body positivity quotes

Tis the season to be jolly! Now that the festivities are well and truly underway, there may be one small thing on your mind. Body positivity is a year-round mission and it shouldn’t stop simply because there’s a massive holiday around the corner.

If you want to stick to your #BoPo goals this season, here are six tips that you can use for yourself:

1.  Stay as active as possible

Let’s be honest, the holidays are not the most active period. While you may be moving around the country to see your loved ones regularly, the chances are that your downtime is pretty sedentary. With that in mind, you may want to switch things up. Be as active as possible during this period. Whether it’s heading out for a Christmas Eve walk or going out dancing with your friends, there are many ways to get in some physical exercise.

2.  Don’t deny yourself festive treats

Festive food is naughty and tastes nice. We all know it – there’s not much that we can do about it. While you want to be as healthy as possible, denying yourself all festive treats is like setting yourself up for failure. It won’t work. Instead, you need to make sure that you have the things you love now and then. You don’t have to eat all of the treats on the table (unless you want to… in which case, go ahead!), but have a few choice snacks.

3.  Avoid negative body talk

While the festivities are on, there’s one negative thing that you will hear time and time again. People – whether it’s your family members or friends – will complain that they’ve eaten too much or say that they need to go on a diet. This is just the type of talk that you need to avoid at all costs. It’s contagious. Should you find people engaging in this type of negativity, you need to exit the conversation as soon as possible.

4.  Turn to your friends for support

Feeling stressed out over the holidays? It can be a hard period for the strongest of us. When you’re visiting family that you haven’t seen the rest of the year and socializing with people that you don’t know that well, it can be seriously difficult to feel confident. We’ve all been there. Rather than allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by all of the above, there’s one simple thing you can do which will be a massive help. Turn to your closest friends for love and support whether it’s a quick text or phone call, it will make a difference.

5.  Hydrate as much as possible

Next, let’s take a moment to consider your health. You need to look after your body as best you can during this period. Over the holidays, people tend to drink too much alcohol. If you’re guilty of this festive sin, you should try to curb it a little. You could also make sure that you hydrate as much as possible each and every day. Carry a bottle of water around with you and make sure that you keep topping up when possible.

6.  Share compliments with people

When you see someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while, make the effort to reach out to them and compliment them on something. Avoid solely complimenting people on the way that they look. You don’t need all of the focus to be on aesthetics. Instead, find out what people have been doing over the last year and compliment them on their wins and achievements. Let people know that they are more than their body. Let them know that it simply does not define them.

7.  Avoid obsessing about weight

Are you caught up in a negative thought-pattern? If the answer is yes, you need to change your ways sooner rather than later. When you start to obsess about your weight, it can become seriously unhealthy. You can quickly spiral and start feeling worse and worse about yourself. Don’t allow that to happen. Focus on things – like your family and the celebrations – that are not at all related to your weight. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
