Don’t get us wrong: We love underwire. In fact, there are many occasions on which we wonder what we’d do without that structuring little feature. Still, there are times when, for whatever reason, we may want to ditch the wire altogether. Maybe we’re just planning on lounging around the house on a lazy Sunday, maybe our breasts are tender or sensitive from breastfeeding, or maybe we just like to have the option to give our bust a break. Regardless of the reason, soft-cup bras are the answer. So, what are soft cup bras? And are they right for you?

This guide should answer all your questions about this increasingly popular style — so let’s get right to it, shall we?

What are soft cup bras?

On a basic level, a soft cup bra simply refers to a bra that doesn’t have any underwire. These bras may have a number of other features to compensate for the lack of wire and lend extra support, such as wider straps, a thicker band, multi-part cups, and inner slings.

Who are soft cup bras designed for?

Let’s clear one thing up straight away: soft cup bras are not for small-breasted women only. As previously mentioned, this style has come a long way in recent years, and can still lend sufficient support with the right cut and set of features (as well as a flawless fit, of course). Soft cup bras are a solid option for women who simply want a comfy style for low-key days, as well as for women who are pregnant or nursing and want to forgo underwire during those phases.

When to wear soft cup bras:

Guess what? Soft cup bras encompass a range of different styles — whether you’re seeking a T-shirt bra, front-closing bra, or full-coverage sports bra. As such, you can surely find a soft cup bra for every occasion, whether it’s a sexy longline style for date night or a lightweight lacy bralette for long strolls in sweltering summer months. A wire-free soft padded bra with a plunge shape is bound to come in handy for those dresses and tops with a super low neckline.

So when should you wear soft-cup bras? Anytime, depending on the style. You’ll surely appreciate a wire-free option for casually running errands, relaxing or doing some chores around the house, or engaging in a form of low-impact exercise like yoga or Pilates. They also offer a perfect compromise for those who prefer to sleep in a bra but don’t want to wear underwire to bed.

What features to look for in a soft cup bra:

We’ve got some phenomenal news for all the large-busted women out there: Bras can still be supportive sans underwire — as long as they’re expertly constructed and made with high-quality materials.

For example, a wire-free soft padded bra lends impressive coverage and shaping, and it’s super versatile in a neutral hue like basic bare. Adjustable shoulder straps and a hook-and-eye closure with several rows of hooks are key for getting a perfect fit. Better yet, detachable straps mean you can wear the bra different ways.

So, let’s review. Soft cup bras are just another term for wire-free bras — they’re an ideal choice for anyone who’s seeking a natural shape and prioritizing comfort, and they are available in a myriad of styles depending on your preferences. If you’re thinking about adding one to your collection (and we’re fully behind this decision), just make sure you’re 100 percent certain of your size — fit is particularly crucial when a bra lacks underwire, or you could end up compromising support.

It goes without saying that nursing bras are a must for any new mother. The majority of these specialized undergarments feature cups that open so you’re able to breastfeed more conveniently. It’s imperative that these bras are comfortable, of course, but also that they are sufficiently supportive — and that especially applies if you’re well-endowed. That’s because due to the milk (as well as some hormonal changes) your breasts are often heavier than usual when you begin nursing.

Finding plus-size nursing bras may feel like a challenge, but the truth is, there are plenty of online stores as well as brick-and-mortar boutiques that carry them. And fortunately, we’ve rounded up our top picks for finding nursing bras in both larger band and cup sizes. Because curvaceous bodies deserve to be comfortable while breastfeeding, too.

Local lingerie stores

Looking for new nursing bras? Look no further than your local lingerie boutiques. Your local lingerie stores are well-stocked with nursing bras for new mothers. Their knowledgeable bra fitters will help make sure you’re wearing the right size nursing bra, ensuring optimal comfort and support.

Kohl’s

This department store has a solid selection of plus-size nursing bras. You can search by size, price, and color, but also by other aspects such as the material or customer rating. Additionally, Kohl’s allows you to sort the selection by a specific feature you’re seeking, such as convertible, side-smoothing, underwire, or moisture-wicking.

Nordstrom

Fun fact: Did you know that Nordstrom will convert any bra you own into a nursing bra? All you have to do is pay a small fee of $10 (alteration fees may vary; this is the cost at our local store). This special service enables you to continue wearing your favorite bras while breastfeeding. It’s particularly beneficial for plus-sized women, who may have a harder time finding bras that meet all their needs to begin with. Not to mention, Nordstrom happens to provide expert bra fittings on-site, so while you’re dropping off your bra for alteration, you can get re-measured to make sure you’re wearing the right size.

Happy bra shopping!

This one’s for all the full-busted women: Because let’s face it, bra shopping is no easy feat. I should know — as a DDD cup, there was a time when instead of looking forward to a shopping trip, I dreaded having to pick out some new unmentionables. That, of course, was before I knew which styles worked for me. Because the fact of the matter is that particular types of bras work better for different cup sizes.

If your cup size lies somewhere between D and K, you have certain needs your bra must meet. Here are some of the top styles you can choose for looking — and feeling — your absolute best.

Contour bra

what is a contour bra

The cups on this style contain a thicker lining (meaning maximum nipple coverage) and maintain their molded shape even when you’re not wearing the bra. Therefore, contour bras offer a clean line under any ensemble. The right molded cup bra not only lifts the bust but lends supreme shaping and sculpting benefits as well, making your bust look as symmetrical as possible.

Minimizer bra

When you’re seeking the appearance of a smaller bust under a particular pieces of clothing (such as a button-down shirt), reach for this style. By lifting and redistributing the breast tissue more evenly across your chest, minimizer bras can potentially take 1 to 1.5 inches or more off your bust line.

 T-shirt bra

This bra style is designed to provide a smooth line underneath — you guessed it — T-shirts (and other form-fitting knit tops), making it an everyday favorite for obvious reasons. T-shirt bras feature seamless molded cups as well as underwire, resulting in a nicely rounded shape.

Unlined wire bra

While this style can vary a bit from demi-cup to full-cup, regardless, it’s a phenomenal pick for those who value support but prefer not to have any padding. Lightweight and comfy, the unlined wire bra offers excellent lift and a natural shape.

Full cup bra

best full cup bra

You can’t beat this bra style in regards to coverage. As the name suggests, full cup bras feature cups that contain your full breasts. Full cup bras may or may not be lined, but either way can lend a lot of support.

Longline bra

The differentiating factor with this style is the extra fabric that extends farther down your torso past the band (either just a few inches or closer to your hips). And this feature makes longline bras an excellent style to have in your collection, as they lend a little extra support, minimizing strain on your shoulders and back, while also smoothing out your silhouette at the waist. Did we mention this vintage throwback also looks impossibly sexy?

Convertible bra

If it’s versatility you’re looking for, then search no further. It’s safe to say that every woman should have a convertible bra in her collection, as it can be worn a multitude of ways, so you’re bound to get a ton of wear out of it. You can disconnect the straps and then transform them into a criss-cross, halter, or one-shoulder style, or remove them entirely for strapless tops and dresses. Luckily, this type of bra also comes in a range of cup styles, from convertible push-up bras to convertible contour bras, so you’re bound to find one that fulfills your individual needs.

Remember:

Building your bra collection shouldn’t be a chore, no matter what cup size you wear. So as you’re shopping, consider these aforementioned styles for a well-rounded arsenal that accommodates any wardrobe. Just one last tip: Be sure you’re wearing the correct size before investing in some fun new pieces. If you haven’t had one recently, a professional fitting is always a good idea for guaranteeing that no matter what style you choose, it looks flawless on.

It’s hard to say when we fell for longline bras. The truth is, they’ve been around for decades, but at some point, this throwback style came back into the picture — and we couldn’t be more grateful. Think of it as the ultimate lingerie multitasker: a combination bra and shapewear all-in-one. With a striking retro appeal, it lends added shaping benefits, smooth lines, and heightened support. And a longline bra looks equally stunning under a cocktail dress as it does under a blouse and blazer (or, of course, under nothing at all). Longline bras also come in a wide variety of iterations, including underwire, wire-free, strapless, bralette and more. In other words: You’re sure to find a longline bra that works for your shape, size and personal style.

Still, as with any bra you own, comfort is key, and some longline bras have a leg up in that regard. Looking for a longline bra that you can wear all day into the night? Here are some tips to consider:

Take your torso into account

Since a longline bra features more fabric under the bust, it’s important to keep the length of your torso in mind when buying this style to ensure it’s both comfortable and flattering. If you have a longer torso, you can certainly try some a longline bra that extends farther down your waist, while if you have a shorter torso, you’ll want to seek out one that only extends a few inches.

Always aim for adjustable

One of the main advantages of a long line bra is that it can reduce strain on your shoulders and back by better distributing the weight of your breast tissue. That’s an especially helpful perk if you either sit or stand for a long period of time throughout the day. However, you’re far more likely to reap this reward if you seek out a longline bra that has adjustable shoulder straps and a hook-and-eye closure in the back. These features allow you to customize the fit of the bra to your body, thus ensuring you get maximum support.

Don’t be afraid to try your bra sister size

The band of any bra plays a crucial role in lending support, and it’s worth noting that some longline bras when you’re wearing your typical band size. That’s because a longline bra also has to fit around your ribcage properly — so depending on the proportions of your torso, you may need to go up a band size. If that’s the case, you’ll then likely need to compensate for that change by going down a cup size (bra sister sizes for the win!).

Be on the lookout for bonus features

In addition to straps and a band that is adjustable, there are other features to look for in a longline bra. For example, boning in the underbust (and other parts) in a plunge longline bra can help give you extra support and lift. With lightly padded cups, it can also help with shaping if you want to achieve a super smooth, round, symmetrical look, or are concerned with coverage under a somewhat sheer or lightweight top. Worried about slippage? Anti-slip silicone tape on an unlined wire bralette will keep everything in place so you don’t have to stress about it.

Remember:

Not all long line bras are created equal. The perfect pick for you will depend on your particular body type, bust size, and preferences, in addition to your wardrobe. However, keeping these aforementioned pointers in mind will surely help to guide you toward a longline bra you’re bound to love. By the way — if you’re purchasing a longline bra for the first time and you haven’t been professionally fitted recently, there’s no time like the present. After all, making sure you’re sporting the correct size is the most important factor for a comfortable longline bra.

If you’ve done your research, you know that your bras only last about six months to a year (depending on several factors, of course). But what about the lifespan of your panties?

Let’s start by saying this: It’s shorter than you think.

We know what you’re thinking. “But I wash it regularly!” While you can judge whether a bra needs to be replaced by its physical condition, you can’t exactly do the same for underwear — for hygienic reasons, it’s a little more complicated than that. So, how often should you replace it? And furthermore, why is it important?

Read on for some answers to these particularly puzzling panty questions.

The truth about laundering habits

Mulberrys Garment Care conducted an online survey of over 1,000 Americans’ laundry habits. While there were some surprising results across the board, perhaps the most eye-opening statistic pertained to how often people wash their underwear. The majority of respondents (85 percent) claim to wash them after one to two wears, but 10.5 percent of women admitted to never washing them (yes, you read that right).

In regards to undies, there are risks involved with this kind of lax laundering. First of all, your underwear is worn directly against the skin, and you’re constantly shedding dead cells, which contain microorganisms that can promote bacterial growth. The last thing you want is to experience an allergic reaction, thrush or even a urinary tract infection, so obviously, washing them often is crucial. The Good Housekeeping Institute recommends that you wash your panties after every single use.

When to bid your favorites farewell

No matter how often you’re washing them, it’s advised that you throw them out after one year. Why? Well, 83 percent of underwear that’s considered clean still contains up to 10,000 of living bacteria, according to the GHI.

Keep in mind that you can generally wash your undies in warmer water than your bras, as you don’t have to worry about wreaking havoc on underwire, padding, etc. And washing your panties in hot water can be advantageous for sanitation purposes. Naturally, if your undies have holes, stains or other unsightly signs of wear and tear, are ill-fitting, or are even remotely uncomfortable, you have our permission to toss them at any point before a year is through. Just as with your bras, you deserve to be wearing panties that make you feel — and look — phenomenal.

What on earth would we do without sports bras? With the right set of features and a thoughtful construction, they can do everything from keeping us cool and dry during a spin class to keeping any bounce under control during a run. Once you do find the right sports bra, it goes without saying that you want to ensure the longevity of it so you can wear it for as many sweat sessions as possible. The key to making your sports bras last, of course, is caring for them properly.

Washing your sports bras is a very different ordeal than it is with other garments (and even other types of bras), as they’re made of specific moisture-wicking materials that demand special considerations.

Here are some top tips for washing your bras to keep them in optimal condition:

Be diligent

How often you wash your sports bras will depend somewhat on the kind of physical activity you’re doing in them. When you’re engaging in aerobics or kickboxing, for example, you’re no doubt sweating a lot more than when you’re taking a Pilates class. You’ll likely want to wash your bras every wear if you’re taking high-intensity classes, whereas you can get away with every three wears if you’re taking low-intensity classes.

Take it off, stat

The sooner you take that sports bra off after your workout, the better. That’s because bacteria and sweat can start to break down elastic in the fabric and even cause the band to stretch out. Better yet, remove the bra and rinse it out as soon as you get home. You can even multitask by giving it a rinse while you’re in your post-workout shower.

Hand wash whenever possible

Always check the care tag on your sports bra for any specific instructions, but note that hand washing is your best bet with sports bras since it’s the gentlest method. It’s especially crucial to wash them by hand if they contain underwire or any padding. You can hand wash your bras in a basin, sink or even bathtub. There are specially formulated sport detergents that can not only prevent damage to tech fabrics but also be more effective at getting any funk out of the fibers. Just don’t use bleach or fabric softener.

How to hand wash your sports bras

Fill your basin, sink or tub with cool water, add a decent amount of detergent depending on how many bras you’re washing, and let them soak for 20 minutes to an hour. You’ll likely need to rinse them more than once to make sure the water runs clear (leaving traces of detergent can risk mildew forming).

Be mindful with machines

If you must wash your bras in a machine, be sure to fasten any hook-and-eye closures if they have them to avoid snags, and put them in a mesh lingerie wash bag to prevent them from getting misshapen or tangled up with other items. Always opt for the delicate cycle, and cool or cold water.

Don’t use the dryer

A dryer machine can cause rapid wear and tear on technical fabrics, so avoid using it at all costs when it comes to your sports bras (and actually, any bras, for that matter). Lay your bras flat to dry, drape them over a drying rack or hang them up by the center gore — never hang them by the straps, as that could stretch them out over time.

Remember:

Now that you’re a pro at washing your sports bras properly, one final tip: It’s important to know when it’s time to part with them. This depends, of course, on how often you’re wearing them. That’s why if you’re super active (four to seven days a week), you’ll definitely want a few different sports bras in your collection so you can rotate them, thus supporting their longevity. Once you notice the sports bra’s fabric is fraying, the band isn’t snug enough, straps are falling down or it’s simply no longer offering adequate support, you’ll know it’s time to replace it.

Do you hand wash or machine wash your sports bras?

Of course, you have your everyday bras — those comfy T-shirt bras and full-cup underwire bras you run errands in, lounge around the house in, and wear to the office. They serve a purpose, that’s for sure. But what about those occasions when you want to go beyond basic? Whether it’s for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary or just regular ol’ date night, sometimes you’re specifically seeking out sexy bras — you know, the kind that makes you feel like a goddess and simultaneously make your S.O.’s jaw drop.

Wearing a bra with a seductive shape or flirty details under any outfit can be a sexy little secret, and we believe every woman deserves to have at least one (or three) in her collection. So here are some stores to consider for your shopping spree.

Lord & Taylor

Whether you’re looking for an underwire bra or wireless, a push-up bra or a plunge bra, Lord & Taylor basically has it all. One helpful feature, too, is that the department store offers product suggestions on every page — and those suggestions are based on what other women looking at the same bra were also scoping out.

Nordstrom

There are literally thousands of bras in the lingerie inventory at Nordstrom, so it goes without saying that you’re sure to find a sexy one that strikes your fancy. Shop by style (demi, unlined, bralette, push-up, etc.) and then from there, you can sort the results by newest products, price (low to high or vice versa) and customer rating. Since you may want to try the bras on before buying, you can also shop your local Nordstrom store to see which ones are available there. Pro tip: Scroll down to “size info” for some insider details, such as whether a particular bra only offers light support, the band is true to size, or Nordstrom recommends ordering one cup size up.

Her Room

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — bras are an investment. So naturally, you’re eager to get as much wear as possible out of your favorite undergarments. Still, at some point, you’ve likely donned a bra and wondered whether it’s past its prime. And unfortunately, there’s no distinct expiration date on the tag that tells you when it’s time to toss it.

So, how long should your bras last? In this guide, we’ll cover all the facts you need to know to answer this all-too-common question.

General guidelines

The lifespan of a bra depends (you don’t think the answer would be simple, did you?) on multiple factors. Still, as a general rule, a bra should last you somewhere between six and 12 months. Your everyday styles, like that go-to T-shirt bra, will likely be worse for wear after six to seven months, while that special occasion plunge bra could very well last you a full year or longer. Note that sports bras tend to have a shorter lifespan. This is because you’re washing them more often since you’re sweating more while wearing them, and moreover, consistently vigorous physical activity can impact the level of support it offers much faster.

On the fence about whether a bra has expired? Some tell-tale signs to look for include: a band that’s too loose on the tightest hook; missing hooks; stretched out straps; underwire that pokes out; misshapen cups; and frayed, torn, pilled, or stained fabric.

Key considerations

There are a number of factors that can affect the lifespan of your bra:

1.  Rotate your bras

For one, your bra will obviously last longer if it’s worn less often. That’s why we strongly advise having a solid collection of bras with enough styles to rotate throughout the week.

Wearing a bra two days in a row is particularly problematic, as you aren’t allowing the elastic in the band, straps, etc. to snap back to its original form, so it may start to stretch out instead.

Your level of activity will also impact how long your bra lasts — if you’re on your feet all day for work or engaging in a high intensity workout, it’s likely to wear out more quickly than if you’re seated at an office desk or taking a low-intensity yoga class.

2.  Buy the best quality you can afford

Quality also comes into play. High-quality bras that are made with sturdy fabrics and other materials, as well as more careful consideration in regards to construction and design, are made to last.

3.  Take good care of your bras

And last but certainly not least, care is a critical factor in terms of the longevity of your bras.

Washing your bras in a machine with no lingerie bag, tossing them into a dryer or using harsh detergent can wreak havoc on your beloved underthings. As such, we recommend hand washing your bras with specialized lingerie soap, and laying them flat or hanging them by the center gore to dry. (If you’re machine washing them, be sure to fasten all the hooks, put them in a lingerie bag, and wash them on a delicate cycle with cool or cold water). Even wringing out your bras or hanging them by the straps (which can stretch out the straps) may shorten their lifespan. Whatever you do, don’t use bleach — which is far too harsh on delicate bra fabrics and can be ultra-damaging to elastic.

Speaking of washing — while it’s crucial to remove the sweat and dirt that builds up with wear, you don’t want to overwash them. Every 3-5 wears should be sufficient for most bras (with sports bras being an obvious exception) unless you’re wearing them on a particularly sweltering summer day or wearing the same bra everyday (which we don’t recommend).

4.  Re-assess your lingerie wardrobe every six months

There comes a point in every bra’s life at which you have to say goodbye and armed with this knowledge, you’ll be able to much better gauge on when that’s necessary. Consider doing a check on your collection every few months to assess whether any of them need to be replaced. And if they’re still in good condition (or your bra size changed and you never wore them) consider donating them to one of the organizations here.

Remember: You deserve to wear well-fitting bras that lend maximum comfort, support, lift, and definition — so don’t settle for anything less!

Real talk: Being a DDD cup size isn’t easy (I should know, I am one.) Still, no one should suffer from a lack of bra options just because they happen to have a less common size. And luckily, there are still a solid number of brands that make 28-44DDD/E bras (DDD = an E cup in UK sizing), from T-shirt bras to plunge bras and everything in between.

Not sure where to find them? Next time you’re stressing that you can seem to find your size, try scoping out these stores.

Online Retailers

You’ll find a substantial selection of DDD/E bras by scouring the Internet — just be certain of your size in a particular brand since you can’t try them on.

Moreover, comments and tips from a pro fitter will help you further determine whether a particular bra will work for you. HerRoom even provides photos that show how the bra looks under six different necklines, so you’ll know whether it’s a practical purchase given your wardrobe.

Breakout Bras

There are a number of perks to shopping on Breakout Bras. For one, this site is ultra selective in which lines it carries, and only offers brands that make consistently well-fitting, high-quality bras with extensive size ranges. Breakout Bras also offers free shipping and a repeat customer discount. The site has a solid array of size DDD cup bras, and on each product page, you’ll find insightful comments from a pro fitter. This additional info, such as whether the band size on a certain longline bra runs small, or whether a sports bra is particularly well-suited to high-impact physical activity.

Brayola

It’s hard not to love Brayola — the site provides photos uploaded by real women wearing the bras, which can be helpful in guiding your shopping decisions. The site’s selection of DDD cup bras spans everything from wire-free bras to posture back support bras and convertible bralettes.

Local Lingerie Boutiques

What some boutiques lack in quantity of product they more than make up for in quality.

Advantages of shopping at a local lingerie boutique:

Shopping in-person at your local lingerie boutique has the obvious advantage of allowing you to get a professional fitting, as well as some individualized attention and assistance in choosing bras that are best for you. You can also shop the selection of some boutiques online as well, though.

Hourglass Lingerie

Hourglass Lingerie is all about embracing your curves, and finding undergarments that help you to do so. This Baltimore-based boutique also has a team of sizing specialists on hand that you can contact with any questions you have regarding fit. From supportive sports bras to lace-covered plunge bras, the store boasts a wide range of options.

Linda’s

Consider browsing the vast variety of undergarments at Linda the Bra Lady as well. Once you’ve filtered out the DDD cup bras, you can narrow your search results by color, style, brand, and underwire or wire-free.

Department Stores

It’s safe to say that department stores have a wealth of options to choose from when it comes to lingerie, and that includes DDD cup sizes.

Nordstrom

For example, Nordstrom has an impressive number of bras in this cup size. If there’s a store near you, it might be worth going to do your shopping in person, as their expertly trained staff can conduct a complimentary fitting while you’re there.

Lord & Taylor

Another department store to try is Lord & Taylor. After sorting by your DDD cup and band size, you can filter results by color, price, brand, and style.

Remember:

Finding bras you love in your size shouldn’t be a struggle. One final tip before you start shopping: It’s worth noting that a DDD cup size can also be labeled as an F in US sizing. Moreover, when converting to UK sizing, it’s important to know that a DDD is the same as an E cup.
