A piece of underwire that pops out of your bra is uncomfortable and annoying. But, it’s not uncommon. You’re not the only woman walking around in a bra that required her to push the underwire back in before putting it on. There are reasons, however, why the underwire in your bra poked out of the fabric.

Here are the most likely reasons why the underwire pops of out of your bra (so you can avoid the issue in your next bra):

The bra hasn’t been laundered properly.

Poor laundering takes its toll on your bra. The proper way to launder a bra is to wash it by hand in the sink and let it air-dry on a flat surface. Tossing the bra in the washing machine exposes the bra to the harsh cycle. However, it’s the high heat from the dryer that poses the biggest threat to the bra and its underwire.

A dryer’s heat causes the bra to heat up, then cool down. This process quickly ages your bra. The underwire may pop out of its casing and the bra loses its elasticity overtime due to the extreme heat.

The bra band is too big.

If your bra band size is too big, you may find the underwire pokes through the material. Your bra band is designed to fit snugly so it keeps the bra in place. A band that’s too big won’t stay in place though. Instead, the bra will move as you move. This means the underwire is also moving around within its casing, which can cause the underwire to pop out of the bra.

Get a professional bra fitting if you think this is why your underwire is poking through. The bra fitter will determine the best bra size to ensure your next bra fits perfectly.

The bra is low quality.

Not all bras are created equally, and you will get what you pay for. You can expect a cheap bra to lose its shape, expose underwire or show other signs of aging sooner than a more expensive bra. Cheap bras are made with cheap materials and fabrics, making it much more likely that underwire will pop through the low-quality material.

There are ways to get good deals on good bras. Sign-up for your favorite lingerie stores’ e-mail lists so you will get access to discounts and annual sales.

The bra is worn-out.

Every time you wear a bra, it stretches to conform to your body. So, even the highest quality bra will get worn-out with years of wear, which can also cause the underwire to pop out. That’s why it’s best to have three to four go-to bras on rotation. This extends each bra’s lifespan. You never wear one bra too much, and you give each bra time to revert back to its original shape after each wear.

The best way to ensure you’ll get plenty of use out of a bra without the underwire popping out is to buy the right bra size and take good care of it. But, don’t be disappointed when the underwire pops out years later. It’s a sign that you did a good job of extending the bra’s shelf life, and now it’s time to buy new.

Old habits (and bras) are hard to kick. We’ve all got that old bra that was once a favorite, but we just can’t seem to part with. But, there are lots of reasons why you should toss an old bra, even if it was expensive and was once your go-to.

Buying a new bra is empowering. But, sometimes it takes getting rid of an old one to encourage you to replace it.

Here are five reasons to get rid of an old bra:

1.  It doesn’t fit like it once did.

If an old bra doesn’t fit like it originally did, it’s not you – it’s the bra. Bras become stretched with lots of wear. Your body stretches it, but it’s also exposed to elements that can stretch it. Sweat and body oils rub off onto the bra, and over the years, these products break down the material. Remember how amazing you felt when your bra fit well, and let that be your motivation to toss it.

2.  It’s damaged.

Damage to a bra comes in lots of forms. There could be stains, frayed materials or broken parts. Though some of these damages seem cosmetic, they’re usually a sign it’s time to toss your bra.

Frayed materials expose the bra’s elastic to water, sweat and oils. With direct contact to these elements, the elastic will stretch faster. Broken parts of the bra, such as unsewn straps or exposed underwire, prohibit the bra from doing its job well. All parts of the bra must be in tact for the bra to support, lift, enhance or minimize your bustline.

3.  It doesn’t boost your confidence anymore.

There are a number of reasons why you won’t feel great wearing an old bra. Perhaps it looks tired and shows signs of wear and tear. Maybe it’s no longer your size, whether that’s from a change in your bustline or aging of the bra. Every bra you wear should make you feel comfortable, empowered and confident. If it doesn’t, get rid of it.

4.  It doesn’t provide its original level of support.

A bra that’s old simply can’t provide the appropriate level of support. With every wear, it gets a little more worn out. A new bra has all new components, meaning it will hug you in all the right places while giving you the support you need. Even if you think an old bra is providing ample support, it’s likely not. Try on a brand new bra, and I promise you’ll notice a difference.

5.  You don’t wear it anymore.

Another reason to get rid of an old bra is because you don’t wear it anymore. This could be because it’s no longer your size or style. It could also be because you’ve bought more bras and no longer need the old one. It’s important to only have bras you love to wear in your lingerie drawer. This ensures you can grab any bra out of the drawer knowing it will make you feel beautiful.

When you decide to get rid of a bra, don’t be too quick to trash it. It’s possible your bra could be donated. Donated bras must be true to their size and gently worn. And before buying new bras, always get a professional bra fitting. You want to make sure your new bra is the best size and fit for you.

Wearing the perfect sports bra is key to enjoying and getting the most of your exercise regimen. There are numerous types of sports bras. So, how do you know which sports bra is best for you? It all depends on the type of activity you do and how much support your bust will require during that activity. It’s likely you may need a few different types of sports bras in your workout drawer.

Here are some of the most common types of sports bras:

Compression Sports Bra

A compression sports bra is probably what you imagine when thinking of a sports bra. It compresses your boobs tight to your chest for minimal movement.

Encapsulation Sports Bra

An encapsulation sports bra has two cups for shaping and to separate your boobs. (An encapsulation sports bra is a good option if want you don’t want a mono-boob or don’t want to flatten your chest while working out.)

Front-Closure Sports Bra

A front-closure sports bra simply fastens in the front between the cups, usually with a zipper. This type of sports bra is easy to put on and take off, making it a good fit after procedures.

Padded Sports Bra

Like regular padded bras, padded sports bras offer additional coverage and a rounded shape. This is a good pick if you prefer more coverage in the cold and want a to boost your bustline a bit while working out.

Underwire Sports Bra

An underwire sports bra provides additional support and is a good fit for women with bigger busts. However, wearing the right size is essential to being comfortable in any sports bra, but especially an underwire bra.

Nursing Sports Bra

A nursing sports bra is comfortable and makes breastfeeding convenient. Some new mothers prefer to wear nursing sports bras over regular nursing bras.

How much support do you need?

Knowing the type of sports bra you prefer is the first step in finding the best one for you. The second step is to determine how much support you need, which depends on how the activity impacts your bust. Sports bras are broken down into three impact levels:

High-Impact Sports Bra

A high-impact sports bra maximizes support while minimizing movement. This type of sports bra is best for high-impact activities, such as running, horseback riding, aerobics or interval training.

Medium-Impact Sports Bra

A medium-impact sports bra, such as the Active Sports Bra, is designed for activities that involve a moderate amount of movement and bouncing, like power walking or using the elliptical.

Low-Impact Sports Bra

A low-impact sports bra is the perfect option when doing exercise that doesn’t subject your boobs to a lot of movement. You’d wear a low-impact sports bra when doing yoga or pilates, for example.

All of the different types of sports bras we discussed above can come in high, medium or low-impact styles. So, once you decide which type of sports bra is most comfortable to you, you must consider the type of activity you’ll do while wearing it.

Regardless of what type of sports bra you buy, it’s best to get a bra fitting before deciding on your size. The bra fitter will measure your torso, which will determine the right sports bra size for you. A sports bra that’s slightly too big or too small won’t be comfortable or support you like it should.

Sore boobs are simply part of being a woman, unfortunately. Of course, sore breasts can also be a symptom of breast cancer, but there are numerous other reasons why your boobs hurt. So, don’t go jumping to conclusions!

Here are eight possible reasons why your boobs hurt:

1.  Your bra isn’t the right size.

Wearing the wrong bra size makes your boobs sore or uncomfortable. If the bra is too small, it squeezes your breast tissue. This makes your boobs feel tired and sore to touch when you remove the bra.

If your bra is too big, it can’t provide you with optimal support. Bigger busts will feel sore if a bra isn’t lifting and supporting them properly. Check our list of signs you’re wearing the wrong bra size. If any apply to you, get a bra fitting and buy a new bra.

2.  Your period is coming.

Lots of changes take place in your boobs as you transition through your cycle. Your boobs go from soft and small, to full and firm. If your period is around the corner, it could be the culprit for your sore boobs.

3.  Your boobs don’t get enough support during exercise.

Without an appropriate fitting sports bra, your boobs will bounce around during exercise. This movement puts pressure on your breast ligaments and tissue and can cause soreness. If you suspect your sports bra may not be providing enough support, a bra fitter can help you determine which sports bra is best for you.

4.  You went too hard in your workout.

It’s possible you overdid it in your workout and pulled a muscle. Minimize your upper body workouts for a few days and do plenty of stretching to see if that alleviates the soreness.

5.  You’re pregnant.

Sore breasts are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy because of increasing hormone levels. Of course, this is also a symptom of your period, so it can be difficult to tell the difference.

6.  You’re breastfeeding, and something is off.

According to lactation consultant Sandra Yates, breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful, and if it is, there’s usually something wrong. If you’re nursing and experiencing pain, it could be due to an infection, clogged milk duct, mastitis, latch issues, etc. It’s always a good idea to visit your health care provider to get help if experiencing pain with breastfeeding.

7.  You changed your birth control.

A change in birth control could be the reason why your boobs are sore. Birth control affects your hormones, which directly impacts your breasts. Typically, breast soreness resolves after a few weeks of starting a new pill. If not, you’ll want to consult your doctor.

8.  You need to chat with your doctor.

If you can’t pinpoint any other reason for your sore boobs, go ahead and make an appointment with your physician. She or he can discuss other reasons behind your sore boobs or perform a clinical breast exam to check for any abnormalities.

If you are mindful of recent lifestyle changes or activities, you can usually resolve breast soreness yourself within a few days. But never feel hesitant to visit your doctor if you feel like the soreness is prolonged or you can’t determine a reason for the soreness.

“Are all underwire bras uncomfortable?”

If you haven’t asked this question yourself, I bet you’ve heard a girlfriend ask it. Wear an uncomfortable wired bra once, and you chalk it up as all wired bras are painful or uncomfortable. But, don’t be so quick to judge wired bras. No bra should be uncomfortable, including bras with underwire.

Your underwire bras shouldn’t be painful.

Bras are designed to make women feel empowered, confident and comfortable. After all, if bras were designed to be uncomfortable, women wouldn’t buy them. Bra designers would have no customers. So, no, your wired bra shouldn’t be painful.

The underwire in a wired bra gives the bra more structure. The underwire rests under your breasts providing more support and lift than non-wired bras. This is why many molded bras have underwire. The molding adds shaping to your bustline, while the underwire provides support.

If your wired bra is giving more discomfort than support, there’s usually a good reason for it.

Here’s why your wired bra is uncomfortable.

An uncomfortable wired bra is a sign that your bra isn’t the right size or fit. Many women don’t realize the impact that wearing the right bra size has on their comfort level. (In fact, about 80 percent of women currently wear the wrong bra size.) Wearing a wired bra (any bra, actually) that’s your true size will hug you in all the right places without needing to be adjusted or causing discomfort.

There are two main complaints women have about wired bras, and both are caused by the bra being the wrong size. Wired bras typically hurt because:

The underwire digs into your breasts

The underwire of a bra should extend from your armpit to your cleavage. This ensures it provides appropriate support and doesn’t press into your breast tissue. However, when a bra is too small, the underwire can’t cover the entire area it should. This results in the underwire digging into the sides of your breasts – ouch!

The underwire rests on your breasts

The underwire of a wired bra should also rest directly under your breasts on your ribcage. This helps the bra to provide maximum support while staying in place. If the underwire rests on your boobs, the bra is too small. You may also notice the center panel of the bra (called the gore) hovers above your cleavage area, instead of resting directly on the skin between the breast. This, too, can be painful and is a sign that the wired bra is too small.

Underwire that digs into your breasts or rests on your breasts is certainly not comfortable. It can even leave your breasts feeling sore after taking the bra off. If you find that your wired bra is uncomfortable, don’t ban underwire bras from your lingerie drawer. (Unless, you simply don’t want or need the underwire!) Your wired bra is most likely uncomfortable because it’s not the right size for you.

The best way to find a wired bra that fits well (and comfortably) is to get a professional bra fitting from a lingerie store. The bra fitter will measure your bust to determine your cup and band size to get you in a perfectly fitting bra. You can even bring your poor-fitting wired bra with you, so the bra fitter can explain why it causes you discomfort and what not to look for in your next bra.

Strapless bras are a necessity for some outfits. But, if the strapless bra slips down, wearing it is almost pointless. Ever wondered why your strapless bra falls down off your bust? The good news is that it doesn’t slip simply because it’s a strapless bra. There are several good explanations for your strapless bra not staying in place – and ways to solve the problem.

Here are the four most common reasons why your strapless bra falls down:

1.  The bra band is too big.

If the bra band is too big, it’s likely you’ll notice the bra slips down. The band of the bra provides the most support, whether it’s a strapless bra or a t-shirt bra. It’s what helps keep all other parts of the bra comfortable and in place. But, to provide that support, the band must stay in place itself.

You can try fastening the bra on a tighter clasp. However, a smaller band size may be what you need to keep the bra in place.

2.  The bra band is too thin.

A thin bra brand could be the reason your strapless bra falls off your bust. A wider bra band can provide more support than a thin one. The more square inches of skin the band covers, more skin it has to grasp onto to help it stay in place. A wide bra band also provides more support for the cups, not allowing the weight of your bust to push the cups down.

Related: 4 Common Strapless Bra Fit Issues (And How To Fix Them!)

3.  There’s no rubber or silicone tape on the bra.

Anti-slip silicone tape on the interior of a strapless bra is an essential element to ensuring the bra won’t slip. Silicone strips on the band and around the cups help keep all areas in place for all-day support and comfort. If your strapless bra doesn’t have silicone tape or rubber lining, this could be the reason you must constantly pull up your bra.

4.  The bra is worn out.

Even the best strapless bra will become worn out. And, once it gets worn out, you’ll notice it no longer does its job well, including staying in place. The elastic in the band can get stretched, prohibiting the band from fitting as snugly as it once did. The cups can become stretched, not hugging your breasts well enough to support them. And, the silicone taping can lose its stickiness.

Pro Tips

If it’s been a while since you bought a new strapless bra, or your strapless bra is showing signs of aging, you need to replace it. The bra’s aging could be what’s causing it to fall down.

In a regular bra, the bra band provides the most support, but the straps also help to keep the bra in its place. Because strapless bras obviously don’t have straps, slipping issues almost always stem from the bra band. And, that’s why it’s imperative the bra band is the right size for you.

If you’re experiencing slipping issues with your strapless bra, head to your local lingerie store for a bra fitting. A bra fitter will measure your bust to determine the best size and strapless bra style, and you won’t deal with a slipping strapless bra again.

You don’t have to trash a bra just because it doesn’t work for you anymore. You could donate it instead. But not every old bra should be donated. So, how do you know when you should toss or donate old bras?

Let’s talk about it!

Signs You Should Toss A Bra

Whether you should toss or donate a bra depends on the condition of the bra. If you consider the bra to be worn out and don’t want to wear it, another woman won’t want to wear it either.

Here are four signs you toss your bra, not donate it:

1.  It has permanent stains.

Even if in good condition, no woman feels confident wearing a stained bra. (And, that’s probably the reason you want to toss the bra.) If a bra’s stains don’t come out when you wash it, you shouldn’t donate it.

2.  It’s broken.

Bras can break after years of being worn. A strap can come unsewn, underwire can pop out of the cups, hooks can break off of the band, etc. If your bra is damaged or broken, go ahead and recycle it. It won’t be able to fully support a bustline without all parts of the bra intact.

3.  It’s stretched.

A stretched bra can’t do its job well. You may notice that the bra cups have become flimsy or lost their shape. You may also notice the bra band is stretched out, not fitting as snugly as it once did. A bra must retain its original fit to support, lift and/or boost your breasts. Otherwise, it’s not it’s true, original size and won’t fit you or another woman well. So, a stretched bra shouldn’t be donated.

4.  The material is frayed or damaged.

Though frayed material seems cosmetic, it could signify the bra’s shelf life is coming to an end. Frayed material means that elastic – whether in the straps or bra band – is exposed or becoming exposed. Exposed elastic wears down quickly and becomes stretched. A bra that has frayed or damaged material isn’t in a quality condition to be donated.

It’s important to only donate quality bras. If your bra has any of the symptoms above, it’s a better match for the trash bin than the donation bin.

Signs You Should Donate A Bra

A bra that is in good condition can usually be donated, even if it’s old.

Here are three signs your bra can be donated:

1.  It has no signs of wear and tear.

The first sign that your bra could be donated is that it has no signs of wear and tear. It shouldn’t be stretched, frayed, damaged or stained. It should look like it did when you bought it.

2.  It is still true to its size.

A bra must be true to its size to be donated. So, if it’s a 34B, it should still fit like a 34B.

3.  It no longer fits you.

Your bra size can fluctuate as you gain or lose weight. This means that a bra with few wears may no longer fit you. And that bra is a perfect candidate for donation. It’s likely in great condition, and you are only choosing to get rid of it because it doesn’t work for you.

So, is your bra a better fit for tossing or donating? In either case, there are drop-off and mail-in organizations that accept donated bras. Check out our list of best places to donate and recycle bras to find the best option for you. Just be sure to wash your bras before donating them!

Your boobs are interesting assets. You probably know that boobs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but there are likely things you didn’t know about them.

Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about your boobs:

1.  Your areolas have purpose.

Your areolas aren’t just pretty – they serve an important purpose during breastfeeding. There are little glands around the edges of each areola that produce a scent when nursing. The baby recognizes the scent and is drawn to the breast.

The color of your areolas is meaningful, too. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the areolas become darker in color. Babies first see darks and lights, so the baby is able to see the darker colored areola and go toward it.

2.  Most breast lumps aren’t cancerous.

Eight in ten lumps in the breast aren’t breast cancer. Instead, a lump may be a benign cyst or a collection of glands. Of course, you should always consult your doctor if you notice or are worried about a lump.

3.  Sleeping on your back is optimal for your boobs.

The healthiest sleep position for your boobs is on your back. This position provides the most support and allows your boobs to rest symmetrically while you sleep.

4.  Genetics determine your boobs’ shape and size.

What determines breast size? Your genes affect your hormone levels, and those hormone levels decide your breast density. Your genetics and hormones determine your fat tissue to breast tissue ratio, which determines your breast shape, size and appearance.

5.  You can inherit your boobs from either side of the family.

Wondering how you have big boobs while you mom has smaller ones? Maybe you inherited your bust from your dad’s side. You can inherit your boobs from your paternal or maternal sides of the family.

6.  Most boobs aren’t symmetrical.

Most boobs aren’t symmetrical. Some women have one boob that is bigger than the other or one boob that is higher than the other. And, it’s completely normal.

7.  You’re likely wearing the wrong bra size.

You’ve probably heard that 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size. That means you could be, too! The best way to know your bra size is to get a bra fitting.

8.  There are several types of nipples.

Just like boobs, nipples don’t come in one shape or size. There are at least four different types of nipples. Nipples can be flat, protruding, inverted, unclassified or a combination of any of these types.

9.  Nipple hair is totally normal.

Did you think you were the only one battling unwanted hairs on your nipples or areolas? You’re certainly not! It’s normal to find random hairs around your breasts because there are hair follicle and oil glands there.

10.  The boobs change during your period.

Ever feel like your boobs fluctuate in size and texture? That’s because they do! Your boobs go through changes throughout your menstrual cycle. These cycle phases cause your boobs to go from lumpy, to soft and small, to full and firm, etc.

There ya have it! So, tell us…Did you learn something new about your boobs?

I know, I know. It’s so tempting to skip the bra fitting when shopping for bras. The fitting makes your shopping trip longer. You can just try on bras to find your size. Besides, you know your size anyway. Right? Doubtful!

The bra fitting may add a few minutes to your shopping trip, but the benefits you get from the fitting make your efforts worth it.

Here are five benefits you won’t get from skipping a bra fitting:

1.  Knowing your true bra size.

The only way to truly know your bra size is by getting a bra fitting. A bra fitter will take measurements of your bust to determine the best cup and band size for you. About 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size. This is likely because they skip an overlooked, yet essential, element of bra shopping – the bra fitting.

2.  Finding the right bra the first time.

The trial and error method of trying on bras gets frustrating fast. You grab a bra you think is your size, but realize it’s slightly off when you try it on. So, you go back to the rack and grab a few more sizes. You eventually find a bra that fits better than the others, and you buy it.

However, it doesn’t fit as well as you thought it did once you get it home. When you’re no longer comparing it to poorer-fitting bras, you realize it’s poor-fitting itself. And, you pencil in a time to exchange it and try again. Getting a bra fitting ensures you buy the right bra the first time – no hassle or frustrations!

3.  Getting expert tips.

You miss out on valuable expertise when you bypass the lingerie associates and run straight to the racks. A bra fitter doesn’t just measure your bustline. She provides expert tips for finding the right fit.

It’s possible that your bust is in-between sizes. But, not to worry! The bra fitter knows exactly what tweaks to make in your bra size to find the perfect fit. Down a band size, up a cup size? Up a cup size, down a band size? She’s got your back. And, it’s that expertise that allows you to find the right bra quickly.

4.  Saving money.

Getting a bra fitting before shopping for bras can also save money. Let’s say you buy a bra without a fitting. Then, you tear the tags off and start wearing it the next day. After one day in the bra, you can’t wait to get out of it. It needs adjusting constantly and isn’t comfortable for all-day wear. But, you can’t return it because you’ve torn off the tags. Or maybe you didn’t tear off the tags, but the lingerie store doesn’t allow returns.

You’ll replace the bra without getting to exchange it. Opt for that bra fitting, though, and you can confidently wear the bra immediately without wasting money.

5.  Spending less time shopping.

I bet you think that a bra fitting only adds time to your shopping trip. However, the fitting can actually speed up your shopping. You know the exact size you need and won’t waste time figuring that out. Instead, you only have to decide which bra style you want. Easy, peasy!

Don’t be tempted to skip a bra fitting. The benefits of a fitting outweigh any cons you could possibly think of. (Spoiler alert – there are no downsides to a bra fitting!) If you’re worried about time, make an appointment for a fitting. Many lingerie stores offer free bra fittings with and without an appointment.

Bra shopping isn’t typically something you look forward to. (Unless you know you have the wrong bra size and are excited to buy new bras.) Shopping for bras can be time-consuming and frustrating if you hate trying on clothes.

In an effort to make the sh1opping trip as quick as possible, I bet you’ve gone the trial and error method of bra shopping before. Not sure what I’m talking about? Keep reading to find out what this method entails and why we don’t recommend it.

What’s the trial and error method of bra shopping?

The trial and error method of bra shopping is exactly what it sounds like. You head straight to the racks and grab bras you think will fit. You try on bras and self-diagnose the issue when one doesn’t fit. Then, it’s back to the racks to find another size. The trial and error method is the least efficient way to bra shop.

Why is the trial and error method the wrong way to bra shop?

There are several issues with going the trial and effort route when bra shopping. Let’s talk through why we don’t recommend buying bras this way:

1.  You guess your bra size.

The trial and error method of bra shopping doesn’t let you accurately determine your bra size. Knowing your true bra size is key to finding the perfect bra for you.

2.  It wastes time.

Because you don’t know your bra size, the trial and error method can be lengthy. You spend more time trying to find a bra that fits instead of spending time finding a bra style you like.

3.  You’ll likely buy the wrong size.

Even if a bra feels like it fits, it’s possible a different bra size would be fit better. Many times, you may purchase a bra using the trial and error method, only to realize it doesn’t fit as well as you thought it did when you get it home.

This is usually because you try on multiple ill-fitting bras in the fitting room. When one fits better than the rest, it feels like the one. But when you’re no longer comparing it to bras that clearly don’t fit, you realize it’s not a great fit either.

What’s the right way to bra shop?

The best way to bra shop is to start the shopping trip with a professional bra fitting. One of the lingerie store’s associates will measure your bust to determine the best cup and band size for you.

After the fitting, the lingerie associate will bring you various bra styles in that size for you to try. She may find that your bust is between sizes, and she’ll know exactly what tweaks to make to the sizing to get you in a good-fitting bra. Sometimes it requires going up a cup size and down a band size – or vice versa – to find the perfect fit. She can also help find your bra sister size if the store is out of your exact size.

Getting a bra fitting and having a lingerie professional in your corner saves you time and helps you buy the best bra the first time. However, if you prefer to browse on your own after the fitting, that’s perfectly fine. The most important thing here is to get a bra fitting so you know your size.

The next time you’re tempted to skip the bra fitting and go the trial and error method, don’t. Starting with a bra fitting is the most efficient way to bra shop. It’s the only way to determine your bra size and find a bra that truly fits.
