Are you looking for a swimsuit top that is as supportive as your favorite bra? A bra-sized swimsuit top or one-piece swimsuit might be just what you need. Bra-sized swimwear is sized according to your bra band and cup size – it’s not like the S, M, and L swimsuits you see in most clothing stores.

Plus, bra-sized swimwear has the supportive construction that full busts and plus size busts need. The additional design details (underwire for breast separation, boning on the band to keep the top from rolling up, a hook and eye closure or a sturdy hook closure that keeps the band in place) aim to support large cup sizes while still looking like swimwear. If you wear a D, DD, or DDD cup or larger, bra-sized swimwear is your best bet for a supportive fit that won’t let you down.

Bra-sized swimwear can be challenging to get right. Wondering how to get the perfect fit? Read on for our top tips!

1.  Get a bra fitting first

A bra fitting is key to finding the right bra-sized swimsuit top, so do yourself a favor and get a bra fitting first. You might be wondering how a bra fitting can help with swimsuit shopping. Here’s how: When you’re shopping for swimsuit tops with bra sizing, you’ll need to know your band size and cup size. Bra fitters know how to fit for bra sized swimwear. A fitting will help determine what your bra size is and which bra styles suit your breast shape best.

2.  Try on different styles

Bra-sized swimsuit tops can be found in demi, halter, strapless, and full coverage styles, among others. If you want to make shopping for a new swimsuit even easier, figure out your bra size and breast shape first. Your breast shape will help determine which swimsuit tops will fit you best. Then, try on a bunch of different swimsuit top and bottom styles. The beauty of a bra-sized swimsuit is that the bottoms are typically sold separately instead of as a set. This means that you can purchase different sizes for the top and bottom – making it easier than ever to get a custom-fit swimsuit that you’ll wear for years.

3.  Shop in store so you can try everything on

Shopping for swimwear in store has a few perks. At a local boutique, you can get help from a lingerie and swimwear fit expert and also try on swimsuits before making a purchase. Lingerie experts also know the fit of each brand. This can save you from trying on sizes that won’t work out in the fitting room.

4.  Only buy online if you’re familiar with the brand

Who doesn’t love online shopping? But if this is your first-time buying bra-sized swimwear, you might want to shop in store instead. We recommend only buying online if you’re already familiar with the brand. If you buy your bras regularly from this brand and love the way that they fit, go ahead and order online with confidence.

5.  Know how to care for your swimsuits

Bra-sized swimwear is an investment. You’ve spent time shopping for the perfect swimsuit – now it’s time to wash it. Remember: Your bra-sized swimwear will last longer if you care for it properly. To avoid damaging your swimsuits in the wash, be sure to wash in cool water with a gentle detergent and always hang your swimsuits to try. Also, be sure to avoid hanging them outside as the sun can discolor and fade swimsuits over time.

Where can I buy swimwear by bra size?

Your local lingerie store is a great place to shop for new bras and swimwear. You could also try department stores like Nordstrom, Hudson’s Bay, and Lord & Taylor for a superb selection of swimwear by bra size. For a list of local stores, check out our stockist list here.

Do you wear a bra to bed? Some women feel comfortable wearing a bra to sleep, while others wouldn’t dream of sleeping with a bra on.

It might seem like a terrible idea to keep your bra on but wearing a bra to bed does have its perks. Read on for the pros and cons of sleeping with a bra on.

Pros

1.  Provides lightweight support

If you’re choosing to wear a bra to bed, it’s best to look for a bralette that is lightweight and constructed in a soft, stretchy fabric. Bralettes provide comfortable support and can be worn as sleeping bras and lounging bras. We love the Serene Unlined Triangle Bra in Ivory, Sea, or Black – it’s so comfortable you won’t want to take it off!

2.  Keeps your breasts in place

A good bralette will keep your breasts feeling supported and in place during the full eight hours. Be sure not to choose anything too restrictive as you want to focus on comfort first. Also, avoid anything with a lot of seams, cut-outs, and straps. Minimal, simple designs with comfortable fabrics are key here.

3.  Can provide comfort for sore breasts

Bralettes can provide comfort for sore, tender breasts. They’re great for wearing while you’re on period or for when you want the freedom of a wireless bra. Of course, bralettes aren’t miracle workers – they won’t relieve the pain completely – but they may help a little.

Cons

1.  Bras with underwire can cause discomfort

We wouldn’t recommend wearing a bra with underwire to bed. The underwire may dig into your skin as the bra moves while when you’re tossing and turning in your sleep. Underwire bras can also be made of sturdier, supportive fabrics (like power mesh, for example) that provide more support than you might need at night.

2.  Ill-fitting bras can do more harm than good

Bras that are too small or too big may cause more pain than anything else. You could experience skin irritation, soreness, and bruising, among other concerns if you wear a bra that doesn’t fit to bed. Instead of a wearing a bra that doesn’t fit, you could try going braless instead.

3.  You’ll have to try on a bunch of bras before you find the right one.

It can be challenging to find a comfortable bra that you’ll actually want to wear to bed. You might need to try on a few bras before you find a good one. We recommend visiting a local lingerie store for a fitting and help with finding a comfortable bra for bed (if you decide that you want to wear one). The bra fitters at your local lingerie boutique will ensure that you’re wearing the right size and make suggestions on the styles and fabrics that are best for sleeping bras.

Remember

These might not apply if you’ve recently had a breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery. It’s best to consult your doctor because they’ll have suggestions for what you should wear while you’re healing and after you’re done healing. Also, be sure to talk with your doctor before you start wearing a bra to bed.

Ever wonder why your bra size changes from brand to brand or style to style? Here’s the reason: Your bra size is more of a guide than a set rule. It gives you an idea of what size you should start with in the fitting room, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily be taking that size home with you.

We know how complex bra sizing is and how hard it can be to understand. In fact, it involves factors that you might not even be considering when bra shopping, which is why we always recommend getting regular bra fittings and visiting your local lingerie boutique for help. But there’s a chance you’re reading this article because you’re genuinely curious about the world of bra sizing and you’re having trouble making sense of it all. Don’t worry, this article was written for you.

In this guide, we’ll be talking about the basics of bra sizing – how to determine your bra size, how to read your bra size tag, and how to figure out your bra sister size.

Ready to begin? Great! In order to understand how bra sizes work, we must first understand what is needed to determine a bra size.

How to determine a bra size

Your bra size is a combination of a few factors: your underbust measurement, overbust measurement, breast shape, breast root width, and your personal fit preferences, among others. All of these are taken into consideration when determining which bra size will work best for you in any bra you try on. A good bra fitter won’t try to sell you a bra if you feel it’s uncomfortable or too snug. Instead, she’ll consider your personal fit preferences and look for the styles and brands that are comfortable and fit you well.

The underbust and overbust measurements are the two most common measurements taken during a bra fitting. Your underbust measurement is taken below your bust with the tape measure parallel to the floor. Your overbust measurement is taken at the fullest part of the bust, also with the tape measure wrapped around the bust and parallel to the floor. If you’re measuring your bra size at home, these measurements should be taken in front of a mirror so you can make sure everything is lining up properly. For more on what a proper fitting bra looks like, check out our guide here.

How to read a bra size tag

When it comes to bra sizes, the number on the tag is the bra’s band size and the letter on the tag is the bra’s cup size. That being said, the band size is not necessarily your underbust measurement. For example, you might measure 32 inches under your bust, but you may wear a 34 inch bra band. On the other hand, some women prefer a snug band, so they opt for a bra where their underbust measurement and band size is the same number.

What is bra sister sizing?

Bra sister sizing involves finding two alternate bra sizes – one with a band size bigger than yours and the other with a band size smaller than yours. When calculated correctly, you’ll find that your bra sister size has relatively the same cup volume as your current size, but a different band size.

For example, the bra sister sizes for a 34D are 36C and 32DD. The bra sister sizes for a 36DD are 38D and 34DDD/E.

You might buy your bra sister size if you fall in love with a bra that doesn’t come in your regular size or if you don’t like the fit of the band in your regular size.

How to determine your bra sister size

Using our chart here, find your bra size on the bra size chart. Now look for the bra size that is one band size bigger and one cup size smaller than your bra size – this is your bra sister size with a bigger band. Then, starting from the beginning, look for your bra size with one band size smaller and one cup size bigger – this is your bra sister with a smaller band size.

You’ll find that if you wear a 40DD, your bra sister sizes are 38DDD/E and 42D. Anyone who wears a 32C, will find their bra sister sizes in a 34B and 36A.

Don’t have time to convert your bra size to your bra sister size? We’re got you covered. For a quick and easy way to figure out bra sister size (no math required!), check out our helpful bra size chart here.

Do you know the difference between a t-shirt bra and a bralette? What about the difference between a t-shirt bra and an unlined bra? The language of lingerie can be tricky, but we’re here to make it a little easier.

So how do you know if you need a t-shirt bra, bralette, or an unlined bra for your outfit? Read on for the differences between these three popular bra styles.

What is a t-shirt bra?

T-shirt bras are typically bras with molded, contour cups with underwire, adjustable shoulder straps, and a plain, supportive band. This bra style is designed more for function and comfort than beauty. They may or may not have lace trim along the cups or band. The purpose of a t-shirt bra is to provide undetectable support under clothing (similar to a seamless panty or thong).

T-shirt bras may have moderate (demi t-shirt bra, balconette t-shirt bra) to full coverage. T-shirt bras can also be constructed with push-up padding or without push-up padding and are often constructed with fabrics such as microfiber and modal for smoothness and comfort. Many women choose them as their go-to bra because they like the smooth, moulded look and rounded shape that they provide under clothing.

What is a bralette?

Bralettes are typically wireless or wirefree bras with supportive bands and beautiful details. With their lightly supportive fit and less restrictive shape, bralettes can be made of almost any fabric – including lace, mesh, cotton, and modal. Bralettes were once seen as a fad, but have quickly been a staple in most women’s’ lingerie wardrobes in just a few short years. Their popularity is further enhanced by their versatility and overall prettiness, which lends a delicate and feminine look to any outfit.

Bralettes may or may not be lined, so some women choose to wear a bra underneath for coverage, shaping, and lift (which is entirely up to you). But most women embrace the beautiful, natural shape that a bralette provides and prefer the freedom of a bra without wires to one with.

What is an unlined bra?

Unlined bras are typically non-molded bras with supportive bands and adjustable straps. Contrary to their name, most unlined bras have lined cups, even it’s a thin lining for comfort (like with lingerie mesh, for example). Unlined bras include bras with multi-part cups and those without. Unlined bras are just as supportive as t-shirt bras. They are a popular lightweight yet high-supportive choice for women who wear a D cup or larger as they won’t add any bulk or make their breasts look larger under clothing. Some unlined bras can be worn under a t-shirt, provided they’re constructed with smooth, seamless cups.

T-shirt bra vs bralette

What’s the difference between a t-shirt bra and a bralette? Bralettes look stunning when worn under slouchy sweaters, loose-fitting tops, or as outerwear under a chic blazer or cute cardigan, while t-shirt bras shine under fitted shirts, body-skimming tops, and bodycon dresses. Opt for a t-shirt bra when you don’t want your bra to be on display. Bralettes give you more leeway to play around with the design as they often feature beautiful design details that are too pretty to be kept hidden (like intricate straps, for example).

T-shirt bra vs unlined bra

What’s the difference between a t-shirt bra and an unlined bra? An unlined bra typically enhances more of a natural shape, while a t-shirt bra “molds” breast tissue into a symmetrical, rounded shape. The cups of a t-shirt bra can be thin (seen in a spacer bra) or thick (as in a fabric-covered foam cup), but both can provide coverage and prevent nipples from showing through clothing.

There’s something magical about shopping at the start of a new season. While you’re looking for new pieces to freshen up your outfits, why not refresh your lingerie drawer too? Chances are you haven’t given it much thought since the first of the year (who else starts the new year off right with new bras?), so it’s probably time to give it more than just a once-over.

First on the list: Bras. Here are five bras you should get rid of ASAP:

1.  Bras that don’t fit

First things first, give yourself 15-20 minutes to clear out the bras that don’t fit. Why 15-20 minutes? Depending on how many bras you have, you’ll need time to try everything on before deciding if you want to keep, toss, or donate it. Be sure to try everything on in front of a mirror so you can check the fit and follow our guide here if you need a reminder on what a proper fitting bra looks like.

2.  Bras that are torn or stretched out

If a bra can’t be fixed, it’s time to throw it out. Bras with wrinkled cups, torn straps, broken hooks, and bent underwires all fall into this category. Why hold onto things that are no longer serving a useful purpose? You know you’re not going to wear a broken bra, so make get dressed a little easier and get rid of it!

Related: Should You Get Rid Of Your Old Bras Or Fix Them?

3.  Bras that you’ll never wear again

There are some pieces that are worth keeping – like a luxurious bra and panty set or lingerie you wore for a special occasion. But we’re talking about the nursing bras you bought two years ago and the bralettes you still have but never actually wore two bra sizes ago. These are the bras that once served a purpose in your lingerie wardrobe but are no longer a part of your regular bra rotation. So unless you’re keeping them for sentimental reasons, it might be a good time to toss or donate.

4.  Bras that make you feel bad about your body

Are you wearing bras that do your figure a disservice? You deserve better. Lingerie isn’t designed to make you feel bad about your body. In fact, it’s just the opposite. You should feel comfortable, empowered, and supported in your lingerie. If your bras (and panties) are riding up, digging in, and creating unflattering lines under your clothes, do yourself a favor and throw them away and find better options.

5.  Bras that you’ve had since high school

Are you holding onto bras that you’ve had since high school? It’s time to let them go. Don’t be surprised if your bra size has changed since you were a teenager. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain, weight loss, hormones, and menopause can all affect breast size. It’s not uncommon to wear different bra sizes throughout your life. Don’t be afraid to get rid of bras that you no longer wear – it’s actually quite cathartic! Remind yourself that you’re making room for beautiful, new pieces that you’ll look forward to wearing. We can’t think of anything better than that!

In case you haven’t heard, bralettes are here to stay. Once seen as a trend, bralettes have evolved over the years in sizing and variety to earn a more permanent place in our lingerie wardrobes. Gone are the days when you could only find bralettes in XS, S, M, and L sizes. Now you can shop for bralettes based on your cup and band size – making it easier than ever to get the perfect fit. Take our Adriana Lace Bralette, for example. This sexy, lacy bralette is available in bra sizes up to a G cup. Remember when you couldn’t find a supportive bralette in that cup size just a few years ago?

With more and more women asking for bralettes in larger cup sizes, beautiful bralettes like the Adriana Lace Bralette and Dalis Bralette exist today. Aside from their supportive fit and pretty details, we love how comfortable the AdrianaDalis, and Ciara bralettes are and how easy they are to style and wear. Plus, they’re perfect for those moments when you want to wear a bra but don’t want anything with underwire (like when you’re running errands or lounging around at home).

We get a lot of questions about how to wear, care for, and style bralettes, so we’re taking a moment to answer them today. Read on for the answers to your most popular bralette questions.

What Is A Bralette?

A bralette is a lightweight bra without underwire. Beyond that, bralettes vary wildly. Bralettes are typically constructed with stretch fabrics. They can be made of lace, mesh, modal, and spandex, among many others. They may fasten in the front or back with a zipper, button, or hook and eye closure. The bra band may or may not be lined with lingerie mesh or sturdier power mesh. The most supportive bralettes have a power mesh-lined bra band, bra cups with strategic seaming, and a back hook and eye closure.

How To Wear A Bralette

Wondering how to wear a bralette? Bralettes are designed to be shown off, so don’t be afraid to wear your favorite bralette on its own or under a lacy top. In the winter, bralettes work perfectly under slouchy sweaters and sheer buttoned-up shirts. We love the extra coverage and opacity a bralette provides when its worn as a layer under a favorite winter outfit. Bralettes have the power to elevate any look. A fancy bralette can make even the most mundane work outfit more exciting!

Where To Buy Bralettes

Curious where to buy bralettes? The best place to buy bralettes is right around the corner – at your local lingerie boutique, of course! Local lingerie stores are great for finding beautiful bralettes in bra cup sizes. If you wear a D cup, DD cup, or larger, lingerie boutiques have you covered. They carry a wide selection of bras in hard to find sizes, like 30D, 36G, and 40DD, so they’re the perfect place to find a well-fitting bralette.

Do You Wear A Bra Under A Bralette?

It’s up to you! Most bralettes are designed to be worn without a bra underneath, but you may decide to wear a bra under if you prefer a more rounded shape or enhanced cleavage. Bralettes aren’t designed to boost cleavage or lift breast tissue a significant amount. Instead, they’re designed to provide minimal to moderate coverage depending on the style and light lift without underwire.

So, there you have it – a quick guide to bralettes, one of the lingerie industry’s most popular undergarments?

Nervous about your bra fitting? Don’t be! Bra fittings are an important part of lingerie shopping. In a bra fitting, a professional bra fitter determines your bra size and brings you bras to try on based on your bra size, breast shape, and a few other factors. This is the perfect time for you to tell her if you have any complaints about your current bras or if you’re experiencing any fit issues (cups gaping, band riding up your back, straps falling off your shoulders, etc.) Her goal is to help you find bras that fit well, feel good, and work within your budget.

Whether you’re preparing for your first bra fitting or your fifteenth, here are four things bra fitters want you to know:

1.  You don’t have to take your bra off

If your bra fitter uses a tape measure during your fitting, she’ll likely take your overbust measurement (measured horizontally at the fullest part of the bust) over your current bra. You won’t need to take your bra off. Bra fitters want you to be comfortable during the fitting – they’ll respect your personal space and privacy. Depending on which you prefer, the bra fitter can stay with you in the fitting room or wait outside while you’re trying on bras. If you’re comfortable with it, you can also ask her to “check the fit” of each bra – meaning she’ll step into the fitting room with you and assess the fit of each bra to make sure it’s fitting you properly.

2.  Walk-ins are welcome

At most lingerie boutiques, you don’t have to make an appointment for a bra fitting. You can simply visit the store during opening hours and they’ll be happy to fit you and help you shop for new bras. Do keep in mind that if you’re visiting on the weekend or during the holiday season, there may be a longer wait for a bra fitting. And if you think you might need more than 30 minutes to get fitted and shop, it might be a good idea to make an appointment or call ahead that day and let the staff know what you need and when you’ll be in. Also, don’t forget to bring your special occasion dress with you if you’re shopping for undergarments for it or a favorite t-shirt if you’re shopping for everyday bras so you can see if the bras will show under your shirts.

3.  Bra fittings are typically free

Most lingerie boutiques provide bra fittings for free. While there are some stores that charge for the fitting, they typically let you apply the charge to a purchase in the store.

Why would a lingerie store offer a bra fitting for free? This is one big reason: Lingerie stores want you to buy bras in the right size and be so happy with them that you won’t need to return them. Think of it this way: How many times have you bought something while shopping on your own and then returned it later because it ended up being the wrong size? Bra fittings help lingerie stores get the sizing right the first time – which saves you time and money because you won’t have to make a return trip.

4.  Lingerie stores are judgment-free zones

Don’t worry about doing your hair or putting on a cute outfit to go bra shopping – lingerie stores are judgment-free zones. It doesn’t matter if your hair is a mess or your shirt has stains on it or you’ve gained ten pounds since your last fitting. Bra fitters have seen it all and they’re not there to judge. They’re focused on helping you find bras that make you feel amazing – they’re not judging your body, or your outfit, or your beautiful makeup-free face.

Feeling more prepared for your next bra fitting? Great! Before you go, be sure to check out the helpful resources below. They’ll likely answer any questions you have left.

Getting a bra that fits perfectly can be tricky. Don’t worry – we’re here to help. You’ve probably heard that when you find the right bra, you’ll feel comfortable, supported, and confident. Which sounds amazing, but how is a bra supposed to fit?

If you’re struggling with finding a good bra or you want to check the fit on the bras you already have, here’s what to look for. We’re breaking down each bra part in our guide below. Read on for everything you need to know!

The band

First things first, let’s check the band. Once you’ve hooked the bra and slid your arms into the straps, take a good look at your bra band in the mirror. The bra band should be parallel to the floor and even all the way around your chest and back. Make sure the band isn’t riding up in the back (a sure sign of an ill-fitting bra). If it’s a new bra, it should be fastened on the loosest hook (the one closest to the end). Older bras may be fastened on the middle or tightest (innermost) hook.

Next, check the tightness of the band. Can you fit two fingers between your skin and the band? If you can fit three fingers or more between your skin and the band, the band is too big. Try hooking it on a tighter hook for a more supportive fit. If you’re already on the tightest hook, you either need a smaller band size and/or a new bra.

The cups

After you’ve checked the fit of the band, turn your attention to the cups. First, do the scoop and swoop – this will scoop all of your tissue toward the center of the cups so they’re filled. Ideally, your breast tissue should fill the bra’s cups completely. There shouldn’t be any gaping (empty space in the cups) or spillage over the sides, bottom, or top. Also, check where the underwire is sitting. You don’t want the underwire to rest on top of your breast tissue. Instead, your breast tissue should be completely enclosed within the underwire.

Try this: Raise your arms up into the air like you’re stretching. Did your bra move significantly? Ideally, your bra band should stay in place and your cups should keep all of your breast tissue contained. Also, your straps should stay put on your shoulders.

The straps

If the band provides 85% of the bra’s support, that leaves only 15% for the rest of the bra. So if you’re relying on your straps for support, you’re doing yourself a disservice. It’s a common misconception to think that your straps are doing the heavy lifting – it’s actually your band that is providing most of the support. Instead of overtightening your straps, focus on leaving just enough room between your skin and the straps (ideally you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between your skin and the strap) so the straps are tight enough to stay securely on your shoulders without feeling uncomfortable or leaving a mark.

Fit wise, you might want to try a band size smaller to get a snug fit so you’re not overtightening the straps. Also, if your straps frequently fall off your shoulders and tightening the straps doesn’t fix the problem, you might need a different style. A racerback bra or bra with inset straps could be just what you need. Avoid bras with wide-set straps, like balconette bra and demi bra styles as they can easily fall off of narrow shoulders.
