How well do you know your bra styles? We’re covering your favorites and more in our multi-part guide.

Read on for part three of our simple guide with two more bra styles you need to know – unlined wire bras and Y-back front closure bras.

Unlined Wire Bra

What is an unlined wire bra?

Unlined wire bras typically feature wired cups, adjustable straps, and a supportive band with a back hook and eye closure. Some unlined wire bras have a piece of sheer lingerie mesh sewn into the inside of the bra’s cups for comfort. But, rest assured, the mesh is only there to enhance the fit and doesn’t take away from the sexy look of the bra.

Unlined wire bras are often designed with multi-part cups (like our Amour Unlined Wire Bra). The three-part cups of the Amour Unlined Wire Bra shape, center, and lift the bust. Depending on the cut of the cups (which can vary), unlined wire bras can work for many breast shapes, including round, teardrop, slender, wide set, and outward facing breast shapes.

Coverage can also vary with unlined wire bras. Some are constructed with demi cup or balconette cups, while others have full coverage cups designed to cover the breasts entirely.

Why wear unlined wire bras?

Unlined wire bras may not offer the same rounded shape as their contour bra sisters, but that isn’t the reason why women choose them. Unlined wire bras are amazing supportive bras. They offer the same superior level of support as contour bras (and arguably even more so for DD+ cup sizes when we’re talking about multi-part cup unlined wire bras). They’re a lighter, less bulky alternative to padded bras and molded bras. And they’re often constructed in unbelievably beautiful fabrics – with some even looking like gorgeous, wearable art.

How to wear unlined wire bras

Wear your unlined wire bras under your favorite tops, sweaters, t-shirts, and dresses. Look for modal and cotton cups for extra comfort. Lace unlined wire bras look best under loose-fitting tanks, sheer tops, and slouchy sweaters.

Y Back Front Closure Bra

What is a Y-back front closure bra?

Y-back front closure bras (similar to T-back bras), typically feature a front closure, adjustable straps, and a supportive band. The cups can be molded or cut and sewn. The combination of the shape and placement of the cups and the front fastener (as opposed to a back hook and eye closure) often results in a plunging shape with a low center gore. Unlike other bras, front closure bras do not have adjustable bands, so getting a great fit is crucial for maximum support. We suggest visiting a local lingerie store to try on front closure bras in person instead of buying them online as the fit can be tricky to get right.

Why wear Y-back front closure bras?

Y-back front closure bras are designed to be worn under racerback and t-back tops and dresses. The thin straps stay in place and remain hidden, so the focus is on your outfit and not what’s underneath. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about your bra straps falling off your shoulders with a front closure bra.

Speaking of the front closure, the front fastening design makes this bra style easier to put on and take off if you have limited mobility. Women with narrow shoulders can rest assured that their straps will stay in place when they opt for a front closure bra.
