a gradual, economical upgrade.

If you’re planning on losing weight, go ahead and budget for needing to buy new bras. But, don’t buy bras in anticipation of your bra size changing. It may not change at all after shedding few pounds. Either way, it’s best to get a professional bra fitting after losing weight to determine if you need a different bra size.
