Chances are good you know a bit about bra shopping if you’ve been reading our blog for a while. And if you’re new, welcome! We hope you get comfortable and stay a while.

Bra shopping is a stressful event for many women. It can bring out feelings of vulnerability and self-consciousness (though there is absolutely no reason to be). It can make us question our bodies and our boobs (“Why doesn’t this bra fit in my size?”) and wonder why bras are so hard to shop for in the first place.

Fortunately, with a little help from a bra fitter, bra shopping can get easier over time. In the spirit of getting you ready for your next shopping trip, here are a few bra shopping tips you probably haven’t heard before:

1.  Plan ahead

Bra shopping takes time. If you need a bra fitting and new bras, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get fitted and shop.

Preparing for your first bra fitting? Keep in mind that bra fittings can vary, but most take about 30-45 minutes (including time in the fitting room trying bras on). If you’re short on time, let your bra fitter know and they’ll work with your schedule to help you find what you need.

If you’re shopping for wedding lingerie or a bra for a special occasion dress, consider calling the store ahead of time and scheduling an appointment or letting them know in advance what you’re looking for so they can pull a few bras for you before you come in.

2.  Window shop online before visiting a lingerie store

Prefer shopping in store for bras? You’re not alone! Bras are tricky items to buy online. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do some research ahead of time. If you have a favorite lingerie brand, head online to see what’s new with the brand. You might find a new style that you’d like to try, too.

And if your local lingerie boutique has an online store, even better. Not only will you be supporting a local business, but you’ll also be learning about lingerie and bra fitting from some of the most well-versed experts in the lingerie industry!

3.  Sign up for your favorite lingerie store’s emails

Get on your favorite store’s email list to be the first to know about sales and new products. You’ll stay updated on events, find out about sales, and get a feel for their selection all from the comfort of your home!

4.  Bring a trusted friend

Plan a day of shopping and pampering with a good friend. Sometimes you just need a second opinion and who knows you better than your best friends? Plus, she probably needs new bras too!

5.  Don’t shop when you’re hungry

No one likes to shop when they’re hungry. To get the most out of your shopping trip, be sure to eat something before you go, so you’ll be at your best when you get there.

6.  Don’t buy bras while you’re drunk

Who hasn’t bought themselves presents after a few glasses of wine? But remember: it’s never a good idea to buy bras while intoxicated. Unless you know a lingerie brand’s really well or you’re repurchasing a favorite because you absolutely need a new bra, stick to lingerie shopping sober.

Bra shopping is tough and it’s difficult to cover everything in one article. Be sure to check out our Bra Shopping section for more articles on what bra fittings are like, how to find the right bra, where to find the best deals on lingerie, and, of course, where to shop for bras. Have you ever walked into a lingerie store and found that more than one bra size fit? If you said yes, you’re not alone. Bra fitting is much more complex than we’re led to believe. Since most of us buy the same bra size over and over again, we may never stop to think about why bra sizing is not determined by body measurements alone.

There are actually a number of factors that go into determining a bra size and a bra’s fit (especially if the best fit isn’t in your usual bra size). As such, bra fitting is more of an art than a science and your bra size is more of a guide than a set number. Sure, there is science (and math) involved throughout the bra’s development and production stages and in the fitting room when you’re getting measured, but there is no perfect way to measure for a bra.

Ready to dive deeper into this complex topic and learn more about bra fitting along the way? Let’s go!

Your bra size is based on a number of factors

First things first, a bra size is so much more than a number and a letter. Your bra size is the sum of your breast shape, breast height, fit preferences, and chest, overbust, and underbust measurements. Since bra fitting isn’t an exact science, bra fitters consider all of these factors before giving you bras to try on. They know which bra styles work best for full busts, which work best for small busts, and which work best for asymmetrical and wide set busts – just to name a few. They also know exactly which bras have narrow wires (good for full busts and small busts) and which bras have shaping and support for asymmetrical breasts and wide set breasts among many others. Basically, bra fitters are part bra fit aficionado, part therapist, and part lingerie encyclopedia.

Bra fitting helps you find a comfortable and supportive bra

Sometimes the most supportive bra is in a bra size you wouldn’t normally wear. We all know how sizing can vary between lingerie brands, making it difficult to find a consistent size that fits you across all brands. Because of this, you might find that you wear your bra sister size in one line and your usual bra size in another. Also, depending on the style and the bra’s fabrication, you might find that you need to go up or down a band size or cup size entirely to get the best fit (thus diverging from your bra sister size to a whole new bra size). Bra sizing can quickly become confusing – which is why we need bra fitters.

Bra fitters aim to bridge the gap between the sizing of different lingerie brands and your unique measurements and fit preferences. Most bra fitters have tried on all of the styles they sell and can spot an ill-fitting bra a mile away. Most importantly, professional bra fitters are there to help you find a bra that fits comfortably and feels supportive – so you don’t have to try on hundreds of bras on your own to find it.

Final thoughts

Though your bras might be cut and sewn within a pre-approved set of measurements, bra fitting is truly an art and not a science. We hope you learned something new about bra fitting from this article. As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Bra fitting is complex – it’s no wonder so many women struggle with finding bras that fit. And, when you add in differences in bra sizing, styles, and fabrics, it certainly doesn’t get any easier.

Wondering why certain lingerie brands fit you differently than others? Read on for the full scoop.

1.  Lingerie brands use different fit models.

From the initial sketch to construction to the first sample fitting to approval to production – bras go through a lot of steps before they make it to your local lingerie store. One of the most important steps of lingerie design is fitting it on fit models. Fit models give lingerie designers the ability to see a bra on a real person instead of on a dress form. This is a crucial step in lingerie design and most fit problems are identified and addressed here.

Many lingerie brands work with fit models who wear specific bra sizes and then cut their first, second, and third (if needed) samples in those sizes to fit. Because of this, sample sizes can vary between bra brands and often depend on the bra sizes of the fit models and lingerie brand’s core customers. Since each woman’s body is unique, bra fit and sizing can vary between brands as well. This is just one of the reasons why some brands may fit you better than others.

2.  The cut of the bra matters.

Demi cup bras, half cup bras, quarter cup bras, full cup bras – the cut of a bra can completely change the fit. We recommend getting to know your breast shape and trying on as many bras as possible to find the styles that work best for you. Cut isn’t limited to cup alone – be sure to pay close attention to also the strap placement, band, cradle, and underwire width and length if you’re having trouble finding a bra that fits well.

3.  The fabric matters too.

Did you know that fabric can change the fit of a bra? It’s true. Rigid fabrics and fabrics with little to no stretch influence the fit of a bra’s cups and bands. A power mesh band, for example, will offer a snugger fit than a stretch lace band. Satin fabrics sewn onto foam cups will have less stretch than unlined or lightly lined stretch mesh cups, too.

4.  Lingerie brands may use different fitting methods.

Grading, the process of sizing bra patterns up or down to create a new bra size based on an existing bra size, can vary between bra brands. Some lingerie brands use a +4 method – adding 4 inches to the underbust measurement to get the band measurement – so a woman who has an underbust measurement of 28 inches would wear a 32 inch band. Other lingerie brands might use a +0 approach – adding 0 inches to the underbust measurement – so the same woman would wear a 28 inch band in that brand. Ultimately, there is no universal way to grade – it really depends on the brand, their target customers, and their preferences, among other factors.

5.  Sizing systems can vary.

Bra sizing isn’t the same around the world. In fact, there is no universal bra sizing system. As such, some lingerie brands use US sizing while other brands use UK sizing. For example, a UK E bra size is equivalent to a US DDD bra size. What does this mean for you? Well, if you’re used to shopping a brand that uses UK sizing (like Parfait) and find a bra that you like from a brand that uses US bra sizing, you’ll need to convert your bra size from a UK bra size to a US bra size. On another note, you might find that your bra sister size fits you better in another brand. As always, go by the fit and not the size on the tag.

Need help converting your bra size into UK or US sizing? Check out our quick and easy bra size chart here.

Remember: There is no one size fits all approach.

It’s not uncommon to fit perfectly into different sizes in different brands. Your bra size is more of a guide than a set number. You might find that certain brands fit you better than others and the same goes with certain bra styles. Since fit isn’t determined by size alone, you’ll need to know what a proper fitting bra looks like if you want to get the best fit. Bra fitters have extensive training in bra fitting and product knowledge. They know which brands have narrow underwires, which styles fit smaller than others, and which styles will work best for you. Shopping for bras while losing weight is hard. First things first, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on bras since your bra size may change. But you can’t go braless in the meantime. So what do you do?

If you’re buying bras when losing weight, we recommend shopping for bras that fit. Wearing a bra that fits well gives you peace of mind and allows you to focus on other things. You won’t have to worry about your band moving or your cups gaping throughout the day. Instead, you’ll have the headspace to focus on your goals and celebrate your milestones along the way.

So how should you shop for bras when you’re losing weight? Read along for our top tips!

1.  Start with a bra fitting

You might think it’s not necessary to get a bra fitting whilst you’re losing weight, but that’s not the case.

Bra fittings are crucial – especially at the major milestones of your weight loss journey. A bra fitter can help you find bras that feel comfortable and keep you supported as your bra sizes changes. Plus, what could be better than treating yourself to a beautiful new bra or panty as you reach each of your weight loss goals? Definitely something to look forward to!

2.  Pay close attention to the details

With bras, the cut and fabrication are very important. Stretch mesh and stretch lace tend to be more forgiving and are often used in unlined wired bras and bralettes – making those two styles a good place to start.

You might also want to try a push-up bra with removable padding – just remove the padding inserts now and then add them back in as you lose weight.

For sports bras (and everyday bras), opt for a snug band and fasten it on the loosest hook. You want a bra that feels snug and supportive without causing any pain or discomfort. By starting the bra on the loosest hook, you’ll be able to tighten the band as you lose weight – which helps you get more out of your bras.

3.  Seek affordable styles

As you lose weight, your bra size will likely change as well. You might find that the bra size you wore two months ago no longer fits. While it’s tempting to splurge on beautiful lingerie, now is the time to seek out affordable, well-made bras that will last you the few months before your next bra fitting. And, if you’re shopping on a budget, set a budget for yourself before you get to the store and stick to it.

So how many bras should you buy? Depending on your lifestyle, you’ll likely need 2-3 everyday bras to rotate throughout the week, 1 bralette or lounge bra, and 2 sports bras. Skip the strapless bra for now – you can pick one up later if it’s not a style you wear often.

For panties, opts for sets or packs of panties as they tend to be less expensive than single pairs. Sales and panty promotions are good places to start.

4.  Shop the clearance rack

If you’ve always been nude and black kind of gal, now’s the time to try some of the fashion colors that you’ve being lusting after. The clearance rack is the perfect place to find a bargain if you’re open-minded about color and style options. We recommend checking out your local lingerie boutique first and if you’re still in need for more bras, head online and check out the deals there too. And be sure to sign up for the email newsletters for your favorite lingerie stores so you won’t miss any of their sales!

5.  Buy bras that fit you now

As you get closer and closer to your weight loss goals, you might be tempted to buy smaller bras thinking that your boobs will shrink into them, but that’s not the best idea. There’s no guarantee your bra size will change to that size during your weight loss journey. You might find that your band size changes but your cup size doesn’t or both change or they both don’t change at all. Weight loss affects every woman’s body differently – why not save the money you’d spend on a smaller bra and spend it on a bra that fits you right now instead?

6.  Most importantly, be kind to yourself

It might take some time to get used to your changing body. Weight loss can make anyone feel vulnerable and self-conscious, so try to be kind to yourself. Remember: You don’t have to be at your goal weight to buy yourself new lingerie. No matter what you weigh, you deserve beautiful lingerie that you feel good in. Your weight does not define you and neither does your bra size. So, buy the lingerie that you feel good in and celebrate every single milestone along the way!

How well do you know your bra styles? We’re covering your favorites and more in our multi-part guide.

Read on for part two of our simple guide with three more bra styles you need to know –  racerback bras, wired bodysuits, and plunge bras.

Racerback Bra

What is a racerback bra?

Racerback bras typically feature a front closure, snug band, and adjustable straps. The cups on a racerback bra can vary, though most feature plunge cups. Though traditionally designed as a lingerie solution for racerback tops, racerback bras are useful for many reasons. The front closure can be helpful for anyone with a limited range of motion and may be easier to put on than a back hook and eye closure bra. The close straps are pretty much guaranteed to stay on shoulders – thus making this a great bra for anyone with narrow shoulders.

Racerback bras are often constructed with a plunging silhouette, which is flattering for a multitude of breast shapes (round, tear drop, asymmetric, slender, wide set, outward facing). Racerback bras can  Some racerback bras have beautiful back panels with intricate lace (like our Nouveau Racerback Bra) – perfect for showing off under your favorite shirts. The only downside to racerback bras is the inability to adjust the band as it stretches. So, when shopping for a racerback bra, opt for a band that fits snugly but comfortably so you don’t sacrifice any support.

Why wear racerback bras?

Aside from wearing racerback bras under racerback shirts, racerback bras are a stellar choice for anyone with limited mobility or narrow shoulders.

Wired Bodysuit

What is a wired bodysuit?

Wired bodysuits typically feature molded cups with underwire, a back hook and eye closure, a paneled body that enclosures the midsection, and a panty-like bottom that may or not have a snap closure for easy on and off. Wired bodysuits have evolved from their shapewear sisters of ages past and are now constructed in less restrictive lace, mesh, and satin, among many other beautiful fabrics. We’ve seen an increase in their popularity in the last few years and you can now find them in many lingerie boutiques, department stores, and online stores.

What’s the difference between wired bodysuits and non-wired bodysuits?

Wired bodysuits have cups with underwire. Non-wired bodysuits have wireless or wire-free cups that may or may not be padded for shaping and coverage.

Why wear wired bodysuits?

Aside from being on trend and versatile (you can layer them a bunch of different ways), wired bodysuits are perfect for anyone who loves the look of a bodysuit but wants the support of their favorite bra. Wired bodysuits won’t let you down if you have a small band size and large cup size (28-34D-K) or large cup size and large band size (40-46D-K). Some wired bodysuits even feature support-like panels designed to shape and smooth curves – making them a great alternative to shapewear separates.

How to wear wired bodysuits

Wired bodysuits can be worn under clothing for a smooth look or as outerwear under a pretty, sheer top and high-waisted skirt, for example. We love how versatile they are and even recommend them for lounging at home or pairing with a favorite pair of jeans for a sexy yet chic look.

Plunge Bra

What is a plunge bra?

Plunge bras typically feature low plunging cups, adjustable straps, and a supportive band. Plunge bras are differentiated by their low center front, or center gore, that creates the sexy shape of their cups. Most plunge bras have padded cups or at least cups lined with lingerie mesh for coverage. They may also have molded cups or cut and sewn cups to create a rounded breast shape.

Plunge bras are flattering for a multitude of breast shapes and have the ability to lift and center breast tissue without any extra padding (unlike their push-up bra sisters). Plunge bras work by pushing breast tissue closer to the center of the bra. Plus, the low center gore is more likely to tact (or lay flush against the sternum) for full busts and large busts, thus separating breast tissue for a flattering look.

On the other hand, depending on your breast shape, you may notice spillage toward the center of the cup. If this is the case, go up a cup size and see how that feels. If you still don’t like the look of the bra, try a demi bra or balconette bra with a low center gore instead and see if the fit is better. Demi bras and balconette bras will still have the same sexy fit of plunge bras, but without the spillage that a plunge cup can create with its shape.

Why wear plunge bras?

Aside from wearing plunge bras under low-cut and plunging necklines, plunge bras offer a sexy look for a wide range of bra sizes. With a plunge bra, you’re getting maximum cleavage without sacrificing support.

How to wear plunge bras

Pair plunge bras with your low-cut dresses and blouses and you’re good to go!

Asymmetrical boobs are much more common than you’d think. In fact, in one study, 88 out of 100 women reported having naturally uneven breasts.

Though the exact cause of asymmetry is unknown, it’s possible that breast asymmetry could be influenced by hormones, genetics, puberty, pregnancy, and menopause among other things.

Unfortunately, uneven breasts are typically seen as a ‘flaw’ in today’s society (even though very few women have naturally round and perky breasts without surgery). As if that isn’t enough, women who have a large difference in cup size often struggle with finding bras that fit.

So, how do you find bras that fit when your boobs are two different sizes? And, if you don’t like the look of your uneven breasts, how do you make them look more symmetrical? Read on for our top tips on finding the right bra and a few ways to visually even out your bra size.

Opt for a bra that fits the larger breast

If one of your breasts if one or more cup sizes larger than the other, it’s best to fit the larger breast. You don’t want your breast tissue spilling out or over the cups. Fitting for the larger breast can also help prevent some of the discomfort and pain that a too small bra can bring.

On the other hand, if your boobs are less than one cup size different, you may be able to get away with fitting the smaller boob instead. But before you buy a new bra, do the scoop and swoop in the fitting room and check to make sure that there is no spillage over the cup of the larger breast. If you do notice spillage, go up a cup size to get the best fit or move on to a different style.

Try on different bra styles

You might find that a plunge bra or push-up demi cup bra fits you better than a full coverage or unlined bra. With asymmetrical boobs, demi bras, balconette bras, and push-up bras typically fit the best. If you really want to even out your breasts, try a push-up bra with removable padding, then take out the padding in the pocket of the larger cup. Voila! The rounded shape of the push-up bra’s molded cups will even out your breasts and make them look more symmetrical. And under a t-shirt, no one will know that your boobs are asymmetrical but you.

Try a bralette

Instead of trying to change them, why not embrace your asymmetrical boobs? If you’re looking for a pretty, lightweight bra, opt for a bralette. In addition to being on trend, bralettes have more leeway in terms of fit – so it’s easier to get a comfortable fit.

If you like more of a rounded shape under your tops, try a padded bralette. Bralettes design can vary – from unlined bralettes to bralettes with removable padded inserts – so there is sure to be a bralette out there for you. We recommend checking out our Adriana Lace Bralette if you’re in the mood for a cute, structured bralette that feels ultra supportive and looks beautiful on.

Don’t forget to adjust the straps

You may find that your smaller breast needs a tighter strap than your larger breast. Your bra straps don’t need to be even, so remember to adjust the straps so the fit is as supportive as possible for both breasts.

Just like areolas, boobs come in all shapes and sizes – from asymmetrical to round and slender to wide set –  and they are all perfect as they are. So, instead of seeing your asymmetrical boobs as a flaw, why not focus on finding bras that fit well and feel good? Life is too short to worry about ‘imperfections’. If you’re wearing a bra you like and there’s a noticeable difference in cup size, the only opinion that matters is yours.

One last and very important thing to mention: If unevenness in one or both of your breasts is a new or recent change, be sure to visit your doctor as sudden changes in breast tissue size and shape could be a sign of something more serious.

Like most women, you probably have a favorite bra or style of bra that you buy on repeat. Maybe it’s a plunge bra or a t-shirt bra that you stock up on in multiple colors. But did you know that there is a world of bra styles out there just waiting for you? There’s more to lingerie than bralettes and t-shirt bras, that’s for sure. And we’re covering them all in our multi-part guide.

Read on for part one of our simple guide with the first three bra styles you need to know –  longline bras, strapless bras, and wireless bras.

Longline Bra

What is a longline bra?

Longline bras typically feature a wide band with multiple hooks, plastic boning encased in fabric to smooth out sides and keep the bra from rolling up or digging into skin, and balconette, demi, or plunging cups for a fit that will work for a multitude of breast shapes. While many longline bras have underwire, not all longline bras are wired. Some of the most supportive and flattering bralettes have a longline silhouette.

Why wear longline bras?

Longline bras are universally flattering, though the fit can be tricky to get right. Depending on how snug you like your bra band, you may find a more comfortable fit in your bra sister size (up one band size and down one cup size) if you’re not used to snug fitting bands.

How to wear longline bras

Beautiful when worn as outerwear or under a sheer shirt, longline bras are surprisingly versatile. Wear under a favorite dress for day or pair with a high waisted skirt and jacket for date night.

Strapless Bra

What is a strapless bra?

Strapless bras typically feature a supportive band, molded cups, and removable straps. A strapless bra’s band is crucial to its support. We recommend looking for a strapless bra with a wide band with plastic boning if you wear a D cup or larger. It’s not uncommon to find silicone tape along the inner wings and bra cups to help keep it in place, so if you’re allergic to silicone look for a bra without silicone tape.

For a smooth look under clothing, opt for a strapless bra with seamless molded cups (like our Deco Wire-Free Strapless Bra). For a sexier fit that can be worn with or without straps, check out our Nouveau Strapless Bra in black or nude for the perfect fit.

Why wear strapless bras?

Strapless bras give you the freedom to wear strapless tops and dresses without sacrificing support. Just like longline bras, strapless bras can be difficult to shop for. For the best fit, make sure all of your breast tissue is inside of the cups and the bra band is fastened on the loosest hook and positioned parallel to the floor.

You should be able to walk and move without the bra band riding up or falling down. If the bra band starts moving up, try a band size smaller and a cup size bigger. If the bra band is uncomfortable and digging into your skin, try a band size bigger and a cup size smaller.

Wireless Bra

What is a wireless bra?

Wireless bras (also known as wire-free bras) are simply bras without underwire. Bralettes and sports bras can be wireless bras. Most bras don’t need wire for support, as 80-90% of a bra’s support comes from the band. Wireless bras get their support from their band and cups.

Why wear wireless bras?

Wireless bras are incredibly comfortable and are an excellent alternative to wired bras. They’re also a great style to wear during your period, during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, to the gym, and on lazy days when you don’t feel like putting on a bra.

Wireless bras can be worn just like any other bra. Try pairing them with a cozy sweater or comfy top for a cute look.

Though bras have been around for over a century, wireless bras (or wire-free bras) have become increasingly popular in the last few years.

What is a wireless bra?

A wireless bra is a bra without underwire. Bralettes and sports bras without wire can also be considered wireless bras.

When would you wear a wireless bra?

Wire-free bras can be worn while sleeping and lounging and on days when you’re experiencing any breast tenderness or soreness. They’re comfortable enough to wear during your period and they’re often recommended as maternity bras.

Why choose a wireless bra?

Some women like the comfort of a wireless bra while others prefer the freedom of a bra without wire. Bralettes are now more popular than ever and offer women another option to add to their lingerie wardrobe.

Does anyone make wireless bras for G cups?

Yes! In fact, we designed a bralette specifically for larger busts. A new addition to our Spring/Summer 2018 line-up, the Adriana Lace Bralette is a beautiful bralette available in bra sizes 30-42D-FF and 30-40G. Don’t worry, this isn’t just another pretty bra – it’s also a supportive bralette with a J-hook (fancy term for a plastic hook that attaches like a bra clip) that converts the bra’s straps from regular to racerback.

This bralette also boasts a wider underband for extra support, seamed cups that flatter your shape, and thicker straps for comfort. Plus, it’s lightly lined for opacity and coverage, so you won’t have to worry about nipples showing through. We love this bra on its own or under a sheer or low-cut top.

I need a wireless bra in an A cup that I can wear to work. What would you recommend?

If you’re looking for a wire-free bra that will virtually disappear until t-shirts and button-down shirts, check out our Emma Wire-Free Soft Padded Bra. This minimalist bra constructed in comfortable microfiber bra has smooth, seamless cups with light padding for lift and convertible straps for maximum versatility. The plunging neckline works with a multitude of shirts and dresses, so you’ll never have to change your bra if you’re going out after work.

I’m looking for a pretty wire-free bra that isn’t a bralette. Where can I find one?

It sounds like our Aline Wire-Free Padded Bra is just what you need. This smooth style has molded cups for a rounded shape under t-shirts and a low-cut neckline to work under your favorite shirts. Like the Emma Wire-Free Bra, this style features seamless cups and a supportive band that won’t let you down. We love the subtly striped jacquard fabric and sweet bow details.

Where can I find a cotton or modal bralette?

The Dalis Bralette is the #1 bra on our fall shopping list. We’re obsessed with the beauty and simplicity of this supportive style. It features stretch lace along the armholes, neckline, and straps and a J-hook to convert it into a racerback style. A great everyday bra, the super soft, seamed cups and wide band also provide comfortable support for sleeping or lounging. We’re can’t wait to pick up this style in Black, Navy, and Nude this fall!

Bra sizing calculators have been around for a while. They’ve done a pretty good job of helping women get an idea of what their bra size could be, but they’re far from perfect.

Let’s discuss the pros and cons of using an online bra fitting calculator:

Pros

Bra fitting calculators are great for two purposes: (1) they provide an estimate of what your bra size could be, thus narrowing down size options and giving you a better starting point, and (2) there are a few that are capable of determining your bra sister size, which consists of two different bra sizes that have relatively the same cup volume as your regular bra size.

I think it’s important to mention that there are certainly more sophisticated bra sizing calculators out there that use consumer data and algorithms to predict your bra size, but the majority of calculators online are pretty basic.

In fact, most online calculators only ask for two or three of the following measurements – your overbust measurement, your chest measurement, and your underbust measurement. The overbust measurement is measured comfortably at the fullest part of the bust with the tape measure parallel to the floor. The chest measurement is measured directly under your armpits and above your bust with the tape measure wrapped around the body horizontally. The underbust measurement is measured under the bust with the tape measure again parallel to the floor.

Once you’ve inputted your measurements into the calculator, the calculator then provides a possible bra size based on the numbers given. While it might seem simple and easy, this is the point where bra fit problems typically tend to occur and one of the reasons why you can’t rely on a bra fitting calculator alone to determine your bra size.

Cons

Remember: bra fitting is NOT an exact science. Your bra size is determined by several different factors – your breast shape, breast size, breast root height, and breast root width among them – and bra sizing calculators do not always guess the correct bra size. Instead, they are designed to give you an idea of what your bra size could be.

Here are a few more cons to consider:

1.  It’s easy to measure incorrectly at home

If it’s your first time measuring your bra size, you might accidentally measure over a sports bra, minimizer bra, or push-up bra. These bra styles can skew measurements and give you an inaccurate bra size.

It’s best to measure your bra size in front of a mirror while wearing an unpadded wire bra that currently fits well. You also have to make sure to adjust the bra before measuring, which is often an overlooked step. You can’t simply put the bra on and measure – you have to make sure first that the straps are adjusted and the band is as parallel to the floor as possible. This will help you get a more accurate measurement, but it could still be off.

2.  You might have trouble filling out the questions

Let’s say you’re turning to an online bra sizing calculator because you’re shopping for new bras to replace your old worn-out ones. You think you wear a certain bra size, but you’re not entirely sure because your weight has changed since you last bought bras and your current bras are anything but uplifting. What if you’re not able to answer questions on band fit and cup fit? What if you don’t know what a well-fitting bra looks like? These questions can be difficult to answer. Plus, asking for your current band size and current cup size won’t help you much if you’re currently wearing the wrong size bra.

3.  Bra sizing calculators do not replace a bra fitter

Bra fitters are experts in bra sizing and fit. Their job is to help women just like you who are shopping for new bras. Plus, they know how different brands fit and can introduce you to brands you never would have tried before. And, they know exactly which bra styles will work best for your breast shape and budget.

If you want to save yourself the trouble of ordering a bunch of sizes and returning the bras that don’t fit, take a trip to your local lingerie store. Not only are the bra fitters there incredibly knowledgeable, but they’re also trained to help you find bras that fit well and feel good. How amazing does that sound?

Can you depend on your strapless bra? Strapless bras are one of the most challenging bra styles to shop for. We’ve talked with many, many women who have struggled with finding the right strapless bra until they tried Parfait.

Looking for a strapless bra that won’t let you down? Check out our top tips and picks for maximum support below:

1.  Get a bra fitting before you buy a new strapless bra

Bra fittings are seriously life-changing. If your bra size has recently changed or if haven’t had a bra fitting in six months or more, it’s time to visit your local lingerie store. In most cases, a bra fitting can sort out common bra fit issues and ensure that you’re wearing the right size in each brand. Since bras can fit differently from brand to brand, another benefit of visiting a local lingerie store is having a bra fitter hand pick bras for you to try on – so you won’t have to waste precious time going through all of the bras yourself.

2.  Try a longline bustier

Every outfit should start with the right foundations (your lingerie of course!) A longline bustier is the perfect starting point. These undergarments are known for their wide, supportive bands (often with plastic boning to keep the bra from rolling up or digging into skin). If you’re in the mood for a longline bustier, we recommend our Elissa Low Back Bustier. With its demi cups and backless fit, this versatile style goes perfectly under almost any strapless special occasion or wedding dress. Plus, it’s curved seams and boning nip in the waist and smooth out the tummy and hips.

3.  Don’t worry about the size on the tag

With strapless bras, you’ll need a snug, but not uncomfortable fit if you want the bra to stay in place. We recommend wearing your new bra on the loosest hook with the band running parallel to the floor. If the band is riding up in the back or falling down, the band is too big. If the cup fits just right but the fit of the band still feels off, opt for a band size smaller and a cup size bigger (your bra sister size) and see if you feel more supported. If you don’t have any silicone allergies or skin sensitivity, you could also look for bras with silicone along the inner band wings and cups to help keep it in place.

4.  Get the fit right

Hook the bra either at the back or at the front and twist it around to the back. Pull the band up so the bra band is running parallel to the floor. Then, while holding the left cup with your left hand, use your right hand to scoop your breast tissue into the cup and to the center of the bra. Next, hold the right cup with your right hand and use your left hand to scoop your breast tissue into the cup and to the center of the bra. Check to make sure all your breast tissue is inside of the cup’s underwire. Once everything is secure, try a t-shirt or strapless top over the bra to see how it looks under clothing. A well-fitting strapless bra should virtually disappear under clothing.

Above all, fit is paramount when it comes to strapless bras. If you’ve been struggling with finding a strapless bra that fits well and stays in place, head over to your local lingerie store. They’ll help you find exactly what you need.
