Tell us the truth: How do your bras fit? Are they too big or too small? Do you experience any discomfort or pain while wearing them? Do you feel supported all day long?

We all know how challenging it is to shop for bras – especially when you aren’t sure which size or style works best for you. So, if you’re unsure of your size or tired of shopping for bras on your own, it might be time to get a bra fitting.

Bra fittings are one of the most underrated services provided by local lingerie stores. During a bra fitting, a trained bra fitter will take your measurements, fit you for a bra, and suggest styles that suit your lifestyle and body type. After all, the goal of a bra fitting is to help you find at least one bra that makes you feel comfortable and supported.

Bra fitters take the guesswork out of bra shopping by doing the fitting and shopping for you – and the whole fitting typically takes less than 45 minutes from start to finish. We’d consider this time well spent. If you’re still on the fence, think of it this way: How many times have you spent an hour online shopping for bras only to find that you weren’t sure what you needed in the first place? A bra fitter will do all of the hard work for you – and save you time and money in the process.

Still unsure if you need a bra fitting? Here are five signs it’s time for a bra fitting.

1.  You’ve lost or gained weight since you last bought bras.

If you’ve lost or gained weight since your last shopping trip, it might be time for new bras. It’s not uncommon for your bra size to change several times throughout your life. Weight gain and weight loss can affect the size of your breasts and cause them to increase or decrease in size. If you notice that you’re buying a different clothing size, chances are good your bra size has changed too.

2.  None (or only one) of your bras fit right.

Do you have one good bra that you wear every day? Or maybe you don’t feel supported in any of your bras. If your bras just aren’t fitting right, it’s time for a bra fitting. Your bra size could have changed since you last bought bras. Alternatively, your bras could be so worn that they need to be replaced. Both are important reasons to visit a local lingerie store and get it all sorted out.

3.  You’re pregnant or nursing.

If you’re pregnant (congrats!) or nursing, it might be time for some new bras. Your bra size can change anywhere from 1-3+ cup sizes during pregnancy, so it’s crucial to make sure you’re wearing the right bra size throughout your pregnancy. Nursing, on the other hand, can also affect your breast size. We suggest getting a bra fitting 8 months into your pregnancy and 2-3 weeks after childbirth.

4.  You’ve never had a bra fitting or you can’t remember when your last bra fitting was.

Are you used to shopping for bras on your own? Maybe you’ve reached a point where you’re not sure what your bra size is or where to find what you need. In addition to offering bra fitting, local lingerie boutiques have trained lingerie experts available to answer your lingerie questions – from bra fitting to bra care and everywhere in between.

5.  You haven’t bought new bras in a year or longer.

Has it been a year since you last bought new bras? Chances are your current bras are ready to be replaced. If you haven’t shopped for new lingerie in a while, it’s time to refresh your lingerie drawer. Even just one new bra can elevate your favorite outfits!

Feeling like your bra might be too small? Read on for the three most common signs of a too small bra (and how to fix them)!

Your breast tissue spills over the cups.

Let’s get the most common sign out of the way first. If your breast tissue is spilling over the cups, one of two things is happening: the cups are too small or the straps are too tight. If you’ve scooped all of your breast tissue into the cups and they’re overflowing, try going up one or two cup sizes first. Your bra size may have changed since you last bought bras and you might just need a bigger cup size.

If there is a small amount of spillage over the cups, but the cup size is correct, try loosening the straps a little. Remember: You want to be able to comfortably fit two fingers between your skin and the strap for the best fit. Also, don’t forget that the majority of your bra’s support comes from the band. So, if you’re relying on your straps to do all of the lifting, you’re likely wearing the wrong bra size!

The bra band feels uncomfortable, and at times, painful.

Ever feel like you want to rip your bra off at the end of the day? We hope you don’t feel that way! Discomfort and pain are often key signs that your bra is too small; they can be caused by a bra in the wrong size or a bra style that just isn’t right for you. Trust us: When you’re wearing the right bra size and style for your breast shape, you’ll feel so much more comfortable.

The solution to this irritating problem? Try sizing up in the cup and opting for a different style. Need help deciding on a style? Check out How To Find The Right Bra For Your Breast Shape and then head over to The Girl’s Guide To Bra Styles for a little guidance!

You notice red marks or indentations on your skin when you take your bra off.

Do you see an outline of your bra after you take it off? Red marks and indentations on your skin can be signs of an ill-fitting bra. If you’re wearing your bra on the loosest hook and all of your breast tissue is scooped into the cups, it could be a band issue. Try sizing up in the band first.

Depending on the fit of the cups, you may find that your bra sister size is a perfect fit or you may need to size up in the cup too. For example, if you normally wear a 34D, a 36C is your bra sister size with a bigger band. While it might seem crazy that you’d wear a C cup if you normally wear a D, bra cup sizing has more to do with cup volume than anything else. So, in terms of cup volume, a 34D has relatively the same amount of volume as a 36C. Which means that a 36C might be just what you need if the band is too snug but the cup fits just right.

Alternatively, if both your cup size and band size are too small, try sizing up both the band and cup sizes (in this case, a 36D) – you’ll get a bigger band size and a bigger cup size and hopefully a better fit!

Remember

The fit of your bra will mostly depend on your cup size and comfort preferences. Many women like the support of a snug band while others don’t and that’s perfectly ok. Buy the bra that provides support and makes you feel comfortable.

If you wear a DD cup or larger and you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, we strongly suggest getting a bra fitting at a local lingerie store. And, if you can, try switching to a bralette or wireless bra at the first sign of discomfort. There’s a chance you might be wearing the wrong bra size without even realizing it. A bra fitter can help sort it all out!

Be honest: Do you hook your bra in the front and slide it around to the back? You’re not alone! Sometimes it’s easier to put a bra on this way, but did you know that hooking the bra in the front and sliding it around to the back can cause the band to stretch out much quicker than it should?

It’s true. Fastening your bra in the front can put unnecessary stress on the band and stretch the straps over time. Since straps can be only be tightened so much, this is a method that we definitely recommend avoiding as much as possible.

Sure, most of us have been hooking our bras the same way for as long as we can remember, but maybe it’s time to try a new method. Here are a few tips to keep in mind next time you’re putting on your favorite bra or trying out a new style!

Back closure bras

Chances are most of the bras in your lingerie wardrobe fasten in the back. Back closure bras provide a great deal of support and allow the wearer to tighten or loosen the fit of the band with a back hook and eye closure. Demi bras, strapless bras, and balconette bras often close in the back. Our Lydie Contour Padded Bra, Estelle Balconet Bra, and Charlotte Padded Bra are all designed with back closures.

Here’s how to put on a back closure bra:

First, put your arms into the straps and slide it on so the cups are over your boobs. Then, hook the bra in the back by connecting the hook and eye closure. Lastly, starting with the left side, hold the side of the left cup with your left hand and scoop your breast tissue into the center of the cup with your right hand. Repeat with your right side. This quick step will ensure that all of your breast tissue is inside the cups. You might also know this little insider trick as the scoop and swoop!

If you’re having trouble with this method, you may find it easier to hook the bra first at your waist in the back and then slide it up and on. Either method works just as well.

Front closure bras

Front closure bras are ideal for anyone with limited mobility because they hook in the front and only involve a small range of motion to get them on. Most racerback styles are front closure bras. Both our Matilda Padded Racerback Bra and Lynn Y-Back Front Closure Bra styles fasten in the front.

Here’s how to put on a front closure bra:

Slide your arms through the straps and pull the cups around toward the center front of your body. Using both hands, line up and join the left and right sides of the bra’s front closure (this is even easier if your bra has a magnetic closure) to fasten the bra. Then, scoop your breast tissue from the sides into the center of the cups. Voila!

Bralettes and bras without a hook and eye closure

If your bra doesn’t have any hooks or closures, chances are it’s a pullover style (a style that slides on over your head). Bralettes and sports bras are among the most popular pullover styles. These styles are easy to throw on when you’re in a rush and don’t have time to fuss over the fit of a bra. We love bralettes and recommend our Adriana Lace Bralette to anyone who is looking for a cute and comfy weekend, sleep, or lounge bra in a hard to find C-G cup size!

Getting ready for your next bra fitting? It’s normal to wonder what a bra fitting might be like if you’ve never had one before. Here’s what to expect at your next bra fitting:

Setting An Appointment

Most lingerie stores don’t require appointments and take walk-ins for bra fittings. But, if you’re shopping for new bras or lingerie for a special occasion, it might be worth it to schedule an appointment in advance. Saturdays and Sundays are often the busiest days for lingerie stores, especially during the holidays. So, if you’re planning on shopping on the weekend or before Valentine’s Day or Christmas, consider calling ahead to book an appointment and make sure to set aside plenty of time for your shopping trip. And don’t forget to call ahead to check the store hours!

Checking-In

Whether you’ve scheduled an appointment or not, be sure to let the sales associates know that you’re there for a bra fitting. A smaller store may only have one or two bra fitters available at a time for fittings. By letting them know you’re there for a fitting, they can check you in and make sure you’re comfortable if you have to wait.

The Fitting Room

The fitting room is where the bra fitting takes place and the majority of where you’ll spend your time at the store.

A bra fitter will typically start by introducing herself. She’ll also ask you a few questions about your current bras. She wants to know what your lifestyle is like (are you running around all day chasing after little ones?), what your wardrobe is like (do you wear a lot of t-shirts?), what you’re looking for (are you in need of a sports bra or new everyday bras?), and what your budget looks like (so she doesn’t bring in bras that are out of your budget).

Once she has an idea of what you need, she’ll likely ask you to remove your shirt, take your measurements (typically across the fullest part of the bust and under the bust), figure out your breast shape (are your breasts projected? Shallow? Wide set? Close set?), and determine your bra size. At that point, she’ll probably leave the fitting room for a moment or two and start pulling you bras based on what you said you like.

Then, she’ll either stay in the fitting room with you while you’re trying on bras to check the fit or give you time to try on the bras and check in with you periodically to see if there is anything she can bring you (a different size or color, perhaps).

After The Fitting Room

Once you leave the fitting room, she’ll probably bring you to the cash wrap to help you purchase your new bras. This is the perfect time to ask about how to care for your new bras and if you’ll need anything else to keep them looking new for a long time. She might suggest buying a second bra (if you find a style you really love), so you can give it a break in between wears. She might also suggest a lingerie wash and mesh lingerie bag if you typically wash your lingerie in the washing machine. Lastly, she’ll thank you for your purchase, offer to call you if anything new comes in that she thinks you’ll like, and remind you to come back and visit in six months for your next fitting.

So there you have it: a typical bra fitting in a nutshell. Pretty easy, right?

Tell us about your blog Good Curvy. What inspired you to start a blog?

TS: I was inspired by my own story, especially once I realized how many women were going through similar experiences and having just as hard a time coping as I was. I want to share the things that help and inspire me so that other women can be helped and inspired as well. I get lots of compliments and praise from women on my confidence etc… but I need them to understand that it was a fight to get to where I am. I had to make deliberate and sometimes, hard choices to get here and I still have work to do. I love women and I want to do my part in helping them not let society’s view of their bodies hold them back. Women are the core of my inspiration.

What does having a ‘perfect figure’ mean to you?

TS: Having the ‘perfect figure’ started with understanding that I am my standard. As long as I am putting forth my best effort and being true to myself and loving myself, I can claim the ‘perfect figure.’ Having the ‘perfect figure’ comes from being the ‘perfect’ me!

What would you tell a woman who is struggling with self-love?

TS: I would tell her to slow down and block out the noise. I would tell her to remember a time when you felt good about something you did by yourself and remember how that felt. Then, I would tell her to now do more things that would make her feel that way and surround herself with people that encourage her.

What are your thoughts on the phrase ‘plus size’?

TS: To me ‘plus size’ is just a range of sizes. The label says nothing about who a person is, what they look like, where they are from or what they relate to. I think women have been putting too much energy into labels that essential mean NOTHING in reference to who we are as women.

Do you feel curvy women are represented in the fashion industry? Why or why not?

TS: Yes and No.

Society uses women like Danielle Brooks, Ashley Graham, Tabria Major and Gabourey Sidibe and calls them curvy representation. So to Society, yes, we are represented.

All of the ‘curvy’ representatives have gone through significant weight loss and most of them have ‘flat’ stomachs and hour glass figures. Curvy women who are not actively losing weight or who do not have proportionate hourglass figures are quickly pushed into the fat/sloppy category and are dismissed when it comes to main stream recognition by ‘society’ as a whole.

So, yes, there are representatives and trailblazers who have opened doors to allow the rest of us to tell our own stories and to help fill in the blanks. This is what will allow all curvy woman in the future to be able to see positive images they can relate to, but there are still a lots of holes to be filled in.

Who are your role models? Who inspires you?

TS: I am inspired by women like Gwen DeVoe and Francie Maupin who have built brands and given platforms for uplifting curvy body types that are not mainstream. Women like Liris Crosse who kept fighting and never lost her purpose. I don’t have any role models. I feel like no one is perfect. Many women have great stories and messages, but no one is perfect. A role model is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated. Only I know who and what I want to be so imitating anyone would be a disservice to my journey. I can only model myself after the vision I see for myself. I learn from plenty women but no one can show me how to be me better than me.

What is your favorite style of lingerie?

TS: The whole garter look is super duper sexy. There is nothing sexier than a women wearing a garter belt and thigh high stockings. A garter belt with a teddy, that is definitely my favorite! Teddies show my body off wonderfully and the garters and thigh highs kick it up about 10 notches instantly.

What is your favorite Parfait bra?

TS: I love bras!! Parfait has such an awesome collection of them, all the colors and styles. My color is pink and I absolutely adore my cleavage so the Sandrine Plunge Longline bra in Wild Pink is absolutely my favorite. My second favorite is the Lynn Y-back front closure bra in black. I just swoon over this style. It gives me even more great cleavage! They truly thought about the plight of women when they created a front closure… So I have two favorites!

What is a plunge bra?

A plunge bra is a style of bra with a low cut center gore and angled cups that enhance cleavage. With a versatile design and universally-flattering fit, plunge bras are a great choice for low cut and plunging necklines.

Plunge bras are a popular style for both big and small cup sizes and work for a multitude of body types. While some women prefer a push-up plunge bra, there are plenty of other styles (like our Sandrine and Casey bras below) that are designed to create a smooth, rounded shape under clothing without extra padding.

If you’re searching for a wire-free plunge bra, check out our Emma Wire-Free Soft Padded Bra. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a longline plunge bra with a supportive band and beautiful lace details, why not opt for our Sandrine Plunge Longline Bra in classic Black or soft Cameo Rose?
