Bras aren’t designed to last forever, but there are things you can do to keep your lingerie looking new for as long as possible. How often you wear your bras and how you care for your bras plays a role in how long they last. The quality of the bra and fit also contributes to its lifespan. Bras with cheap fabrics, stretchy bands, and poorly constructed cups will need to be replaced much sooner than a higher quality style.

When it comes to fit, a bra that’s too small will experience stress on the elastic and underwire. Alternately, the cups will start gapping and wrinkling if you’re wearing a bra that’s too big and the band will only be able to provide a little support when worn on the tightest hook.

So, how long should you keep your bra? We’re sharing when to donate (or toss) your bra in our guide below.

How long should a bra last?

It depends on how you care for your bras and if you’re wearing the right bra size. A perfect fitting bra should last 6 months to 1 year with regular wear and proper care. Special occasion bras will last even longer (usually until your bra size changes). Sports bras are typically made of strong, low stretch fabrics to reduce bounce and provide support and lift, so they’re designed to last a while as long as you take care of them.

Is it ok to wear the same bra every day?

It’s never a good idea to wear the same bra two days in a row. Always rotate your bras so you can give them a break. Wearing the same bra every day prevents the bra’s elastic from relaxing back to its original shape. It can also lead to the band and straps stretching out way before they should. Plus, it’s not the most sanitary option. Bras trap sweat, dead skin cells, and bacteria. If you’re wearing the same bra every day, you’re probably not washing it as often as you should.

How many bras do I need?

It really depends on your lifestyle, but 5-7 perfectly-fitting bras is a good start. If you’re building your lingerie wardrobe from scratch, we recommend starting with 2-3 every day bras of your choice, 2 sports bras, 1 bralette, and 1 strapless bra. Of course, you should adjust as needed. You might decide to hold off on purchasing a strapless bra until you need it or opt for a sexy lingerie set instead. It’s up to you.

how often should i wash my sports bra

Parfait Active Sports Bra P5541 in Infinity Blue

How often should I wash my bras?

We recommend washing your bras after every 3-4 wears. Sports bras should be washed after every wear. During the summer months, you might find yourself washing your bras after every wear.

How should I wash my bras?

First things first, follow the instructions on the care tag. Delicate fabrics like silk and satin may need to be handwashed. Most bras can be handwashed in cool water with delicate lingerie soap. We recommend handwashing bras, but machine washing your bras is another option. Just be sure to hook your bras and put them in a mesh lingerie bag before starting the washer.

How should I dry my bras?

When drying your bras, never ever use the dryer. The heat can damage and warp the fit of the bra. Air-drying is best. For molded bras, dry them flat with the cups facing up. If you’re short on space, you could also hang your bras to dry, but be sure to not hang them by the straps as that can cause the straps to stretch. Instead, drape over the hanger by the center front – which is one of the areas of the bras with the least amount of stretch. Most center fronts are stabilized, so you won’t have to worry about your bra stretching out while it’s drying.

As you can see, the lifespan of a bra depends on a number of factors, but there are definitely things you can do to keep your bras looking new for as long as possible.

Have you ever struggled with finding bras that fit and didn’t know where to turn? Welcome to our Best Lingerie Stores series, where we’re chatting with the best local lingerie stores and sharing their bra fitting expertise with you. These lingerie stores have helped hundreds of thousands of women find their favorite bras — and they want to help you look and feel your best too. This week, we chatted with Lacey Odoms of online lingerie store Lace of Love.

All About Lace Of Love:

Parfait Team: What inspired you to start a business?

Lacey: My obsession with lingerie started as a young teen. My grandmother would have two or more dressers full of beautiful, expensive lingerie which started my curiosity in the magnificent world of lingerie. Unfortunately, it was not always easy finding beautiful lingerie to compliment my curves. It was difficult to find cute, stylish and comfortable bras in my size. I have always been a D+ cup size in bras as a teenager and young adult. Today, I wear a 34HH in most bras. I decided to start my own lingerie business to help other women like me find their size.

PT: What about the lingerie industry interested you?

Lacey: The lack of large cup sizes in beautiful colors.

PT: Tell us about your store name. What inspired the name Lace of Love?

Lacey: Lace of Love is a play on my name Lacey and the love I want women to feel when they purchase an item from Lace of Love. Lace of Love is a Christian based lingerie boutique, so it was very important that we tie Jesus into the business. Our goal is to inspire, motivate and encourage women, which to us is love. Lace of Love mission is to dress women in lingerie while infusing confidence and encouraging self-love.

PT: What do you enjoy most about owning a lingerie boutique?

Lacey: I truly enjoy helping others find their proper bra size. It brings my heart so much joy when the customer states they didn’t know a bra would make them feel this good.

On Bra Fitting:

PT: Why is it important for women to get a professional bra fitting?

Lacey: Our bodies are constantly changing, from childbirth to gaining or losing weight, etc. A professional bra fitter can assist you in any stage of your life to ensure a good fit bra or lingerie item. Professional bra fitters know their products and can inform you of what may work better for your breast shape and body.

PT: What do you wish all women knew about lingerie and bra fitting?

Lacey: The size a bra fitter determines with the measuring tape is not your size, but a starting point. You may have to try on 2 to 3 bras to find the bra that fits. After you find a size that works in one brand, you will still have to try on bras if you find another brand because each company sizing may be different.

PT: What is the key to a perfect fitting bra?

Lacey:

To ensure your current bra fits follow the steps below:

Band: Should fit snug, evenly around the rib cage.

Wire: Wire laying directly under (not on breast tissue) and behind breast tissue.

Straps: Should be on shoulders with no more than 2 fingers being able to fit under the straps.

Cups: All of the breast tissue should fit in the cups without any gapping or breast tissue spilling out.

PT: You’re committed to offering a diverse range of styles and sizes for your customers. What do you look for when selecting new styles?

Lacey: Fit, comfort, support, color, and cut. I first would like to ensure the bra will support the weight of my customers’ breasts then I look for the color and fabric. My goal is to ensure a good fit.

PT: What is the largest bra size you carry?

Lacey: Currently, 52H, but we can special order bras in cup sizes as big as “S.”

PT: How many bras does a woman actually need in her lingerie wardrobe?

Lacey: At least 3 to 4 everyday bras, a strapless bra, 2 to 3 sports bras depending on how often you workout, but these number can vary depending on your lifestyle. You should rotate your bras between wear.

PT: Some of us are shy about buying colored bras. What advice would you give to a woman who loves color, but isn’t sure how to incorporate it into her wardrobe?

Lacey: My moto is just to go with what makes you happy. I love color and I actually do not match color to what I wear but to my skin tone.

The lingerie world is full of confusing jargon. From unlined bras to padded bras and boyshorts to briefs, you’re not alone if you ever struggle with telling the terms apart from each other.

Without a doubt, two of the most popular bra styles today are unlined bras and padded bras. These two styles offer supportive solutions for a multitude of bra sizes. Both can be made in many fabrics and range from simple to chic to sexy in design. But when it comes to design, fit, and construction, these two beautiful styles couldn’t be more different.

So how do you know if you should be shopping for an unlined bra or a padded bra? Here’s how to tell the difference between the two:

Unlined Bras

What is an unlined bra?

In some cases, unlined wire bras may have a thin layer of stretch mesh or another lightweight lingerie fabric connected to the cups as a lining. Unlined bras typically feature a snug band in a sturdy fabric like power mesh, carefully constructed cups, and a multi-hook and eye closure. The most supportive unlined wire bras are designed with three-part or four-part cups and a side sling to lift, center, and separate breast tissue.

Though you can certainly find luxury unlined bras made of the finest materials (that come with a hefty price tag to match), the most practical unlined bras are often constructed in modal, stretch lace, and stretch mesh. Unlined wire bras, like the Marion Unlined Wire Bra, offer a sexy, vintage-inspired shape, and flattering demi cup fit, while others, like the Tess Unlined Wire Bra, provide all-day support and comfort in breathable modal.

Why unlined bras?

Unlined bras are an excellent alternative to padded bras. Unlined bras provide the support plus size busts and full figure busts need and support their shapes beautifully. Their lightweight yet supportive construction won’t add bulk to the bust line. Unlined bras are a popular choice in the warm spring and summer months, but they can also be worn year-round.

Padded Bras

What is a padded bra?

Padded bras are typically designed with pre-formed or cut-and-sewn foam cups. The amount of padding depends on the style. Push-up bras are often heavily padded, while t-shirt bras and contour bras may not be. All push-up bras are padded bras, but not all padded bras are push-up bras. A padded bra can have a foam cup lining without push-up padding in the bottom of the cup.

Padded bras come in a few different varieties – including push-up, plunge, strapless, contour, and t-shirt bra styles. They can be made of luxe satin, like the Charlotte Padded Bra, or seamless microfiber, like the Marion Contour Padded Bra and Casey Plunge Molded Bra.

underwired padded bra

Why padded bras?

Compared to the natural breast shape that unlined bras enhance, padded bras provide a smooth, rounded shape under clothing. A woman with asymmetrical breasts may choose a padded bra to make her breasts look more symmetrical. T-shirt bras are a popular padded bra style that works for a number of occasions. They can be worn to work, under fitted tops and dresses, and even under wedding dresses, which only increases their versatility.

No matter which style you choose, both unlined wire bras and padded bras make a brilliant addition to any lingerie wardrobe. Once you find the right style, it will likely become your new favorite bra. If you’re having trouble shopping for new bras or if your bra size has recently changed, why not do yourself a favor and get a bra fitting too?

Wireless bras are finally having their moment. Since the bralette trend took off several seasons ago, we’ve been seeing an increase in the amount of wire-free bras on the market and we couldn’t be more excited.

Women wear wireless bras for different reasons. Some like the comfort and fit of a wireless bra while others love the look of a sexy wire-free bralette. Wireless bras can be worn for a number of occasions – from work to weekend and beyond and suit all breast shapes and bra sizes.

Wondering how to find the perfect wireless bra? Read on for our top shopping tips.

Seek supportive features

It might seem like wireless bras aren’t as supportive as wired bras, but that isn’t the case. By constructing wireless bras with wide, supportive bra bands in sturdy fabrics, lingerie brands are able to create a superior fit – no underwire needed. For the most supportive fit, seek out a wireless bra with a snug band and seamed or padded cups. Thick, adjustable straps provide comfort for your shoulders and a J-hook, like the one found on the Adriana Lace Bralette, only add to the versatility. Aside from being able to wear it regular or racerback, the Adriana Lace Bralette features seamed, lined cups that lift and shape the bust and a supportive lined bra band with a multi-hook and eye closure – proving that comfort and support are possible in a wireless bra.

Consider the occasion

Are you shopping for wireless bras to wear everyday? Or maybe you’re looking for a bra to wear to sleep, on the weekends, or when you’re lounging at home and want a little support. It all depends on where you’re planning on wearing your wireless bras. For example, with its smooth moulded cups and minimalist design, the Emma Wire-Free Soft Padded Bra makes the perfect wire-free bra to wear to work. Aside from being incredibly comfortable, it features padded cups that offer light lift and a rounded shape under clothing – making it an ideal bra for t-shirts too.

Bralettes are easily the number one lingerie choice for the weekend or for sleeping, lounging, or relaxing. They can be styled in a number of ways and many look stunning when worn as outerwear or under a sheer top for date night. From lace to mesh and modal to satin, a bralette is a beautiful investment for any lingerie wardrobe.

Get the size right

The key to a perfect fitting bra always lies in the fit. Full busts, plus size busts, and full figure busts may prefer the fit of a bra-sized wireless bra or bralette as opposed to a S, M, or L bralette. Women with small busts or petite busts may opt for a padded wireless bra in their bra size or a barely there bralette depending on their style preferences. A bra fitting is crucial to finding bras that fit well and feel amazing – no matter what style they are. We recommend getting a bra fitting at a local lingerie boutique if you’re having trouble finding wireless bras that fit. A bra fitter can determine your bra size and personal shop for wire-free bras that suit your bust and your budget. Perfect!

Do you wear a bra under your bodysuits? You might prefer to wear a push-up bra underneath because it makes your bust look bigger or more symmetrical. Or maybe you add a bra underneath because you wear a D+ cup size and don’t feel comfortable going without one.

So how do you make it work without sacrificing support and comfort? Read on for everything you need to know about wearing a bodysuit without a bra.

1.  Choose a bodysuit with wired bra-sized cups

Don’t want to wear a bra under your bodysuit? If you choose a bodysuit with bra cups, you won’t feel the need to. Bra-sized bodysuits have the added benefit of a supportive bra-like top. They’re essentially a bra and bodysuit all in one.

2.  Look for a bodysuit with padded wireless cups

A bodysuit with padded cups is another excellent option if you want to wear a bodysuit without a bra. Padded wire-free cups offer the rounded look of a t-shirt bra but without any wire. The Allure Bodysuit is an example of a beautiful yet supportive wire-free bra cup sized bodysuit. Available in sizes 32B-38F (UK bra sizing), this stunning bodysuit provides the support of your favorite wireless bra but looks like a sexy bodysuit – perfect for layering under a sweater dress or with a favorite sweater, boyfriend jeans, and ankle boots for an effortlessly chic look.

3.  Try a bodysuit with unlined or seamed cups

Seamed or unlined cups combined with a seam under the bust offer light lift and support for all bra sizes. The cups may be wireless or with underwire and typically look like a beautiful bralette up top. Unlined or lightly lined cups offer a comfortable and less-restrictive alternative to bra-sized cups.

4.  Wear pasties or adhesive nipple covers

Let’s say you fall in love with a beautiful lace bodysuit that isn’t lined. Wearing a bra underneath would take away from the overall delicate look of the piece, so you’re trying to figure out how to wear it without one. If you want something that will provide coverage for your nipples, a pair of pasties or a set of adhesive nipple covers could be the answer. While pasties are typically disposable, adhesive nipple covers are often made of silicone and can be worn several times if they’re cared for properly (washing them after wear and storing them in the plastic holder that comes with them).

5.  Go braless and rock your bodysuit with confidence

Wearing a bra is entirely up to you. If you’re confident and happy without one, there’s no need to wear a bra with your bodysuit. Enjoy the freedom of going without and rock your bodysuit with confidence!

Bodysuits are a beautiful and versatile addition to any lingerie wardrobe. They provide lightweight support, they flatter a multitude of body types, they can be worn year round, and they work well layered in the autumn and winter seasons and as outerwear in the spring and summer seasons. Just like bralettes, we believe bodysuits are here to stay.

Shopping for unlined wire bras, padded bras, and bralettes can be challenging. In this guide, we’re sharing everything you need to know to find the perfect fit.

How to find the perfect unlined wire bra

unlined demi bra

Romina Unlined Wire Bra P5522 | Romina Hipster P5525 in Black

Some of the most beautiful bras are unlined wire bras. This stunning style can be worn year-round and shows off your natural shape. When shopping for the perfect unlined wire bra, focus on finding a bra with a snug band, cups that completely contain your breast tissue, multiple hooks so you can adjust the bra band as it stretches, and adjustable straps.

Most unlined wire bras are banded and designed with little to no stretch in the cups. The rigid design helps to keep breast tissue lifted and in place. The Enora Minimizer Bra is a great example of an unlined wire bra with rigid cups as minimizer bras rely on their construction to readjust breast tissue and visually decrease the bustline by an inch or more.

When shopping for the perfect padded bra, it really depends on the look you’re trying to achieve. If you want to get the most lift and enhance your cleavage, a demi bra, push-up bra, or plunge bra is just what you need. The low cut fit of a demi bra creates somewhat of a shelf-like appearance for your bust – lifting your breast tissue from the bottom up to provide an enhanced shape. Push-up bras have either attached or removable padding carefully sewn or molded into their bra cups to lift and center cleavage for a full look. Plunge bras work for a multitude of breast shapes and feature a low plunging neckline for a sexy look. Plunge bras may or may not have push-up padding in the cups (most don’t need because of the way they’re cut).

Contrary to popular belief, the right padded bra won’t add bulk to your bust. To avoid adding an extra inch or two, look for a lightly moulded bra with thin cups, like the Matilda Contour Plunge Bra. This style will smooth and lift your shape without increasing your bustline, like a push-up bra or heavily padded bra would. Also, consider a bandless padded bra if you notice discomfort along the band, cups, or center front of your current bra. A bandless style, like the Tess T-Shirt Bra, is designed to support your bust without digging into your chest or rib cage. It will also stay in place when you’re moving around or sitting down.

Adriana Lace Bralette P5482 | Adriana Bikini P5483 in Black

Without a doubt, bralettes are here to stay. We love the wireless fit and comfort that a bralette provides. They’re an easy breezy alternative to unlined wire bras and padded bras and they can be styled with sheer shirts, comfy tanks, and open back tops – making it easier for women with D, DD, and DDD+ cup sizes to get light weight support under their open back and low back tops and dresses. When shopping for bralettes, pay close attention to the overall design. Full busts will benefit from a bra-cup sized bralette, like the Adriana Lace Bralette, for maximum support.

With any bralette style, a wide bra band in a minimal stretch fabric will help to keep the bralette in place and provide a little lift. Seamed cups are ideal for bralettes as they are designed to shape the bust for a flattering look, since their wire-free cups lack underwire for shaping. Of course, you could always choose a beautiful bralette in a less than supportive fabric and wear a bra underneath, but that kind of defeats the purpose. Instead, seek out sturdy bands, structured seamed cups, and high-quality fabrics and you’ll have a bralette that you’ll wear and love for years to come.

When it comes to bra fitting, the fit of the bra is the most challenging part. You can fall in love with a beautiful lace style, but if it doesn’t flatter and support your bust as it should, you might as well throw it away.

We all struggle with different bra fit issues. These can range from the straps falling off our shoulders to the center gore (or center panel) not tacking against our chests to the bra band riding up our backs. Bras are undoubtedly more difficult to shop for than jeans, shoes, and dresses combined. These tricky little undergarments can feature anywhere from twenty to fifty components, which only makes it harder to get a great fit.

If your bra isn’t fitting you properly, we’re here to help. In this guide, we’re discussing some of the most common bra fit issues and to fix them.

Your band is either too tight or too big

You’ve probably heard that your bra band is responsible for providing 80-85% of your bra’s support. If your band is too tight, you either need a bigger band, a bigger cup size, or both. If your bra band is too big, you likely need a smaller band size, a fresh bra in the same size, or a different bra style or fabrication.

In a perfectly fitting bra, the bra band is snug, but not uncomfortable and remains fitted and parallel to the floor throughout the day. When you raise your arms, it should stay in place. Ideally, it should be so comfortable and supportive that you forget that you’re even wearing a bra.

Related: How Tight Should Your Bra Band Be?

Your breast tissue is either spilling over your cups or your cups are gapping

These are two very different problems. On one hand, your bra cups may be too small, which is causing your breast tissue to spill over the top and out the sides. On the other hand, your bra cups may be too big (or it could be a style that doesn’t work for your breast shape), which explains why the bra cups have space or gap in certain places.

Ideally, your breast tissue should be contained within the underwire and completely fill the cups. If your bra cups aren’t fitting you perfectly, it’s time to go shopping for new bras.

Related: Why Bra Cups Gap (And How To Avoid It)

Your bra straps dig into your skin or fall off your shoulders

Two of the most common bra fit complaints we hear are bra straps digging into the skin and leaving marks and bra straps falling off shoulders. Of course, these are two more very different issues. You might be fighting with an ill-fitting bra and over tightening the straps to compensate for the lack of support. Very little support comes from the straps, so tightening them will only cause the bra band to move up your back and your neck and shoulders to hurt. To fix this, choose a bra with a supportive band in a sturdy fabric, like power mesh, with multiple hooks in the back. Don’t be afraid to go down in the band size and up in the cup size (also known as your bra sister size) to get the perfect fit. Once you’re wearing a bra in the right band size, you’ll find that you don’t need to over tighten your straps. Instead, being able to fit a finger or two between your skin and the straps will be more than sufficient and won’t cause the band to move up too.

If your bra straps are falling off your shoulders, we recommend the same solution – try a band size smaller first and see if that fixes the problem. Often a bra band in the wrong size is to blame for poorly fitting straps.

If bra fitting was easy, every woman would be wearing the right bra and we’d never have to worry about these common bra fit issues. Unfortunately, most women wear the wrong bra size and suffer as a result. We truly believe that every woman deserves beautiful lingerie that fits well and feels amazing, so we hope this guide helps you find the perfect fit!

Wendy Unlined Wire Bra P5412 | Wendy Hipster P5415 in Black

Which bra do you choose when you want to accentuate your cleavage and make your boobs look bigger and more lifted than they are? A push-up bra, of course! If plunge bras aren’t your thing, push-up bras are the natural go-to when it comes to lifting and enhancing the bust. With a push-up bra, you can customize the amount of lift you need through strategically placed padding. You can even insert a silicone pad or “chicken cutlet” if it’s still not enough for you!

Contrary to popular belief, women who wear bra cup sizes from A to F choose to wear push-up bras – it’s not only women with small busts who seek out this gravity-defying style. Women with larger cup sizes love the lift and shaping that they get from a push-up bra. It’s a fit you just can’t get from an unlined wire bra or bralette.

A supportive bra can be hard to find. Fortunately, we’ve created a guide to help you shop for supportive bras. Read on for everything you need to know!

A bra fitting is key

Bra fittings are an important part of bra shopping. Before buying new bras, we always recommend getting a bra fitting first. A bra fitter can solve many (if not all) of the most common bra fit issues and hand pick bras for you to try on. Getting help from a bra fitter makes sense if you’re struggling with finding supportive bras. They’re trained to determine your bra size and help you find bras that suit and flatter your breast shape.

It’s recommended to get a bra fitting every six months, especially if you only go bra shopping once or twice a year. You’ll also need a bra fitting if your weight has changed as a change in weight can lead to a change in your bra size. We also suggest getting a bra fitting if you’ve recently become pregnant or had a baby (congrats!) as your bra size and bra style needs (hello wireless bras and bralettes!) can change with these life events too. Of course, birth control and menopause may affect your bra size as well as your period, though we don’t recommend getting a bra fitting during the menstruation phase of your cycle as the water retention in your breasts can alter your breast size temporarily (often by increasing it).

Get to know the different bra styles

Now that you know your bra size, ask yourself what exactly you’re looking for in a bra. Do you want a bra that centers and separates your breast tissue without adding any bulk? Are you looking for a t-shirt bra with a little padding that will lift your bust? What about a supportive strapless bra that stays in place all day long? From unlined wire bras to push-up bras and plunge bras to strapless bras, we’ve seen all of these bra styles at one point or another. But the best bra for you will depend on your breast shape, breast root, bra size, fit preferences, style aesthetic, budget, and purpose, of course.

Maybe you’ve been wearing the wrong bra size or wrong bra style all along. Now’s your chance to find the bra that fits the way you want it to. This could be a padded bra, a wireless bra, a bralette, an unpadded bra – the options are truly endless. By getting to know the different bra styles (and trying them on), you’ll have a better idea of what does and doesn’t work on your body. And with a bra fitter by your side, you’ll have an expert opinion on what you should buy and what should go back on the rack.

Shop in store whenever you can

For most women, bra shopping is a lot of trial and error. With your bra size being more of a guide than a set number, you never know if a bra will fit when it’s on the hanger. When it comes to online shopping, you can’t try before you buy. We always recommend shopping at a local lingerie boutique for new bras and only reserving online shopping for brands that you’re already very familiar with. No one likes the hassle of returning things that don’t fit. Save yourself the time and extra effort and let a bra fitter at a local lingerie store take care of bra fitting and bra shopping for you. You can thank us later!

Aline Wire-Free Padded Bra

Racerback T-Shirt Bras

Surprised racerback bras made the list? Don’t be! Racerback bras make great work bras. They’re also ideal for women with narrow shoulders as the construction of the bra is guaranteed to keep straps on your shoulders. Front closure bras are also a good option for women with limited mobility. No need to reach around or pull the bra up your back to get it secured. The front closure can be snapped or hooked from the front – and it’s often easier to hook than a back hook and eye closure.
