As 2017 comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to look back and reflect on the year. 2017 was a big year for MOD By Parfait – it marked the debut of the line, with lingerie and swimwear available at select retailers starting in Spring 2018, and the launch of the MOD By Parfait blog.

While we’ve enjoyed bringing you articles on bra fitting, lingerie, body positivity, self love, health, wellness, and style, we can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store.

Here are some of our favorite MOD By Parfait blog posts from 2017:

1.  7 Signs You Are Wearing The Wrong Bra Size

wearing the wrong bra size

You’ve probably heard that 80-90% of women are wearing the wrong bra size.

Here’s why this is often true: it’s normal for your bra size to change. In fact, your bra size can change if you lose weight, gain weight, become pregnant, have a baby, start breast feeding, stop breastfeeding, go through menopause, or if you have surgery (breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastectomy, reconstructive breast surgery), etc.

Most women wear multiple bra sizes throughout their lives as their boobs change as a result of any of the experiences above.

Unsure if you’re wearing the right bra size? We share what to look for.

2.  Bra Fitting Etiquette: The Dos and Dont’s You Should Know

bra fitting etiquette

You’ve booked the bra fitting appointment (or at least set aside some time in your busy schedule to visit a lingerie store). Now you’re wondering what to expect. As you’re preparing for your fitting, these questions start popping up: What is a bra fitting like? How long does a bra fitting take? Can I keep my clothes on?

If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place. We answer these questions (and more) in this helpful guide.

3.  How To Help A Friend Who Is Struggling With Self Love

help friend struggling with self love

We all have friends who are super confident – and ones who are super self-conscious. As much as we tell our friends how amazing and gorgeous and fabulous they are, sometimes they just don’t believe us because they don’t believe that they are the embodiment of all of those wonderful things themselves.

You might already know that your relationship with yourself is arguably the most important relationship of your life. And, as they say, self love is a lifelong journey. Here’s how to be there for a friend who is struggling with self love.

4.  Here’s Why You Should Never Put Your Bras In The Dryer

don't put bras in the dryer

Are you guilty of throwing your bras in the dryer? We all know someone who still does (and maybe that person is you!) It’s no surprise that bras aren’t cheap – a quality bra can cost anywhere from $40-$60+ – and it’s important to have at least 3 bras in your lingerie wardrobe. So, if you’re looking for a way to keep your bras looking and feeling new for as long as possible, this article is for you.

5.  8 Ways To Show Your Body More Love

love your body

Our bodies do so much for us. When was the last time you worked out, enjoyed some “me time”, or at the very least, thanked your body for being there for you every single day without fail? If your answer is ‘today’ or ‘this week’, congrats! You likely have a healthy relationship with your body. If not, here are eight things you can do to show your body more love.

6.  Shopping For New Bras? Don’t Make This Common Mistake

shopping for new bras

When it comes to bras, one of the worst mistakes you can make is buying a bra that doesn’t fit. Aside from being uncomfortable and even sometimes painful, an ill-fitting bra will absolutely change the fit of every single outfit that you wear it with. So, if you want your clothes to fit better, your posture to improve, and your back and boobs to finally feel supported and comfortable, go for a bra in the right size for you.

Here’s how a bra fitting can help you do just that.

7.  Bra Fitting 101: Band Sizes, Cup Sizes, and Sister Sizing

bra fitting sizing

You’re not alone if you think bra sizing is confusing. Just when you’ve figured out your bra size, someone throws ‘sister sizing’ or ‘international size conversions’ into the mix.

Don’t worry, we’re here to help. We’re demystifying the wacky world of bra sizing and size conversions and answering some of your most commonly asked questions along the way, like: How do I calculate my band size? How should the cups fit? Which hook should I start my bra on?

Know the answers to these questions? Great! If not, this article will definitely help you out.

8.  How To Feel Confident In A Swimsuit

how to feel confident in a swimsuit

Everyone should be able to rock a swimsuit without judgement. After all, all bodies are bikini bodies. But many of us aren’t quite there yet. If you’re struggling with feeling confident at the beach or pool, try these six things for an immediate boost.

Thank you to everyone who has read, shared, commented, followed, and purchased from our brand! We hope you have an amazing 2018. Happy New Year!

Have you ever struggled with finding bras that fit and didn’t know where to turn? Welcome to our Best Lingerie Stores series, where we’re chatting with the best local lingerie stores and sharing their bra fitting expertise with you. These lingerie stores have helped hundreds of thousands of women find their favorite bras — and they want to help you look and feel your best too. This week, we chatted with Celine Segal (aka The Bra Doctor®) of Now That’s Lingerie, an online lingerie store based in Montreal, Canada.

All About Now That’s Lingerie:

Parfait Team: What inspired you to start a business?

Celine Segal: I love helping people and I’ve always been interested in fashion. With my husband Jacob’s support, we decided to open a business that would unite all my passions and make a unique impact on the lingerie industry.

PT: What about the lingerie industry interested you?

Celine: We started out with a boutique selling women’s clothing about 30 years ago.  When we introduced lingerie to the store, we noticed our customers’ demand for beautifully-fitting, quality bras increased. It fascinated me how many women were wearing bras that didn’t fit them properly. I would help them personally find their perfect fit, and started bringing specialty bra sizes into the store which were not available in department stores at that time. I became known as a bra fitting expert and it was incredibly gratifying to help women finally feel confident and comfortable in their bras, then come back to see me with their friends and family to get them fitted too.

PT: Tell us about your store name. What inspired the name Now That’s Lingerie?

Celine: One of our longtime customers always said she loved coming to see me to get fitted for bras. After she brought in a few friends to have me help fit them, we heard one of them happily say “Now THAT’s lingerie!” That exclamation really resonated with us when we first decided to launch our website.

PT: Your business transitioned from a brick and mortar store in Montreal, Canada to an online store over seventeen years ago. What inspired the transition?

Celine: We were doing very well helping customers with their various bra fitting problems, and we really wanted to offer our unique services and quality lingerie to an even wider audience. My husband and I decided to modernize and bring our specific knowledge of the lingerie industry online. We were one of the first e-commerce websites in Canada at that time.

PT: What do you enjoy most about owning a lingerie boutique?

Celine: I would say the freedom and independence we have on our everyday decisions.  There is always something new happening in the lingerie industry and it is quite exciting, and we’re flexible and able to quickly adapt and jump on the latest trends and innovations to bring them to our customers first.

Bra Fitting at Now That’s Lingerie:

PT: Why is it important for women to get a professional bra fitting?

Celine: Bra fitting is like a science. Most women assume they know what bra size they are, without considering that not all sizes fit the same way. For example, two 36C bras can fit differently depending on factors like the brand, fabric, materials, style, and shape, to name a few. Women’s breast size, shape and elasticity can also change over time due to hormones, weight fluctuations, stress, pregnancy, and so their bras need to change to evolve with their new shape. It really takes a professional who understands that different women have different lingerie needs but the same goals – to feel comfortable and confident in their lingerie. And they need someone with expertise to help them navigate the thousands of different bras to find their own unique perfect fit.

PT: What do you wish all women knew about lingerie and bra fitting?

Celine: I wish women knew that it can be the norm to feel comfortable in their bras, regardless of their bra size! There is so much lingerie available these days, in quite an array of sizing. I can’t emphasize enough that finding the perfect fit is key.

PT: Women and men around the world trust your bra fitting advice. What can you tell our readers about how you became the in-house Bra Doctor®?

Celine: Fun fact: it was a customer who first nicknamed me “The Bra Doctor®”! It’s been a pleasure helping people find their perfect bra size over the years, and so interesting to get so many emails and questions every day from customers in different countries. One thing’s for sure, no matter where they are, people want to feel comfortable and sexy in their lingerie. It’s very fulfilling for me to have someone contact me after they received their new bras and tell me how incredible they feel, how much better their clothing fits on top of their lingerie, and how I’ve helped them change their lives. It’s incredible what a big difference a great bra can make!

PT: You’re committed to offering a diverse range of styles and sizes for your customers. What do you look for when selecting new styles?

Celine: A comfortable fit, a cup that gives a fashionably round shape, a wider side band for a smoother fit, adjustable straps for extra customization, preferably with bra cups that offer a bit of stretch to accommodate regular breast fluctuations and bounce-back from wash and wear, and a wide range of available sizing, with an affordable price tag.

PT: We love that you carry bras under $50. What are some of your favorite budget-friendly bras?

Celine: Some of my favorite bras are those that have an incredible fit. That currently includes Triumph’s 63561 minimizer bra, which compresses the breasts and for a smaller, smoother look under clothes, and is perfect for fuller busts.  Naturana’s 5586 molded soft cup bra is a hit with our customers, because it’s made with organic cotton and the perfect amount of stretch.  Another favorite that fits well is Elita’s 6100 crossover cotton mini-camisole, which is also wire-free and ideal for women with smaller breasts.

PT: What are your current best-selling bras?

Celine: Right now, our customers are loving the Matilda, Penelope, Lynn, Casey and Jeanie bras by Parfait. The Allure, Prodigy and Absolute collections from Montelle Intimates have also been quite popular recently.

PT: How many bras does a woman actually need in her lingerie wardrobe?

Celine: That’s like asking a woman how many shoes she really needs! The short answer is 5 bras: an everyday seamless bra to wear underneath anything, a demi bra for lower cut tops, a push-up bra to enhance cleavage, a supportive sports bra for exercise, and at least one sexy bra for special and romantic occasions.

PT: Some of us are shy about buying colored bras. What advice would you give to a woman who loves color, but isn’t sure how to incorporate it into her wardrobe?

Celine: It’s incredible how much difference a bit of color can make in the way you feel when you put on your clothes! If you’re wearing lighter colors, you can get away with pale pastels (like light blush pink for example) which usually won’t show under lighter tops. Under dark colors, anything goes, including deep reds, purple, blue, green, you name it! We all need basic bras in black, white, or nude, but don’t be shy to add some color to change it up and keep your lingerie wardrobe looking and feeling fresh.

To find a lingerie specialty store near you, visit our store locator here.

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for malls, department stores, and local businesses. It’s also a time when we see more men than ever shopping at lingerie stores.

If you’ve visited a lingerie store recently, you’ve probably seen a guy waiting for his girlfriend outside the fitting room or browsing the bra and panty racks with a sales associate by his side. It’s not uncommon to see men in lingerie stores, especially during the holidays.

As someone who has been on both sides of the register (as a sales associate at a lingerie store and a customer), it’s not a big deal at all. So if you’re a guy reading this, believe me when I say that women don’t find you creepy or weird for shopping at a lingerie store solo.

While I can understand why a guy would be anxious about stepping into a lingerie store, here’s what women are really thinking:

1.  “He’s probably buying a gift.”

2.  “He might be shopping for himself.”

3.  “There’s a man shopping in here? I didn’t even notice.”

4.  “OH NO THERE’S A MAN IN THE STORE! ONLY WOMEN ARE ALLOWED TO SHOP HERE” <— There’s always one person.

It turns out shopping for lingerie isn’t as scary as it seems. Most of the women in the store (with the exception of the sales clerks) are focused on shopping for themselves. They’re more concerned about finding bras that fit, locating the matching panty for the bra they just found, and enjoying some well-deserved “me time.”

Unless you’re staring at them or asking them what size they are because your girlfriend is about the same size (just don’t) or holding the last bra in their size or the last panty in the store (you’ve been warned), they probably won’t even notice you’re there.

While it can be nerve-wrecking to shop solo, here are a few tips to make the experience easier for you:

1.  First, check if your significant other is open to receiving lingerie as a gift. Some women prefer to shop for themselves.

2.  Write down your S.O.’s bra and panty sizes before you go (if you’re shopping for a gift). Since sizing can vary wildly from brand to brand, it’s best to check three of their bras and three of their panties at home and write down the sizes for each.

Remember: Not all cup sizes fit the same. A 32D fits different from a 34D and a 36D, for example. Also be sure to note their favorite styles and brands if you notice a reoccurring theme (like a love of lace, perhaps).

3.  Be confident (or fake it if you’re uncomfortable or nervous). There’s no reason why you don’t belong there too.

4.  Don’t be afraid to ask the sales associates for help. That’s what they’re there for. They can also save you a lot of time.

5.  Avoid being chatty. Lingerie stores are intimate places – it’s always best to respect the privacy of the men and women around you and only strike up a conversation if they seem open to it.

6.  If you’re shopping for yourself and need a bra fitting or bra recommendations, don’t be afraid to ask. The bra fitters at lingerie stores are trained to fit everyone.

7.  Note the return policy (just in case).

8.  Always ask for a gift receipt. Some stores also offer gift wrapping if you need it.

9.  Bring this helpful guide with you if you’re shopping for a gift for your girlfriend. And this guide if you’re shopping for yourself.

10.  If you see things you think she’d like, but you’re still unsure of her size or style preferences, buy her a giftcard and plan a return visit to the store together.

That’s it!

Have a question for us about lingerie shopping or buying lingerie as a gift? Let us know in the comments below.

As a bra fitter, I help women find bras that fit, feel comfortable, and help them feel confident and supported. If you’ve never had a bra fitting or you’ve never heard of it before, a bra fitting is when a bra fit specialist (yes, it’s a real job) takes your measurements, listens to your needs and concerns, and selects the best bras for your bra size, breast shape, and style preference.

For many women, it’s the only time they have to themselves all day, so bra fitters take this time very seriously. Depending on the store, you might be offered champagne, a cozy fitting room befitting a boudoir to try bras on, and a personal shopper to handpick the bras for you. No matter where you go, bra fittings are all about being pampered.

Though an average bra fitting takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, I’ve had customers who have spent hours happily shopping and indulging themselves in a little much-deserved retail therapy.

A common thread

Over the years, I’ve helped women shop for lingerie for their honeymoon, buy bras for the first time in years, and buy bras for the first time in their life. I’ve helped men shop for their girlfriends, spouses, and significant others, and I’ve processed more returns for used lingerie than anyone should ever have to.

Though the hugs, tears, and fears, almost all of the women I’ve helped have had one thing in common: once we were in the fitting room, they almost immediately pointed out something negative about their bodies. And every single time it broke my heart.

“I gained so much weight while I was pregnant. I’m so sorry.” – one new mother told me.

“You won’t laugh if I take my shirt off, right?” – one woman asked, with equal parts humor and seriousness.

“My boobs looked so different before three kids,” another woman confessed. “I hate how they look now.”

“My husband sent me here for new bras. He complains about how saggy my boobs are,” a woman said, looking defeated.

“I have stretch marks all over my body, I’m sorry you have to see them,” another woman sighed, dejectedly.

Enough is enough

As women, we’re often the first person to apologize for our weight, our stretch marks, our beautiful make-up free faces. We bring it up even when it isn’t part of the conversation. It’s like we’re afraid the other person is going to say something about it, so we have to beat them to it.

But when you think about it, why wouldn’t we?

Society constantly tells us that there’s something wrong with our bodies – we’re not curvy enough, thin enough, tan enough, tall enough, small enough. Our skin isn’t smooth enough, clear enough, or young enough. We’re never enough. And it’s exhausting. Even the most confident women struggle with filtering out negative self-talk sometimes.

A judgment-free zone

When you walk into a lingerie boutique, you’re walking into a judgement-free zone. Bra fitters will never ever judge your body. We are there to help you find new bras, celebrate your promotion with a little shopping, and help you feel good about yourself. Regardless of your age, the color of your skin, your gender identity, or your sexual orientation, we have absolutely no tolerance for body shaming or negativity – and neither should you. You deserve better! We know the road to self-love is a hard one, but we’ll help you get there – one bra, babydoll, or genuine compliment at a time.

So the next time you’re in a fitting room, get comfortable, enjoy the glass of champagne, and indulge yourself in some well-deserved “me-time” – no negative self-talk allowed.

Do you know someone who is feeling anxious about visiting a lingerie store? Please feel free to share this with them!

Whether you are saving for your next big trip or trying to pay off student loans faster, being on a budget can really put a damper on your social life. When everyone in your life is inviting you to eat out, see a concert, or go to a bar, it can be frustrating to constantly have to decline invitations when you don’t have any extra money to spend. And dating on a budget can be even more of a bummer. However, great dates (or going out with friends, or your spouse) don’t have to cost much — or anything — to spark romance and inspire conversation.

When you’re on a budget, but looking to go on a date (or out with friends), look to these fifteen activities for ideas.

1.  Head to a park

One awesome — and free — constant in life is that parks can be found even in the smallest of towns and largest of cities. Simply strolling through a park hand in hand can be a wonderful way to get to know someone.

2.  Go for a run

If you and your love interest are active, maybe planning a pre- or post-work run is a good option. During a date run, you’ll release some endorphins while staying fit.

3.  Try a bike ride

Biking is a fun and low-impact way to stay fit. Couple this with a date, and you have the makings of a fun Saturday afternoon exploring your hometown.

4.  Check the schedule at your local library

Libraries are a hotspot for interesting, free activities. They often host local speakers, book clubs, exhibits, and cooking classes on a variety of different subjects. For a free date, check out the schedule for the library near you and you might just be surprised with the options you find.

5.  Parades and festivals

Each season holds a plethora of holidays and harvests that are bound to have parades, events, and festivals tied to them. By reading your local newspaper, you can learn about these free, fun events and suggest one for your next date.

6.  Free concerts

The summer is a great time to check out free local talent playing at beaches, bars, festivals, or parks. If you and your date love music, seeing a free concert is an excellent way to save some money while potentially finding your new favorite performer.

7.  Stroll through a botanical garden

Walking hand in hand through a rock garden or among blooming roses certainly makes for a romantic date. Many botanical gardens across the country have free entry or low cost tickets.

8.  Sightseeing

For your next date, play tourist in your town by visiting all the sights that you might show an out-of-towner.

9.  Cook at home

Cooking together is a fun, hands-on way to get to know your date, and it only costs the price of ingredients. Open up your favorite cookbook, turn on some music, and get ready for a great night in.

10.  Coffee date

With a full-time job and a side hustle, you and your love interest might not have a whole lot of time or money for a date. In that case, how about opting for a coffee date at a unique café. Coffee or tea are often under $2, making for an affordable way to catch up.

11.  Go for a picnic

You know that park I mentioned as point number one? Combine a visit to a park (or bike ride) with a picnic lunch or dinner with a bottle of wine, cheese, and fruit, and you’ve got yourself a budget-friendly romantic outing.

12.  Movie night

Skip the theater in favor of a movie night in. Snuggle into the couch and pop in your favorite DVD or queue up Netflix and I’d say that is a great way to spend a cozy fall or winter evening.

13.  Enjoy a free band at a bar

For the affordable price of a beer, you and your date could enjoy live music played by a local band in your favorite neighborhood bar. Many smaller bars often don’t charge a cover, especially if you arrive before a certain hour, so this cheap date option won’t be lacking on fun.

14.  Go for a swim

Another active outdoor date that is perfect in warmer weather is spending a day at the beach. Relaxing on the sand, playing sports, and swimming compose one of my favorite summertime dates.

15.  Play a board game

Though it might sound a bit old school, board games are actually a fun way to get to know someone. You can learn about strengths and weaknesses as well as strategy while laughing together as you figure out the rules.

Women are savers. According to experts with Fidelity Investments, women save about 8% of their income compared to men, who save about 7%, on average. But, while we save more on a percentage basis, the gender pay gap means, in some cases, we are saving less than our male counterparts.

Here’s how to make the most of the money you’re saving – and investing.

1.  Save (or invest) for specific things

My husband invests more of his paycheck in long-term goals. I’m good with that, because I like to see my money working for us quicker. So, my investments and savings choices are geared more toward our next vacation or buying a new house (don’t worry, I’m also saving for retirement, but I save for that in slower-growing funds).

My favorite savings-specific plan is the $1/week plan: I number each week of the year (1-52), and for each week, I put that much money in a savings account. So, for the first week of the year, I put in $1 and for the 52nd week of the year, I put in $52 – at the end of every year, I’ve saved about $3,000. That savings account is used for vacations, home improvement project, and fun money.

2.  Start investing even if you’re not in a long-term relationship

Many women wait to invest until they are ‘settled’ – married, with kids, and a mortgage. The thing is, by waiting until marriage, kids, and mortgage you may waste 5 or even 10 years of investment potential. That is thousands of dollars that aren’t working for your future.

Another problem: kids and mortgages are expensive, and if you’re not already saving and investing, it will be harder to find the money to start once you’re already paying for piano lessons and that pool in the backyard.

3.  Take advantage of the investment plan at your work

Look at the kind of matching program offered by your workplace. Some will match dollar for dollar, some with match up to a certain percentage. Understand what they will match, and go for the max amount – that is free money in your retirement pocket.

Also, if your workplace offers investment seminars or one-on-one appointments, take advantage of those so that you understand all of your investment options.

4.  Take the lessons you teach to your children (or nieces and nephews) about saving to heart

No child wants to put all their money in a piggy bank, but if you start a child saving even a quarter of an allowance, and allowing them to keep – and spend – the other 75%, they can see how quickly a couple of quarters becomes a significant amount of cash – and so can you.

Another thing to remember: we aren’t just investing for ourselves, but for our children. Our kids look at how we interact with money, and that helps to solidify how they look at money and investing. So, let’s make investing not only work for us, but create a better relationship between our kids and their money.

Chances are you’re wearing the wrong bra size right now. Yes, you. How do I know? Studies show that 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. While that exact number is debatable, most women have at least one bra in their wardrobe that is uncomfortable, worn out, ill-fitting, or unsupportive. Sound familiar? Maybe you received the bra as a gift and can’t bear to part with it. Maybe you haven’t had a chance to clean out your closet yet. Or maybe you’re just not sure what to do with your old bras (we have a few ideas).

As a bra fitter, it’s my mission to help you find bras that fit well and feel good. Since I need a little help from my friends to make this possible, I’m personally referring you to a lingerie store to get a professional bra fitting. The wonderful bra fitters at these stores can help you finally find bras that fit in addition to saving you time and money. Plus, by shopping at one of these stores, you’re supporting (pun intended) a small business in the process and directly benefiting your local community.

Don’t have a lingerie store near you? Here’s how to check the fit at home in four easy steps.

Before you buy another bra, ask yourself these questions first:

1.  Have I had a bra fitting in the last 6 months?

bra fitting

Parfait Ellie Unlined Wire Bra P5082 in Pewter/Nude | Parfait Ellie Hipster P5085 in Pewter/Nude

If you answered no, or if you’ve never had a bra fitting, it’s time.

Other signs: you’ve recently lost or gained weight, you’ve become pregnant or had a baby, your bras are uncomfortable and don’t fit properly, your breast tissue doesn’t feel supported when you’re wearing a bra, you’re experiencing back pain, or you’re just not happy with any of your bras.

2.  Do I know my bra size?

bra sizes

If your answer is no and you’re filling up your shopping cart with multiple sizes in the hopes that one or two bras will fit, you need a bra fitting. A bra fitter can take the guesswork out of bra shopping and show you exactly what you need.

3.  Do I know which styles work best for me?

bra styles

Parfait Elissa Strapless Contour Underwire Bra P5011 in Black | Parfait Elissa Bikini P5013 in Black | Parfait Darlene Unlined Wire Bra P5172 in Summer Blue

If you answered no, it’s time for a bra fitting. Believe it or not, every woman has a few bra styles that work better for her than others. Bra fitters can match the right bra with your breast shape and size and body type.

4.  Do I know how to properly care for my lingerie?

how to care for lingerie

Parfait Matilda Contour Plunge Padded Bra P5311 in Bisque | Parfait Charlotte Bikini 6905 in Bronze | Parfait Sandrine Plunge Longline Bra P5351 in Cameo Rose

If you answered no, you’re probably in need of new bras. Consider this: Are you too hard on your bras? Do you wear the same bra every day? Do you wash them in hot water or throw them in the dryer? Maybe the reason why you’re replacing your bras so often is because of how you’re washing and storing them. Your bras will last a lot longer than 1-3 months if you’re rotating them (never wear the same bra too days in a row), washing them with care, and storing them properly in a closet or in drawers.

These are just a few things to consider before buying new bras. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on bras in order for them to last. As long as you buy the right size, start with a few (minimum 3-4 bras), and take good care of them, they should last you approx. 6-12 months.

What’s your favorite local lingerie store?

Have you ever struggled with finding bras that fit and didn’t know where to turn? Welcome to our Best Lingerie Stores series, where we’re chatting with the best local lingerie stores and sharing their bra fitting expertise with you. These lingerie stores have helped hundreds of thousands of women find their favorite bras — and they want to help you look and feel your best too. This week, we chatted with Lauren Palmer of Curvaceous Lingerie in Lansing, Michigan.

All About Curvaceous Lingerie:

Parfait Team: What inspired you to start a business?

Lauren: Retail is in my blood! My father was a successful retailer, so I grew up seeing everything he did. My first job was as a bridal consultant when I was 16, and it turned out I was pretty good at it! From there I knew I wanted to own some sort of shop. At first it was a ladies dress store, then it morphed over time into other random ideas. Life changed, I moved around a lot then finally settled back where I started. A friend came up with the lingerie store idea, and it clicked.

PT: What about the lingerie industry interested you?

Lauren: I’ve always loved lingerie! I love the way it makes me feel – confident, uplifted, and sexy.  And as time went on with my retail career in bridal and women’s formalwear the foundations really played a huge part in completing the entire ensemble. I learned to respect the foundational element, but never really thought about following the lingerie path until much later. It was an easy segue way.

PT: Your store is located in Lansing, Michigan. How did you decide on the location?

Lauren: I grew up just outside of Lansing in a town called Okemos. We initially opened in Okemos as a mini-boutique inside a bridal salon. This worked out really well! I managed the salon and ran my own section, and in turn got to experiment with different brands without all of the immediate overhead. Once separate space opened up in an area called Old Town Lansing, I jumped on it though. Old Town is truly a unique neighborhood – full of food and the arts! We host a lot of festivals like ArtFeast and Oktoberfest, and there’s always something going on. When the business idea was born, I knew immediately Old Town was the place!

PT: Tell us about your store name. What inspired the name Curvaceous Lingerie?

Lauren: The name Curvaceous literally was pulled off of a lingerie blog in about five minutes.  I knew I wanted an adjective as the name of the shop, so I wrote about five down and just picked one! It’s been a bit of a love/hate thing though – a lot of folks only thought we sold plus sizes in the beginning, then there were many that didn’t believe we sold plus at all! Finally I implemented the tagline “From Small to Plus” and that seems to have done the trick! Ultimately I believe the name will be an advantage, especially when we launch our e-commerce site (forecasted Q1 2018).

PT: What do you enjoy most about your local community?

Lauren: Curvaceous has amazing neighbors, and our customers are truly the heartbeat that keeps everything going. Our business and residential neighbors all support one another! We communicate and collaborate on events, projects, and even advertising. It is truly a blessing to be a part of a system like the one we’ve established in Old Town! Plus you can’t beat our Old Town Commercial Association, which does a great job hustling for all the businesses in the area.

Our customers are our inspiration.  We serve all people within our store, and have a very all-inclusive mentality. The type of people just this alone attracts by word of mouth are so incredibly supportive of us and our messaging.  It feels good to help someone with a bra fitting that has never had help before!

Bra Fitting at Curvaceous Lingerie:

PT: Why is it important for women to get a professional bra fitting?

Lauren: My number one response is always this: So they don’t go their entire lives thinking bras are uncomfortable and not made for them. I’ve had sixty year olds cry in our dressing rooms after we’ve fit them and they are comfortable for the first time EVER.  Finding a bra on your own can be tough! But, we wear them every single day! It touches our skin, it distracts us if not in place properly. Why would you not do a fitting?

Bras can affect your health as well. Nobody likes a wire that pokes and digs beneath the arm. Sometimes in extreme cases this can cause lymph damage, scarring, and cysts.  Sounds horrible, right? So take care of the problem and make sure you’re wearing something designed for your body structure, not the general public’s.

PT: What do you wish all women knew about lingerie and professional bra fitting?

Lauren: I really wish more women knew that their bands are supposed to start out firm (as they are support garments!) and that seams can be perfectly appropriate to wear. For some reason in the US we have a cultural mentality against seams showing on a woman’s bra. Is it truly the end of the world if someone knows you have a bra on? Many times these are the only types of bras that work on a woman, so her being open to them makes the fit process much better for everyone.

PT: You’re committed to offering a diverse range of styles and sizes for your customers. What do you look for when selecting new styles?

Lauren: Demand is ever-changing regarding our bra category. When looking for new styles we take customer feedback and requests very seriously, as they can be used as a guideline to purchase new goods. We always have our core basics in stock, but randomly or seasonally we notice a lack of a specific shape or maybe fabric that could be useful to throw into the mix.  Based on what we know we need, we give current brands the opportunity to fill the gap first (keeps things more simple). If they cannot fulfill what’s desired we look to outside brands that live up to our quality standards and normal price ranges. Sometimes samples are requested to ensure we’re making the best purchase for our customers we can.

PT: What is the largest bra size you carry?

Lauren: Currently the largest size we have in stock is 48HH UK, or 48L US.

PT: We love that you carry bras under $50. What are some of your favorite budget-friendly bras?

Lauren: Two of our absolute favorites are the Carole Wire Bra by Parfait ($49) and the Jeanie Plunge Bra ($40).

PT: What are your current best-selling bras?

Lauren: The Parfait Carole has been our long-standing best seller, and we’re excited for it to arrive back in stock for January 2018. Additional bras that do extremely well for us are basically anything made of a spacer material. The stretch of the fabrication combined with a smooth T-shirt like front is the perfect combination for women who are full or shallow on top, or slightly uneven.

PT: How many bras does a woman actually need in her lingerie wardrobe?

Lauren: Minimum three! One to wear, one to rest, one to wash. The more you rotate, the longer they last!

PT: Some of us are shy about buying colored bras. What advice would you give to a woman who loves color, but isn’t sure how to incorporate it into her wardrobe?

Lauren: If you’re on the fence about color, the easiest way to incorporate it into your wardrobe is look for solids in slightly off-basic colors. Popular choices tend to be navy, grey, or a pink tone. Sometimes navy just feels a bit more fresh than black, right? After getting used to these colors you’ll begin to realize that if you treat navy or grey like you’d wear a black bra (under dark clothing!) you can basically get away with anything.

PT: What can you tell our readers about the bra fitting experience at Curvaceous Lingerie?

Lauren: Bra fittings on average take about 20 minutes or so. We love to keep things efficient for our customers! We always start with a ribcage measurement then eyeball the cup size. Everything is done from the back, so there is never any awkwardness or feelings of discomfort for the customer. Part of the process we love is educating people about why exactly what they’re wearing does or does not fit correctly. Knowledge is power!

PT: Do we need an appointment for a bra fitting?

Lauren: No, you do not need an appointment at Curvaceous for a fitting unless we are having a special event and it is specifically requested. Come on in anytime and we are happy to help!

Did you know that 80% of a bra’s support comes from the band? In fact, a bra’s straps only account for about 20% of the overall support. Yet, most women rely on the cups and straps for support (!!!) and are disappointed when their bras don’t fit.

So, how do you end the cycle of disappointment? By getting a bra fitting from a lingerie boutique. Professional bra fitters are trained to help women find bras that fit well and feel good. Most importantly, they know what it’s like to struggle with finding good bras. They’re been there and done that. Their job is to take the stress out of bra fitting by educating you on how to put on a bra the right way and showing you what a proper fitting bra looks like.

Don’t have a lingerie store in your area? Then this guide is for you. Since you’re checking the fit of the bra at home, we’re starting with how to put on a bra and including helpful tips on how to check the fit at home.

Ready to begin? Here’s how to tell if a bra fits in four easy steps.

1.  Slide your arms into the straps of the bra and hook the band on the loosest hook.

how a bra should fit

Another option is to hook the bra in the front first, then turn it around to the back, pull it up your ribcage, and slide your arms into the straps. Once the bra is up and in place, check the fit of the band. For a properly fitting band, you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between your skin and the band.

Before you move onto the next step, make sure the bra band is parallel to the floor. You don’t want a band that rides up in back because it’s too loose or leaves bruises or marks on your skin because it’s too tight. When you’re wearing the right size, your bra band should be parallel to the floor and feel snug and supportive.

2.  Next, scoop all of your breast issue into the cups.

how is a bra supposed to fit

As you’re scooping your breast tissue, focus on moving it away from the side underwire and toward the center of the cup (also known as the scoop and swoop).

For the best fit, all of your breast tissue should be completely contained within the cups. No breast tissue should be outside of the underwire on the sides or spilling over the tops of the cups (no “double boob”). You also shouldn’t experience any side spillage or “back fat” (which is often an indication that you need a larger cup size) in a proper fitting bra.

3.  Then, check the fit of the straps.

 how to fit a bra

You should be able to fit two fingers between your skin and the strap. Adjust if needed.

4.  Finally, take a look in the mirror and examine how the bra fits and feels overall.

bra fitting guide

Ask yourself these questions:

  • -Is my breast tissue spilling on the sides of the bra or at the top of the cups?
  • -Is there room in the cups? Are the cups gaping?
  • -Does the center front of the bra (also known as the center gore) lie flat against my chest or does it stick out?
  • -Is the band riding up in the back?
  • -Does the band feel loose or too tight?
  • -Are the straps falling off my back (too loose or the wrong style) or leaving marks on my skin (too tight)?
  • -Is this bra uncomfortable? Do I want to take it off immediately after putting it on?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, try a different bra size. Alternately, if the bra fits but it just doesn’t feel right, it could simply be the style that isn’t working for you.

Recap

So, how should a bra fit? The band should be parallel to the ground and worn on the loosest hook when you first buy it. Most importantly, it should fit snug, but not uncomfortable. The straps should stay in place on your shoulders and allow enough room for you to fit two fingers between your shoulder and the strap. The cups should contain all of your breast tissue without any spillage, gaping, or empty space.

Ultimately, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort or pain while wearing the bra. And you shouldn’t experience any marks, bruises, discoloration, or soreness after taking the bra off.

This week, we chatted with Erica Windle of A Sophisticated Pair in Burlington, North Carolina.

All About A Sophisticated Pair:

Parfait Team: What inspired you to start a business? What about the lingerie industry interested you?

Erica: When I was sixteen, my boobs went from manageable with 34C hand-me downs to exploding out of brand new 38DDs. My poor parents had no idea what to do, so they took me to Victoria’s Secret for help. The lady barely let us past the entrance before curtly deciding nothing would fit me and that I’d be better suited going to Lane Bryant. My fragile self-esteem was demolished, and I struggled against tears. At Lane Bryant, nothing fit properly, and my exasperated parents pleaded with the associate, “Well, there HAS to be somewhere we can find her a bra?” Outside of department stores, which we already tried, the only place left was Frederick’s of Hollywood (yes, the store with pink fur handcuffs, sheer chemises, and riding crops). Lacking any other alternative, my parents and I ventured into what was decidedly an adult-oriented store. It was every bit as awkward as you can imagine, and to this day, I am not sure who was more embarrassed. The silver lining was we found something workable, and I wore the same style religiously until I was twenty-one. For years, I despised bras with a fiery passion. In fact, if you told me at sixteen I would one day own a bra store, I would have told you to get your head examined. No. Freakin’. Way.

Later on, a friend suggested getting fitted for a bra because I was losing my college and grad school weight gain. I cackled while regaling her of my many failed fitting attempts at department stores. “No,” she told me, “you don’t go to a department store! You go to a boutique, or if you can’t find one of those, try Nordstrom.” With my optimism renewed, I visited the local Nordstrom, and to my surprise, I discovered I should be wearing a UK 36G! What was this sorcery? Nordstrom had exactly one bra in my size—the Fantasie 4510 Smoothing bra which is a conical, full-coverage piece of armor, but it was still one more bra than any other store had. My boobs were lifted, separated, and secure. I shamelessly stared at myself in the mirror, touching my uplifted chest in wonderment and awe. I snagged two, and those were the best bras I had ever bought. Eventually though, I daydreamed of other options. Where were the colors? What about styles with less padding? How about something with a beautiful lace cup? My research exposed me to the tantalizing world of fuller-bust bras, and I longingly opined, “if only there were more stores which stocked them.”

The more I researched, the more I wanted to share that same experience of bliss with other people. I wanted to offer more sizes and more colors, and I wanted to do so in an environment where no one ever felt the way I did in Victoria’s Secret. I wanted people to feel good not just about their bras but about themselves. The urge was so powerful, I began taking retail classes and realized this crazy idea of owning a store was more than hypothetical. It was now my dream. I changed careers from computer programming and enlisted my aunt and dad in the quest to bring people the perfect bra. And so, with a shoestring budget, we brought A Sophisticated Pair into existence.

PT: Your store is located in Burlington, North Carolina. How did you decide on the location?

Erica: When the store became an official plan, I lived in the country outside of Burlington; consequently, the initial search included this area as well as the adjacent cities of Greensboro, Mebane, and Graham. Burlington ultimately had the best combination of rent prices, space, and flexible property owners. Several shopping centers wanted personal guarantors for the duration of the lease, which would have nullified our liability protection under the LLC business structure. Furthermore, Burlington proved an ideal spot because we are located off the I-40/85 interstate between several major cities, including Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh. Not to mention, we also see a surprising amount of people travelling from other cities and even other states. Every time I think of relocating, I struggle because our existing location gives us access to so many diverse cities despite being in a small suburban town.

PT: Tell us about your store name. What inspired the name A Sophisticated Pair?

Erica: Coming up with a business name is hard, y’all. We spent several hours brainstorming and were getting progressively more frustrated with each other. Eventually, I blurted out “Fine, we’ll call it A Sophisticated Pair because we’re sophisticated, and it’s a cheeky nod to boobs.” Everyone loved it! The name inspired me to take two pears and angle them together for our logo, once again a nod to boobs. Our personality as a shop is funny, and the play on words resonates with customers.

PT: What do you enjoy most about your local community?

Erica: One of the things I loved about moving from Maryland to North Carolina is the increased sense of community here. In our shopping center, all of the neighbors take care of each other, offering advice, promoting each other to customers, and assisting in times of struggle. While Burlington does boast a number of big box retailers, there are a lot of smaller businesses too, and this extended sense of community permeates throughout, with all of us knowing firsthand how hard entrepreneurship is. For example, when our business was vandalized, a local pizza place stopped by with complimentary lunch to cheer us up. Recently, we organized a bra donation drive for a homeless shelter in Greensboro, and between housing communities, local churches, and our customers, we assembled over 400 bras! People are more invested in each other here, and I love that sense of connectivity.

Bra Fitting at A Sophisticated Pair:

PT: Why is it important for women to get a professional bra fitting?

Erica: Professional fitters not only identify the size which suits a person best but can also recommend specific styles, discuss the individual’s breast shape, and offer an education on bra fitting itself. Finding the right size can be transformative for some people too, boosting confidence and increasing comfort. Moreover, most professional fitters I know love to pamper their clients. I think many people, especially women, forget to take time for themselves, and even though a bra fitting may not seem like an opportunity for self-care, the experience of being waited on and having time dedicated solely to your needs can not only make shopping more pleasant but also relaxing.

PT: What do you wish all women knew about lingerie and professional bra fitting?

Erica: There is so much about this industry that people do not understand, but I think my chief complaint centers on the misinformation surrounding the retail price of bras and lingerie. Not only do undergarments require months, even years, to design, but they are also assembled individually by trained professionals deserving a fair wage and an ethical working environment. Once the bras arrive at the retailer, the limited profit margin stretches to cover assorted expense, such as rent, utilities, and taxes, as well as pay the fitter for her expertise. Despite how we market fittings, they are anything but “free.” Most boutiques refrain from charging as we often anticipate a purchase, but it can be heart breaking when clients opt to purchase online or ask for discounts as incentive to buy in-store. Larger chains condition consumers to anticipate coupons and promotions, causing them to question whether the retail price of anything is genuinely in line with its value and quality. After all, with 20 and 30% off sales, even on newly arrived inventory, it’s natural to assume the sale price is “the fair price” and thus more representative of the product’s value. With lingerie, this is simply not the case, and it’s a constant battle to educate customers about our pricing structure and decisions.

PT: You’re committed to offering a diverse range of styles and sizes for your customers. What do you look for when selecting new styles?

Erica: Fit, fit, and more fit. I am not ashamed to admit I use my customers as test subjects and often special order prospective bras for them. It helps me evaluate the advantages and shortcomings of a particular style before I invest too much of our buying budget. If a bra fits well, I consider other criteria, including whether it compliments or cannibalizes existing inventory, what new demands or demographics it serves, what colors are available, and the relationship between price and quality.

PT: What is the largest bra size you carry?

Erica: In store, we carry up to a 50 band regularly but can order up to a 56, and our cup sizes range from US A to O (UK K) in select bands. Later this year, we’ll be stocking styles available up to a UK L cup for people sized out of existing options.

PT: We love that you carry bras under $50. What are some of your favorite budget-friendly bras?

Erica: As a small business owner, I live on a tight budget myself, and I try to be respectful that not all clients can afford to spend $70+ on a bra. Having options at multiple price points makes us more accessible and in turn allows us to help more people. In fact, our number one selling bra for the entire shop is the Goddess Keira due in large part to the huge range of sizes and constantly changing fashion colors. The Parfait Charlotte always does well for us too, and I am looking forward to the solid black version releasing later this year. People have been asking for basic colors in this bra since we started carrying it (*hint hint*). We also do well with the b.tempt’d b.splendid series for US A-DDD cups, the Parfait Carole, and the Wacoal Halo Lace.

PT: What are your current best-selling bras?

Erica: I haven’t compiled my sixth annual stats yet, but as I mentioned, I know the Keira has become our number one seller. Other contenders from last year are the Freya Deco, Elomi Amelia, Panache Sports Bra, Parfait Charlotte, Wacoal Basic Beauty, Natori Element, and Comexim Plunge.

PT: How many bras does a woman actually need in her lingerie wardrobe?

Erica: In my opinion, budget is the primary factor. At minimum, I recommend purchasing two everyday bras simply because establishing a rotation preserves the elastic and extends the lifespan. If budget allows, aim for at least four everyday bras in addition to any specialty styles like sports or strapless you may need. There’s nothing wrong with having more, and I know my own will power is weak. Sometimes I must remind myself I have but two boobs and can only wear one bra at a time.

Additionally, there’s also a tendency for people to stock up on bras all at once, which is totally fine, but I think the financial investment works better if you spread it out over several months, starting with two or three bras and then adding more. A nice byproduct is you rarely run out of bras, and you can try new styles or new colors as they release.

Some of us are shy about buying colored bras. What advice would you give to a woman who loves color, but isn’t sure how to incorporate it into her wardrobe?

I always ask clients reticent to break away from neutrals what colors and fabrics they wear frequently. If a person wears a lot of mid-tone or dark tops (*cough* me *cough*), the color will conceal almost everything. No one will see your emerald green bra under that navy blue blouse unless it’s super duper thin. Even if your wardrobe incorporates more light or thinner fabrics, color is still accessible. Everyone needs a flesh-tone option to wear under these styles, but consider expanding beyond the standard neutrals like cafe, mocha, cinnamon, or chocolate. For example, if you’re of the ultra pale variety such as myself, explore light pastels like blush pink or lavender. For darker skin tones, consider olive, charcoal, or even plum. So long as the contrast between the color of the bra and the color of your skin is minimized, you will receive the same benefits as neutrals.

PT: What can you tell our readers about the bra fitting experience at A Sophisticated Pair?

Erica: Everyone is fitted by me personally, and I foster a “Judgment Free” space in my store. I don’t make comments about your weight, size, skin, hair, makeup, underarm hair, or clothes. I’m here to help your boobs, and I try to do so in a fun, informative, and relaxed environment. I get to know my customers on a personal level and remember many of them by name. With fittings, I begin the process by discussing the client’s existing bra, style preferences, and any problems he or she experiences. I then pull a “starter bra” to confirm my size estimate before bringing in all the bras in the shop meeting the client’s criteria. If we do not have something, I discuss the options for ordering. We distinguish ourselves in how we interact with customers, treating them like the people they are rather than as a sales figure. My goal is for customers to leave the shop believing the boutique experience is the best experience.

PT: We love that you offer appointments for bra fitting. How can we schedule an appointment?

Erica: Simply call the store (336) 270-6744 or email me, and I can either reserve a fitting room during or outside of normal store hours. For appointments outside posted hours, I ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice but prefer two to three business days.
