Everyday, a new hero is born. Typically when we think of heroes, a nurse or firefighter or police officer might come to mind. While these individuals are all heroes, what if I told you that mothers are heroes too? When nurses and firefighters and police officers go home for the day, mothers are still working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They don’t get paid vacation days or sick days or time off. From the moment you’re conceived to her last breath, your mother is there. She may not be in your life everyday, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t thinking about you, worrying about your health, your safety, your future. No one is perfect, but love, especially a mother’s love, is the closest thing to perfection there is.
Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, take a moment to appreciate your mom. Don’t wait until Mother’s Day to tell her how much she means to you. Tell her today. Send a text message, call her, leave a voicemail, visit her, bring her flowers. We don’t always have the option of choosing who comes and goes in our lives, but we do get to choose how hard we love.
This year, we created a video and penned an open letter to all moms. Mothers are heroes. Though they work one of the most challenging jobs, they don’t always get the recognition they deserve (and most will probably tell you that watching their baby grow up to be happy and fulfilled is a reward in itself). We wanted to recognize and celebrate all mothers. To thank them (and our own mothers) for the patience, hard work, and unconditional love they provide. The incredible, unwavering strength, kindness, and wisdom that they show. The support and encouragement that shape our lives and mold us into who we become.
We hope you share the video and letter with your mom and remind her how much she means to you.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Below, the full letter.
Dear Mom,
It’s not easy to describe just how much you mean to me. Maybe it’s because you mean more to me than words can describe. Through your strength, I’ve learned to never give up, even when faced with the toughest challenges. Through your kindness, I’ve learned the importance of being kind to others. Through your wisdom, I’ve learned how to treat everyone with respect and grace. Through your encouragement, I’ve learned how to rest and not quit. Through your example, I’ve learned how to stand up for myself and never compromise my values.
Thank you for always being there for me. When I was scared, you comforted me. When I was sick, you healed me. When I was tired, you carried me to my bed and tucked me in. When I was heartbroken, you reassured me everything was going to be ok in the end.
Mom, you have the hardest job in the world and yet you do it every day without asking for anything in return. When I think back to all of the times I took you for granted when I was younger, never once did you give up on me. No matter how many times I hurt you or broke your heart, you were always waiting there for me with a hug. I am who I am today because of your love and I am so fortunate to have you as my mom.
Thank you for teaching me the importance of gratitude and staying humble. Thank you for supporting me in all of my endeavors. Thank you for encouraging me to never give up on my dreams. Thank you for lifting me up when I fell. Thank you for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Thank you for teaching me how to love, how to forgive, and how to care for others. Most of all, thank you for being my mother, my role model, and my hero.
Happy Mother’s Day! I love you, Mom.
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14. Share this letter with your mom and remind her how much she means to you.
