You’ve likely heard of molded vs. non-molded bras. But, do you know the difference? The main difference between molded and non-molded bras is their padding. The different types of padding, or lack of, creates a certain breast appearance, fit and comfort level. Let’s dive into molded bras and what they do for your bustline.

What is a molded bra?

A molded (or moulded) bra has padding in the bra cups to mold and contour your breasts into shape. The molding helps create a very particular, rounded and symmetrical breast shape. Molded bras are also extra supportive because the molding helps to lift and support your breasts.

The padding in a molded bra is thicker in some areas of the bra cups than others. For example, there may be extra moulding in the bottoms of the cups to provide more lift. Or, there may be additional molding in the sides of the cups to push your breasts inward – creating cleavage.

Moulded bras are available in a variety of styles. Push-up bras and contour bras are the most popular molded bras. However, other styles, like plunge bras or demi bras, can also be molded. The type of bra, paired with its specific molding, creates a unique shape. Demi bras, for instance, naturally make your bust appear more voluptuous because the cups only about half of the bottom of your breasts. A molded demi bra would create even more lift.

What is a non-molded bra?

A non-molded bra does not have molding that contours your breasts. Instead, non-molded bras may be lined or unlined.

A lined (or padded), non-moulded bra will have an even layer of padding in the cups. This creates a rounded breast shape to accentuate your natural shape. Full-cup bras and some t-shirt bras can be examples of padded, non-molded bras. (Remember, bra styles, including t-shirt bras can be available in molded or non-molded fits, too.)

An unlined, non-molded bra has no padding or additional lining in the bra cups. The unlined bra provides a natural appearance and fit since the cups aren’t manipulating your breast shape. Examples of unlined, non-moulded bras include bralettes, demi bras, etc. (Unlined bras provide the least coverage of bra styles since your nipples may easy show through the bra’s material.)

Non-molded bras, whether lined or unlined, are still supportive bra options. Many non-molded bras are designed with multi-part cups, where multiple pieces of fabric are sewn together to create each cup. (Instead of one piece fabric.) The multiple seams create a sturdier cup that provides more support than a cup with fewer seams.

Which style is the better option?

Whether you choose a molded or non-molded bra depends on what you want the bra to accomplish for your bust. A molded bra will contour your breasts into a desired shape with its excess padding and molding. A non-molded bra will subtly accentuate your natural shape with an easy fit.

It’s important to note that all molded bras vary in padding and molding. Some molded bras will have much more molding than others. If you’d like to your bust to appear bigger, create lift or add more cleavage, a molded bra is an excellent choice. You can even opt for a “super push-up bra,” like the Lynn Super Push-Up Bra by Parfait, to create maximum lift and cleavage.

However, if you’re not looking to increase your bustline or mold it into a desired shape, a non-molded bra is for you. Depending on how much support and padding you need, there are a variety of non-molded bras that can accentuate your bust slightly or provide you with a barely-there feel.

Healthy breasts are an important part of a woman’s overall health. It’s said that five to 10 percent of breast cancers are hereditary. However, there are simple steps you can take to boost your own breast health. After all, knowledge is power. The more knowledgeable you are about your breasts, the more proactively you can manage your breast health.

Here are seven things you can do to help maintain healthy breasts:

1.  Perform breast self-exams every month.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) suggests women of all ages perform breast self-exams once per month.

Regularly examining your breasts at home helps you become more aware of your breasts. When you are familiar with how your breasts normally feel, you can more easily detect when something feels abnormal.

2.  Start getting annual breast exams at 25 years-old.

It’s suggested that women who are at average-risk for breast cancer receive an annual clinical breast exam (CBE) starting at 25 years-old. The CBE should be performed by a trained medical professional. It’s a good idea to combine annual CBEs with at-home breast exams for maximum proactivity.

3.  Start getting mammograms at 45 years-old.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) suggests women at average risk begin getting a mammogram annually at 45 years-old. At 55 years-old, women may choose to continue with an annual mammogram or transition to having a mammogram every two years.

4. Exercise regularly.

Exercise offers numerous health benefits, including healthy breasts. Breastcancer.org reports that women who are overweight with a BMI (body mass index) of over 25 are at higher risk for being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The high risk is due to fat cells making estrogen. Extra fat cells lead to more estrogen, and estrogen can cause hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers to develop. So, regular exercise can help burn fat, reducing excess estrogen in the body.

5.  Eat a healthy diet.

We all know that eating a healthy diet makes us medically healthier. But, there are some foods that are suggested to maintain healthy breasts.

Foods rich in fiber (like whole grains or beans), low-fat dairy, soybean-based products, foods high in vitamin D, foods with anti-inflammatory and fruits and veggies rich in flavonoids and carotenoids are suggested by Medical News Today for good breast health.

6.  Limit alcohol consumption.

Breastcancer.org reports that “research consistently shows that drinking alcoholic beverages – beer, wine, and liquor – increases a woman’s risk of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer.” This is because alcohol increases estrogen and other hormones associated with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer.

7.  Know your family’s cancer history.

Understanding your family’s cancer history is an integral part of proactive breast health. According to Breastcancer.org, women have an increased risk of breast cancer if a close relative has been diagnosed.

Your risk of breast cancer doubles if a first-degree female relative (sister, mother or daughter) is diagnosed. Your risk is five times higher than the average woman’s risk if two first-degree relatives are diagnosed. It’s important to know the cancer history on both sides of your family and to discuss that information with your doctor.

Many items on this list are generally recommended for an overall healthy lifestyle. However, knowing they can also help you maintain healthy breasts is in encouraging. With simple lifestyle changes and regular healthcare screenings, you could prevent or catch breast cancer early on.

One of the greatest differentiators among bras is padding. Each type of padding provides a unique shape and look for your bust. From no padding to ultra-padded bras, there are a variety padding options from which you can choose. But, how much padding do you need and which type of padding is best for you?

Let’s discuss padding options and how each affects your bust, so you can decide which you prefer.

Padding Options in Bras

A bra’s padding helps shape your bust. The type of padding and the amount of padding in the bra determines what kind of shape it can give you. Here are the three main types of padding options in bras:

Unlined Bras

unlined bra

Sandrine Unlined Wire Bra P5352 in Cameo Rose

Unlined bras have no padding in the cups. The bra cups are made of the bra’s fabric with no additional padding for coverage or shape. This type of bra offers a natural, comfortable fit. Because the bra is unlined, it offers little coverage for your nipples. However, unlined bras aren’t always transparent.

Unlined bras can be wired or wire-free. Some unlined bras have multi-part cups, which means the bra cups are sewn with multiple pieces of fabric, resulting in several seams. The extra seams in a multi-cup bra help provide support, even in unlined bras.

Examples of unlined bras include the Adriana Bralette, Sandrine Bra and Irene Bra.

Foam Lined Bras

foam lined bra

Foam lined bras are lightly lined with foam to create an even layer of padding. The foam typically lines the entire bra cup. This can help create a more rounded breast appearance because it adds a little volume to your overall breast shape. Foam lined bras also provide more coverage than unlined bras.

An example of a foam lined bra is the Tess T-Shirt Bra.

Molded Bras

molded bra

Molded bras are heavily padded bras that help mold your bust into a desired shape. The bra offers padding throughout the cups, but also includes padding in the bottoms or sides of the cups. This extra padding in the bottoms or sides of the cups helps to lift, create cleavage or add volume.

The Lynn Y-Back Bra and Emma Plunge Bra are examples of molded bras.

Deciding How Much Bra Padding You Need

How much padding you need is based on personal preference. There’s no right or wrong amount of padding to choose. However, knowing what kind of result you want from your bra will help you determine how much padding you need.

Ask yourself these questions when considering how much padding you want:

Do I need extra support?

Do I want a natural shape and fit?

Do I want to boost cleavage and volume?

Do I want subtle shaping?

If you’d like your bra to boost your bustline with more volume, cleavage or lift, a molded bra’s padding will do the trick. If you’re wanting to manipulate your bust’s shape, opt for a non-molded bra, like an unlined or a foam lined bra. It’s a good idea to have a variety of bras in your lingerie drawer. On some occasions, you may want a simple, easy fit, and on other occasions, you may want to accentuate your bust.

Susan G. Komen reported breast cancer accounted for 25 percent of all cancers in 2012. As such, regular breast exams and screenings are essential to detect any potential breast abnormalities that could be cancerous.

It’s suggested that women who are at average-risk for breast cancer receive an annual clinical breast exam (CBE) starting at 25 years-old. The American Cancer Society (ACS) suggests women begin getting a mammogram annually at age 45. (Women 55 years-old and older may continue annual mammograms or switch to receiving the screening every two years.) However, even during mammogram screening years, women are suggested to continue the annual CBE.

So, could you skip the doctor and perform a breast self-exam at home regardless of your age? It is certainly not recommended. Your CBE should be performed by a trained healthcare professional, but it’s smart for you to also perform self-exams. Let’s talk through why it’s important to know and check your own breasts, but to still go for your yearly check-up.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Professional Breast Exams

You shouldn’t consider replacing your annual CBE with a breast self-exam. The CBE should be performed by a medical professional because he or she is trained to properly provide the assessment. It’s also essential that you discuss your family’s medical background with your provider so the he can determine the best schedule for your exams. Based on that information, it’s possible the provider may request you see him more often or begin mammograms earlier than the suggested age.

You and your healthcare provider are an advocacy team for your health, but you can’t work as a team if you don’t schedule regular breast exams.

Why You Should Check Your Own Breasts Regularly

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) suggests women perform breast self-exams once per month. Checking your own breasts regularly helps you become familiar with your breasts. Your breasts undergo changes during your period and may feel different throughout the month. However, performing self-exams regularly lets you become accustomed to what’s normal.

When you know how your breasts normally feel, it’s easier to detect when something feels abnormal. This helps you proactively alert your healthcare provider when you notice something that wasn’t there before.

How to Perform Breast Self-Exams at Home

The NBCF suggests one of three methods for performing breast self-exams at home each month. The method women will likely find most convenient is performed in the shower. (Check here for additional self-exam methods and how-tos.) With one arm raised, make circular motions around your breasts with the pads of your fingertips. Move your fingers from the outside to the center of your breasts, ensuring you check the armpit and entire breast.

Once you examine one breast, examine the other. Feel for any lumps, thickening or knots. If you notice anything that seems abnormal, contact your healthcare provider for a professional exam.

Breast health is an integral part of a woman’s overall health. To proactively care for your breasts, combine self-exams with professional exams, and depending on your age, with mammograms. The more aware you are of your breasts, the more proactive you can be. And, the more proactive you are, the better you and your provider can manage your breast health.

Bra shopping can feel daunting. With so many bras, sizes and styles, where do you start? Well, you start with a bra fitting to ensure you know your correct bra size. From there, it’s helpful to know the signs that a bra is the right fit, so your bra shopping trip is easy and efficient.

Ready to make your next bra shopping experience a success? Here are 8 key features of the perfect-fitting bra:

1.  The bra stays in place.

A perfect-fitting bra will stay in its place as you move around. When trying on new bras, take time to lean over, sit down, etc. to ensure the bra continues to cup your breasts firmly as you move. If you need to adjust your breasts into the bra after moving, it’s not the right fit.

2.  The bra straps don’t fall off or dig into your shoulders.

The bra straps should rest firmly on your shoulders, without falling off or digging into your shoulders. Of course, you can tighten the straps to help them stay in place. However, if you start get a gap in the bra cup after tightening the straps, it’s not the right size bra. If the straps dig into your shoulders, you likely need a bigger size.

3.  The band doesn’t ride up on your back.

The bra band will rest evenly on your back as this provides utmost support. A bra band that stays in place helps carry the weight of your bust. The bra isn’t a good fit if the bra band rides up on your back, as it’s no longer being supportive.

4.  There are no gaps in the cups.

The right bra will leave no extra space in the bra cups. Whether you’re sitting, standing or bending over, there shouldn’t be a gap between your boobs and the cups.

5.  It fits comfortably on the tightest hooks.

Ideally, you should be able to wear the bra fastened comfortably on the last or second hook. The reason for this is because, as the bra ages and stretches, you can fasten it on tighter hooks for a better fit. Buying a bra that fits well on the tightest hook doesn’t leave you any room to tighten it as it gets worn out.

6.  The bra’s underwire doesn’t rest on top your boobs.

The center panel of the bra between the cups (also called the gore) should rest on your chest between your boobs – not on your boobs. The bra’s band or underwire should rest comfortable on your breast bone – again, not on your boobs.

7.  Your boobs don’t spill over the cups.

A bra that fits perfectly won’t force your breast tissue to spill over the cups. A little side boob is normal, especially if you have bigger boobs or aren’t wearing a full-cup bra. However, bulging out of the cups from any side is a sign the bra is too small.

8.  The bra is comfortable.

Most importantly, a perfect-fitting bra will always be comfortable. You won’t have shoulder, back or breast pain because the bra fits and hugs your body in the right places. If you love the bra, but it just seems a little off, it probably is. Try a different size or maybe even a different bra style to find the most comfortable fit.

While many bras are designed to lift, shape or accentuate your bust, not every woman is after those results. Some women prefer wearing bras that keep everything in its place without much padding. Does this sound like you? Good, you’re in the right place! Let’s talk about the type of bras that offer a barely-there feel.

Bra features that create a barely-there feel

There are some key features to look for in a bra if you’re after simple, everyday comfort and a natural feel.

Unlined bras

Unlined bras don’t include padding. Instead, the unlined bras use only the bra cup fabric to cover your breasts. This fabric could be lace, mesh, spandex, etc. The simplicity of an unlined bra makes it a good selection for women who want to forget they’re wearing a bra.

Many women love unlined bras because of their natural look. However, others don’t because of the exposure. In an unlined bra, it’s very likely your nipples will show through your top since there’s no padding to hide them.

Bras with light padding or no padding

If you’re not comfortable with unlined bras, opt for a lightly padded bra to give you that barely-there feel. Some bras have just enough padding to provide more coverage. A little padding can still feel ultra-comfortable and natural.

Non-molded bras

Non-molded bras don’t have built-in padding that shapes or “molds” your breasts into position. Non-molded bras may be unlined or have light padding. Molded bras can leave your breasts feeling a little tired when the bra is taken off. That’s because the bra has been pushing or manipulating your breasts into shape. However, non-molded bras don’t do this, making them a very natural-feeling bra option.

Wire-free bras and wireless bras

Wire-free bras don’t have underwire beneath the cups. Instead, there’s only a band of material beneath your breasts. This creates a natural look, because there’s no underwire to lift your breasts, and a comfy fit.

Of course, wired bras aren’t uncomfortable. If you need more support, but still want that barely-there feel, a wired, an unlined bra could be a great option for you.

Comfortable, natural fitting bras come in a variety of styles. However, a bra that has a combination of any of the features mentioned above will have a barely-there fit.

Tess Unlined Wire Bra P5022 in Charcoal Gray

You’re faced with decisions every time you go bra shopping. From various bra styles to unique bra features, every bra is different. And, you have a lot to consider when selecting the best bra for you. A full cup bra or a balconette bra? An unlined bra or a lined bra? A bra with underwire or a wire-free bra?

While many bra styles and features are based on personal preference, many women wonder if underwire is necessary in bras. Should you opt for an underwire bra versus a wire-free bra? Read on to get all the details that will help you decide!

What is an underwire bra?

An underwire bra is a bra that features a rounded piece of sturdy material, such as metal or plastic, in the fabric below each bra cup. The underwire must extend from below your armpit to your cleavage area for the underwire bra to be a good fit. A bra with underwire may be called a wire bra or an underwire bra.

Related: Which Part Of The Bra Provides The Most Support?

What does underwire do?

There’s a myth that wire bras are uncomfortable, but that’s not true. Only an ill-fitting wire bra will be uncomfortable. (In fact, all ill-fitting bras will be uncomfortable.) What makes underwire bras uncomfortable is when the wire doesn’t fit your breasts correctly. A wire bra that is your true size and fits well will always be comfy. That’s because the wire will sit properly under your breasts and won’t dig into your skin or breast tissue.

But aside from being comfortable, wire bras offer a variety of benefits. Underwire bras have three main purposes:

Lift

Having underwire in your bra cups lifts your breasts. The underwire sits right on your breastbone below your breasts, which provides an all-day natural lift. In contrast, a wire-free bra has no wire under the cups, so your breasts rest naturally on your chest.

Shaping

An underwire bra helps shape and contour your breasts. Because the wire extends from your armpit to your cleavage, the wire creates a rounded, forward-facing appearance.

Support

Underwire provides extra support for your bust. The lifting and shaping help to keep your breasts in place, and the wire helps evenly distribute weight in the bra.

Do you need underwire?

Do your bras need to have underwire? The simple answer is no. Every bra feature and bra selection is based on personal preference and your end goal. If you want a bra that lifts, shapes and supports your bust, an underwire bra will be a good fit.

To buy a wired bra or a wire-free bra – that’s the question. It’s a good idea to try on both wired bras and wire-frees when bra shopping, if you’re unsure of your preference. (Of course, it’s essential that you get a bra fitting prior to trying on bras. This ensures you only try on bras that are your size to get the best fit.) There are a variety of wired bras and wire-free bras, and testing them out will help you decide what’s most comfortable and confidence-boosting to you. But, it’s never a bad idea to have a mix of bras in your lingerie drawer.

Tell us – Which of these comfy bras are you adding to your summer wish list?

There’s no such thing as perfect breasts, and it’s essential that women remember this. We’re all different – from the color of our hair to the shapes of our bodies. We’re not meant to look exactly the same, and neither are our boobs.

It’s common to compare your boobs to what seems to be the ideal image of boobs. But the more you realize that there is no ideal boob image, the more confident you’ll be. At Parfait, we think every woman’s bust is perfect as it is – whether it’s a 38DD or a 32A. It’s time to stop having negative thoughts about your boobs and start loving them.

Here are five things you must stop thinking about your boobs, so you can start being more body positive:

1.  They’re too big.

There are pros and cons to every bust size. Embrace your larger bust if you have it because your boobs are not too big. They compliment your body in the best way. However, a plus to having big boobs is that you can wear a minimizer bra to help decrease your bustline, if needed. It’s kind of like having the best of both worlds.

2.  They’re too small.

I hear many women say their boobs are too small – but they’re not! A small bust fits your body just as a larger bust suits someone else. Women with larger boobs can use bras to their advantage, and so can small-busted women. With a push-up bra, or even just a good everyday bra, you can make your bust look fuller. But, that’s only if you want the extra volume. Consider the perks of having small boobs. You likely don’t even have to wear a bra and that’s something to smile about!

3.  They’re abnormal.

Your boobs are not abnormal. It doesn’t matter if one is bigger than the other, your nipples aren’t symmetrical or you get random hairs on your areolas. These traits are not abnormalities – they are the norm. So, don’t feel embarrassed about boob nuances that you consider to be weird. Know your bust is just as normal as the next woman’s.

4.  They’re saggy.

Some boobs sag more than others. And you guessed it – it’s normal. Contrary to popular belief, all boobs aren’t perky at a young age. Your genetics and hormones determine your fat tissue to breast tissue ratio, which determines how your boobs look. So being young and having boobs that are less than perky doesn’t mean there’s something wrong.

Of course, as we age and go through life changes, our boobs change as well. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause all take their tolls on our boobs, causing them to change shapes and sizes. Consider those changes to be evidence of a life well-lived, instead of life wrecking your boobs.

5.  They’re not perky enough.

Perkiness doesn’t have to be the same from one woman’s breasts to another’s. There are different types of perkiness because there are different types of boobs. Don’t compare your boobs’ perkiness to what seems to be ideal. Instead, look at your breasts with judge-free eyes and you’ll see that they are actually very pretty.

When you stop judging your boobs and start loving them, you create a more body positive mindset for yourself. Body positivity is a buzz word now, but it shouldn’t be underrated. Body positivity simply means loving your body and not critiquing it. When you stop having negative thoughts about your body, you start feeling more confident. And confidence is key in everything you do.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we all know that strong mental health is essential to everything we do. Whether it’s a work project or your kid’s soccer game, life requires you to be clear-headed and present. Yet, we also know that life can make us anything but clear-headed. Obligations and stresses add up to make you feel pulled in all different directions.

Making time in your schedule for relaxing activities can help boost your mental health. Plus, a little time to rejuvenate will help you be a better you.

Here’s a list of relaxing activities to do in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.

1.  Spend time outside.

From lots of greenery to soft sounds of wildlife, nature provides a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you go for a hike or have a picnic, you’ll feel refreshed after spending time outdoors.

2.  Take a bubble bath.

A bubble bath is one of my favorite ways to refresh my mind. You can even opt for aromatherapy bubble bath products that will maximize your relaxation in the bath.

3.  Get spa services.

Who doesn’t feel brand new after spa services? Pencil in a mani-pedi, massage or facial, and you’ll be glad you did. But, you don’t have to head to the spa to pamper yourself. You can treat yourself to spa services right in your own bathroom.

4.  Read a new book.

Sometimes you need to immerse yourself into a story so your mind has something new to think about. Reading a book is an excellent way to do that. Start a new book this month to give your mind a little vacation.

5.  Watch a movie.

Need a mini-vacation for your brain that doesn’t involve reading? Watch a movie! Even better, watch a movie by yourself so you have full control over what you watch.

6.  Meditate.

Meditating is becoming more and more popular. And, you can meditate even if you’ve never tried it before. It’s simply about being mindful and present – two things that are essential for your mental health. Unsure of how to meditate? There are plenty of YouTube tutorials to get you started!

7.  Go for a walk.

A short walk can quickly clear your head because you get fresh air and a change of scenery. Challenge yourself to go for a 15-minute walk every day until June for a daily mental boost.

8.  Start keeping a journal.

Journaling is a fantastic way to relieve your mind. Keeping a journal allows you pen all your feelings, whether they’re positive or negative. And, getting negative thoughts on paper helps remove them from your mindset.

9.  Create something.

Creating is therapeutic, regardless of what you choose to create. Draw, build, plant, write – create in the way that is most exciting to you. Many people don’t make much time for creativity in their daily schedules, but creating often makes us feel like ourselves.

Taking time to nurture your mental health is imperative on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. When we spend time practicing self-love, we refresh our minds and bodies. And, when we’re the best version of ourselves, we’re happier and more productive in all areas of our lives.
