how should a bra fit

Bras are notoriously difficult to shop for. Between the sizing (like US vs UK bra sizing), the different styles (demi bras vs contour bras), and the many different brands, it’s understandable if you’ve ever felt a little lost. So how do find bras that fit when you’re not sure where to go or what to buy? A bra fitting at a local lingerie boutique is the best place to start. Bra fittings are the first step to finding beautiful, supportive bras. During a bra fitting, a bra fitter will determine your bra size and pick out bras for you to try on based on your bra size, breast shape, budget, and comfort and style preferences.

From there, you’ll try on a few bras to see what feels best. Your bra fitter will also tell you how to care for your new bras and remind you to rotate between your bras so you don’t wear the same one two days in a row.

Remember: The bra fitter will be checking the fit, but she can only go off what she sees. Let her know if the bra feels too snug or the material feels scratchy. Communication is the key to a great bra fitting.

Wondering what it’s like to have a bra that fits perfectly? Here’s what to look for (in the fitting room and out):

The straps stay on your shoulders

Tired of your bra straps falling off your shoulders? This is a common bra fitting problem. In many cases, loose straps can be traced back to an ill-fitting bra. For the best fit, you should be able to fit two fingers between your skin and the strap without the band riding up. If the straps are too tight, the bra band could ride up your back and compromise the fit of the bra. If the straps are too loose, you run the risk of them falling off your shoulders.

The band stays in place

You’ve probably heard that the bra band provides 80-85% of a bra’s support. In a perfect-fitting bra, the bra band should stay in place. You’ll never have to worry about the bra band moving throughout the day and, as a result, your breast tissue feels completely supported, lifted, and under control.

You’ll forget you’re wearing a bra

A bra should never cause pain or discomfort. If your bra feels painful, you’re likely wearing the wrong bra size. On the other hand, it could be the style that isn’t working for you. For example, you may need a wireless bra or a bra with narrower wire channels to get the best fit. A great bra strikes the perfect balance between support and comfort – you might even forget you’re wearing one.

You’re happy with the style and fit

Do you hate putting on a bra in the morning? If so, it’s time to find a new one. When you find the right bra, you’ll like the style and fit (and maybe you’ll buy two so you have a backup!)

If you’re struggling with finding a bra that fits well and feeling amazing, we recommend visiting a local lingerie boutique for help. The bra fitters there will take great care of you and help you find cute bras that provide plenty of support. Perfect!
