When was the last time you bought new bras? Depending on your budget, a new bra might feel more like a splurge than a regular purchase.

Often, the higher the quality of a bra, the more expensive it is. We all know that there is a lot that goes into the pricing of a piece of lingerie, but it can be incredibly frustrating when you fall in love with an expensive bra or wear a hard-to-find bra size that renders new bras out of your budget.

Unfortunately, bras aren’t designed to last forever. As such, we recommend refreshing your lingerie drawer every six months. By this point, your everyday bras will likely need to be replaced, repaired, or thrown out. Depending on how many bras you have in your lingerie wardrobe and how often you change your bra, your bras should last you at least six months (high-quality bras may last a year or more).

So how do you shop for lingerie guilt-free without overspending? Here’s how to work new lingerie into your budget:

Save a little each month

Try putting a small portion of your paychecks into a savings account dedicated to new clothes and lingerie. By putting money in a separate account, you’ll be less tempted to spend it day to day. Saving $20 or $30 per paycheck is a good start. After six months of saving, you should have around $120-$180 saved in your shopping account – enough for two or three new bras.

Another way to save money without really thinking about it? Try cutting back on daily purchases that aren’t necessities. For example, if coffee or makeup is your vice, consider making coffee a few days at home and playing with the makeup that you have for a month or two. The money that you would typically spend on those things could then be transferred into your shopping account for future use.

Be a savvy shopper

When you’re on a budget, sales are your best friend. Do you have a favorite local lingerie boutique? Ask them how often they have sales and if they have any promotions or discounts currently going on. Some stores offer ‘Buy one, get one’ promotions and gift with purchase promotions throughout the year.

If you’re wondering what the best time to shop for lingerie is, plan your shopping trips around January and July. Nordstrom, for example, has a big sale called the Anniversary Sale every July. This is the perfect time to stock up on new lingerie at a reduced price (and you’ll be shopping next season’s trends early which is a plus).

Shopping online has its perks too. Subscribing to your favorite store’s email newsletter and social media accounts can help to keep you updated on their sales and promotions so you never miss a good deal.

By saving a little throughout the year and shopping around for the best sales, it’s possible to shop guilt-free for bras and underwear and stay within your budget.

Love them or hate them – strapless bras are one of the most challenging styles to shop for. No matter how much we try to avoid shopping for a strapless bra, we all end up needing one at some point.

If you’re convinced you’ll never find a strapless bra that fits, we’re here to change your mind. We’re certain there’s a strapless bra out there for you – you just have to know where to look (your local lingerie boutique is a good place to start).

Whether you’re shopping for a strapless bra for a special occasion dress or a cute top you just purchased, here’s how to buy the perfect strapless bra:

Get the fit right

You’ve probably heard that 85-90% of a bra’s support comes from its band. So in order for your strapless bra to stay up, you’re going to need a snug band. When it comes to fit, the fit of the band directly affects the support of the bra. We typically recommend being able to fit two fingers between your skin and the bra band. This is especially true for a strapless bra.

You might find that the band of a strapless bra in your regular bra size moves when you move or raise your arms. If this is this case, we suggest trying your bra sister size with a smaller band size. To get this size, you’ll need to go down in the band and up in the cup. For example, the bra sister size for a 34DDD (US bra sizing) or 34E (UK), is a 32DDDD/G (US) or 32 F (UK).

Of course, we always recommend getting a bra fitting before a new bra. The bra fitters at your local lingerie boutique can help you out with a bra fitting and suggest strapless bras that will fit you perfectly. Which brings us to our next thing to consider…

Pay close attention to the construction

Looking for a strapless bra that won’t show under your outfits? A molded contour strapless bra is exactly what you need. This style has seamless, molded cups that will give your boobs a rounded shape under clothing and also provide hidden support.

The Jeanie Contour Strapless Bra (a supportive strapless bra made of microfiber) and the Elissa Contour Strapless Bra (a versatile strapless bra with beautiful lace details) are great options for you if this is what you’re searching for.

For the most supportive fit, we recommend a strapless bra with a wide band and boning in the band. The boning works to prevent the bra band from rolling up. A wide band with multiple hooks is much more supportive than a bra with a thin band or no band (like a backless strapless bra, for example).

Also, be sure to take a look at the inside of the bra. Is there silicone tape along the inner cups and wings of the bra band? The silicone tape adheres to your body to help keep the bra in place.

Lastly, check out the fabric on the cups and band. The most supportive strapless bras use a sturdy fabric, like power mesh, to line the wings of the bra – making it possible to get a phenomenal fit in your regular bra size. If the bra uses a stretchy or unlined fabric, you may want to size down in the band and up in the cup to get the best fit.

Remember: A strapless bra may never give you the same lift as your favorite t-shirt bra. But you can still find a supportive strapless bra that fits perfectly if you keep these tips in mind.

Does your bra gap in the front? Gaping in the center gore or cups is a telltale sign of a poorly fitting bra. When you’re wearing the right bra, your breast tissue is fully contained in the cups, the band stays in place even when you raise your arms, and the straps never fall off your shoulders.

Extra space in the cups or space between your breastbone and the center front can typically be fixed by changing the bra size. If you find that sizing isn’t the issue, you might simply need a different style of bra.

Often, your breast shape determines if a style will work for you or not. Women with close set breasts or augmented breasts may find it difficult to get a good fit with a bra that doesn’t have a low center gore. A tall center gore may never fully tact against their breastbone because the shape and fullness of their breast tissue.

In this article, we’re exploring the two most common areas of bra gaping: the cups and the center gore. Read on for everything you need to know.

Check the fit of your bra first

First things first, in order to determine where exactly the bra fit problem lies, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing your bra properly. If you’re wearing a bra that doesn’t fit well, it will likely move throughout the day. You might find yourself adjusting your bra band or fixing a fallen strap.

Since we’re only discussing the fit of the cups and center gore in this article, you’ll need to make sure your bra band and straps are fitting as well as possible.

Here’s how to check the fit of your bra at home:

First, check the fit of the bra band. Is it parallel to the floor? Can you fit two fingers between your skin and the bra band? If you said yes to both, you’re ready to move on to the next step. If not, it’s probably time for a bra fitting and new bras.

For the next step, scoop your breast tissue completely into the cups. You want your breast tissue to be encapsulated within the underwire of the bra’s cups. Bra fitters often call this the ‘swoop and scoop’.

Then, take a look at your straps. The straps should be tight enough so they stay in place, but loose enough so they don’t cause your bra band to move up your back. A good rule of thumb: You should be able to fit two fingers between your skin and the strap.

Bra fit problem #1:

The cups gap

If your bra cups are gaping, figure out where the gap is first. Is there extra space at the top of the cup where the strap meets the cup? This could mean that your straps are too loose or that you’re wearing the wrong bra size. On the other hand, there may be extra space in the cups. If you’ve already scooped all of your breast tissue into the cups and you still notice gaping, you likely need a smaller cup size.

Bra fit problem #2:

The center gore gaps

In a perfect fit, the center gore (or center panel) of the bra should tact against your breastbone. But with some breast shapes, this is very hard to achieve. We suggest looking for a bra that lies as flat as possible against your sternum without feeling uncomfortable. The center gore of the bra helps to separate breast tissue. With three-part cup bras, a well-fitting center gore is crucial to the fit. A three-part bra is designed to lift, separate, and center breast tissue. Much of the lifting and centering is done through the construction of the bra’s cups, but the center gore plays a key role in breast separation.

If you’re not sure which breast shape you have or you can’t figure out why your bras aren’t fitting as well as they should, we suggest getting a bra fitting at a local lingerie store. A bra fitter can help you find bras that fit your boobs well and feel amazing. Perfect!

Bra sizing can be confusing. You may know that your bra size is made up of a band size and a cup size. Band sizes can range anywhere from 26 inches to 46 inches and larger. Cup sizes can vary anywhere from an AA cup to a J cup and beyond.

But do you know that each cup size fits different? It’s true. For example, a 36C bra will fit smaller in the cup than a 36D bra. This is why most women typically go up in the cup size when they notice their bra is feeling a little small.

It might seem like a D cup is huge, but when you compare it to a J cup, it’s actually on the smaller side of the cup size spectrum. Plus, a cup size doesn’t mean anything without a band size in front of it.

Here’s why: If we look at bra sister sizing, which finds the two bras with the closest cup volume to your current bra size, we’ll find that a 36DD, 34DDD/E, and 38D all fit relatively the same in the cup. The biggest difference with these bra sizes is the fit of the band and the placement of the underwire. Typically, the cups are cut wider (though some are cut deeper) as the bra size gets larger. So you’ll notice a difference in the fit of the cups – though they should fit your breasts just fine – and a difference in the fit of the band.

Remember: Not all cup sizes are created equal. So what’s the difference between a D cup and a DD cup and when should you size up or size down? Read on for everything you need to know.

D Cup

A D cup will fit smaller than a DD cup. If you normally wear a C cup and you’re noticing that your breast tissue is overflowing out of your bra cups, you may need a bigger cup size.

DD Cup

A DD cup will fit bigger than a D cup. If your breast tissue is overflowing out of a D cup or you’re noticing a gap in your DDD/E bra cups, you might want to try a DD cup.

Remember: A US DD and a UK DD cup should fit the relatively the same. US and UK sizes starts to look different when we’re talking about a US DDD or UK E cup and larger.

When to size down to a D cup

Do you normally wear a DD bra? Have you recently lost weight? If your bra band fits perfect but your bra cups feel big, you might need to size down to a D cup. A well-fitting bra should contain your breast tissue completely without any gaps in the cup. Since 85-90% of your bra’s support comes from the band, it should also stay in place even if you move your straps off your shoulders. Changing the size of the cup instantly changes the fit of a bra.

When to size up to a DD cup

We recommend sizing up to a DD cup if you notice any breast tissue spillage or experience any discomfort in your C or D bras. It can be shocking to find out that you’ve been wearing the wrong bra size. When you’re bra shopping, always focus on the fit instead of the size on the tag. Your size is more of a guide than a set rule. You might find your new favorite bra in a size you never would have tried. How amazing is that?

It’s that time again – the time when you realize that you need new bras. Every six months or so, you clean out your bra and panty drawers. You make piles of what to keep, what to toss, and what to donate. Some bras are beyond repair and go straight to the trash bin while others get washed or repaired. Then you take inventory of what’s left. What are you missing in your lingerie wardrobe? Do you need a strapless bra or a racerback bra? Are you happy with your everyday bras or do you wish you had something different?

While the idea of going bra shopping again might seem overwhelming, we’re here to help. We recommend shopping at your local lingerie boutique as it is one of the best places to shop for new bras.

Here’s how to save time and money and feel more confident than ever when shopping for new bras:

Get a bra fitting first

Did you know that bra fittings are typically free? It’s true! Most local lingerie boutiques offer bra fittings. Bras aren’t cheap – do yourself a favor and get a bra fitting before buying any new bras. A good bra fitter will determine your bra size, hand pick bras for you to try, and save you time bra shopping. No need to try on a bunch of different sizes and styles and hope for the best. She’ll do all of the shopping for you.

Shop the sales to save money

In addition to seasonal sales, many local lingerie boutiques offer loyalty programs, promotions, discounts, and sales throughout the year. This is the perfect time to stock up on your everyday bra and panty essentials. The reduced prices are also a great excuse to try new fashion colors that you wouldn’t normally buy. Who knew a red bra could be so versatile?

Buy two panties for every bra

Whether you’re buying a fancy bra and panty set or refreshing your lingerie drawer with some new basics, it’s always a good idea to buy two panties for every bra you buy. You can get away with wearing the same 2-3 bras each week, but the same panties? Not so much. A good rule of thumb is to buy more panties than bras, so you’ll never run out before laundry day.

Stick to a color palette

Do you prefer when your bras and panties match? Make it easy on yourself and stick to a color palette. If you wear a lot of black, an all black lingerie wardrobe makes sense. On the other hand, if you like pastels or neutrals, it’s easy to keep things within the same color family when you stick with similar hues. No matter which palette you choose, be sure to pick one that flatters your skin tone, hair color, and eye color.

Get to know the staff

Get to know the staff at your local lingerie boutique and you’ll never miss a sale, promotion, or product launch. You’ll be one of the first people they call when they receive a new bra or panty in a brand you like. If you prefer to shop for lingerie a few times a year, follow the store’s social media and sign up for the email newsletter instead. You’ll still receive updates and be able to pick a time that works for you to shop. Perfect!

You took the time to get a bra fitting and go bra shopping. Now you have a few new bras to wear each week. Whether you decide to wear them first and then wash them, or wash them before wear you them, how you care for your bras plays an important part in how long they’ll last.

You’ve probably heard that the better care you take of your bras, the longer they’ll last. This is true. Washing them in hot water and throwing them in the dryer are both quick ways to ruin your bras (and you don’t want that!)

Bras are a necessity for most lingerie wardrobes. We all deserve beautiful lingerie that fits well and helps our feel our best. Here’s how to keep your bras in tip-top shape:

How to wash bras

First, separate your bras from your other lingerie and clothes. Then, sort them into piles with like colors. Depending on how often you do your laundry, you should have a pile of light colors and a pile of dark colors.

Next, hook all of your bras and put them in mesh lingerie bags. This keeps them from snagging or catching on other bras in the wash. Sort your panties, babydolls, and sports bras into other mesh lingerie bags (they can all be washed together). Then, wash them on a short delicates cycle with cool water.

how to wash bras

How to dry bras

First things first, never ever put your bras in the dryer. The dryer is very hard on lingerie. The heat from the dryer can break down elastic, ruin the cups, and cause the fabric to stretch and be bent out of shape.

We recommend laying your lingerie flat to dry on a drying rack or table with the cups facing up. You could also hang your lingerie to dry with the center front of the bra draped over the hanger. Hanging your bra by the straps can cause the straps to stretch out. The center front of a bra is typically stabilized and made of minimal fabric, so hanging it by the center front is a better choice.

how to dry bras

How to store bras

If you’re storing your bras in a drawer, sort them by style. All molded bras should be lined up in a row with the cups facing forward. Unlined wire bras, bralettes, and wireless bras can be folded in half and stored on top of the next or laid flat and stored on top of each other.

Bras can also be hung up and stored in a closet on hangers. You can hang them by the straps or by the center front of the bra but laying them in a drawer is the best option.

So there you have it – how to wash, dry, and store your bras. As long as you’re rotating your bras (never wearing the same bra two days in a row), these tips can help your bras last as long as possible.

Thinking of opening your own lingerie store one day? Or maybe you just love lingerie and have always wondered what it would be like to work at a lingerie store. If this sounds like you, a job as a bra fitter could be the perfect fit.

Bra fitters play an important role in the bra shopping process. They do all of the bra fittings at the store. Their training in bra fitting, vast product knowledge, and ability to ask the right questions comes in handy when they’re doing bra fittings.

While it might seem like a walk in the park, there is more to a bra fitter’s job than meets the eye. Aside from helping women find bras that fit well and feel amazing, bra fitters wear many hats. It’s not uncommon for a bra fitter to fit and sell bras, clean and replenish the racks, write orders, clean the fitting rooms, call customers to tell them about new products, and hang more bras than you’d ever imagine – all in the same day. Plus, they’re constantly moving around and on their feet 8+ hours per day, which can be tiring at first. But, as exhausting as it may seem, bra fitters have an incredibly rewarding job. Most bra fitters love what they do and they get to do what they love. What could be better than that?

Wondering how to become a bra fitter? While there isn’t a specific path, here are some things that might help:

1.  Remember that you don’t need prior experience

You don’t need to have any lingerie industry experience in order to apply for a bra fitting job. This is because bra fitters are trained on-site. Don’t let your lack of experience stop you from applying if you feel like you’d be happy working at a lingerie store. Empathy, kindness, self-motivation, and a strong work ethic are some of the qualities they’re looking for in potential candidates.

2.  Visit your local lingerie store

Looking for a job as a bra fitter? Head to your local lingerie store first and ask if they’re hiring. Many small businesses don’t post their job openings online. Before you do, research the store online to see what the store is like. Then, on the day you’re visiting, dress nice (business casual), bring a copy of your resume with you, and ask to speak with the manager. Let her know that you’re looking for a job and would love to work for his/her store. If you have previous retail experience, don’t forget to mention it. If not, that’s ok too. Focus on why you’d be an asset to her team. Most lingerie stores need extra help around the holiday season, so now is a great time to start if you’re looking for a part-time or seasonal job that could turn into something more.

3.  Take your job search online

There are plenty of stores that do advertise job openings online. Some list the job as a ‘Lingerie Sales Associate’, ‘Seasonal Lingerie Sales Associate’, ‘Bra Fit Specialist’, ‘Bra Fitting Expert’, ‘Bra Fitter’, etc., but the postings can vary. Indeed, Monster, and Simply Hired are all great places to search. Try typing ‘Lingerie’ and your zip code into one of those sites to find a lingerie-related job near you.

4.  Broaden your search

Stores like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue also offer bra fittings at their stores. Their staff is hired as lingerie sales associates and then they go through bra fitting training. Keep in mind that one of the biggest differences between working at a department store and working at a local lingerie boutique is the pay structure. Department stores typically utilize a commission-based system (meaning you get paid a percentage of how much you sell minus your returns) while local lingerie stores typically pay per hour. This is important to keep in mind while you’re doing your search.

A bra fitter’s take

If you’ve made it this far, congrats! Bra fitting might just be the thing for you. Personally, I absolutely love being a bra fitter. I get to solve bra fit problems, share my knowledge with my customers, and be surrounded by beautiful lingerie all day long. It’s a perfect match.

I would recommend applying for a bra fitting job if it sounds like something you might like. I’ve worked in a few different departments and I can honestly say that working in lingerie is much more intimate than any other department. As such, it’s not for everyone. Customers want someone that is caring, kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. In the fitting room, you’re the expert. The store is your domain. You’re in charge of determining your customer’s bra size and helping them find bras that fit. You don’t need to know everything about bras or breast shapes to be a good bra fitter, but you do need to have a willingness to learn and empathy for the people you help. I wouldn’t say that the job is easy (you’ll definitely have days in the beginning where you have no idea what to do), but it is incredibly rewarding and definitely worth it.

Shopping for new bras? You’ve come to the right place. Today, plus size customers have more lingerie options than ever. Now, you can find beautiful bras at your local lingerie boutique in sizes that include 38-54+ bands and A-K+ cup sizes. With lingerie brands focused on designing inclusive lingerie, women of all sizes are finally able to experience just how amazing finding the right fit is.

If you’ve struggled with bra shopping before, you’re not alone. To make it a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of our top tips for finding the best plus size bras.

Read on for everything you need to know:

1.  Shop your local lingerie store

You’re not alone if you have a hard time finding your size at stores like Victoria’s Secret. For an even better option, check out your local lingerie boutique as it’s a great alternative to Victoria’s Secret. You can expect the same prices for bras (typically $30-$60+), but the service at a local lingerie boutique is stellar and the bra fitters all go through extensive bra fit training.

Plus, you won’t have to worry about your size not being available. Local lingerie boutiques stock anywhere from an A cup to a K cup, with some brands going up to an L or M cup. The band sizes are also inclusive, with bras available in anywhere from a 26 band to a 46 band and beyond.

2.  Get a bra fitting

Bra fittings are an essential part of bra shopping. During a bra fitting, a professional bra fitter determines your bra size and selects bras that she believes will fit your bust best. Bra fitters typically take two measurements during a bra fitting – your underbust measurement and your overbust measurement. The underbust measurement is key for determining your band size and the difference of the two is key for determining your cup size.

In the past, bra fitters would add 4 or 5 to the underbust measurement to get the band size. Unfortunately, this often results in a bra with a band that is too big.

Now, many bra fitters use a +0 method, meaning they don’t add anything to your underbust measurement. So if you measure 36 inches under your bust, you’ll wear a 36 inch band. Plus size customers often follow the +0 method when bra shopping because it results in a snug and supportive bra band. But, remember: the number is more of a guide than a set rule. If you find that a 36 inch band feels uncomfortably snug, but the cup feels just right, opt for your bra sister size (go up in the band size and down in the cup size) instead.

3.  Bring a few bras with you into the fitting room

Bra sizing is tricky. You may have to try on a 2-3 sizes in a style in order to get the best fit. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while to find a bra that fits. But do make note of the brand and the style that looks amazing on. Every brand sizes their bras differently – this brand might become your new go-to.

4.  Get to know your favorite lingerie brand

Once you find a lingerie brand you love, check out their social media. You could also follow them on social media so you’re always in the know. You’ll be the first to find out about new colors, new styles, sales, and promotions. If you’re a savvy shopper and want to take it a step further, find a local stockist and get to know the staff. They’ll call you when new products come in and keep you updated on sales and discounts. Many will also even pull the items for you so you can shop at your convenience. Perfect!
