It’s all too easy to settle for a bra that “basically fits.” You know — the one that for all intents and purposes, holds your breasts, but doesn’t quite contain them perfectly. Maybe it’s a push-up bra with straps that occasionally fall down, a t-shirt bra on which the band just isn’t snug enough, or a full-cup bra that a bit of cleavage spills out of sometimes. Newsflash: a bra that’s even slightly ill-fitting isn’t just an annoyance and an inconvenience, it can also negatively affect your health.

That’s where a professional bra fitting comes in. In fact, here are some of the top problems you can prevent by getting a bra fitting done by an expert.

Back pain

Wearing the wrong size bra can put a lot of strain on your back, especially if you’re full busted. Think about it: you’re more likely to hunch over if your bra isn’t quite holding the weight. Moreover, a bra that’s too tight can put pressure on your rib cage and back, causing pain.

Headaches

It may sound far-fetched, but a poorly fitting bra can actually cause a tension headache. That’s because when your bra doesn’t offer enough support, the upper back and neck muscles have to compensate for that. When those muscles are overworked from supporting that weight, you could very well feel a cervicogenic headaches coming on.

Spine stiffness

Your spine is meant to be able to move and bend in many different ways. But if the band on your bra is too tight, it can cause stiffness in your spine by restricting that movement, particularly in your upper back.

Indentations

There’s no reason why bra straps should leave unsightly indents in your shoulders — if you’ve already tried adjusting them to loosen them and you’re still experiencing that issue, then you know your bra doesn’t fit properly. The worst part of this problem is that if not corrected, those indentations can become permanent. Speaking of marks — underwire that’s too tight against your rib cage or even digging into your breast tissue can cause them, too.

ill fitting bra and breast pain

Poor posture

Finding yourself slumping forward frequently? An ill-fitting bra can negatively impact your posture. This is because when there isn’t sufficient support for your breasts, gravity takes over and the weight of your breasts will naturally cause your shoulders to fold forward.

Sagging

Your breasts are suspended by a system of ligaments — and when your bra doesn’t keep your breasts in place well enough, those ligaments will stretch out from frequent bouncing. The result? Your boobs start to sag much more quickly, as the Cooper’s ligaments are what keep them looking perky.

Indigestion

When your breasts aren’t supported, they’re more likely to rest on the rib cage — and if they’re on the larger side, this can put pressure on your diaphragm. As a result, you may experience restricted breathing. Furthermore, though, this combined with poor posture can cause digestive issues, such as heartburn, or worsen existing ones, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Nerve damage

Some key signs of “Bra Strap Syndrome,” also known as Costoclavicular Syndrome, include weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain in the arms and hands, as well as limited movement in the arms. The cause? Bra straps that are too tight, thus restricting blood flow and sometimes causing nerve damage to the area near your ribs (yikes, we know).

Clearly, it’s not worth the risk wearing a bra that doesn’t fit. The best way to prevent any of this discomfort or damage is to get yourself measured by a trained professional at least once a year, or after any significant weight changes. Not only will a pro help you to determine your correct band and cup size, but they will also educate you on how a bra is supposed to fit, as well as which styles may work best for you.

Boudoir photos are a popular option for a birthday, Valentine’s Day, anniversary, and wedding as well, and the trend makes total sense.

If you’re still mulling the idea over, we’ve rounded up some of the top reasons why boudoir photos may just make the perfect present.

It’s a sexy surprise.

Picture this: Your significant other opens a mysterious album to find the love of their life decked out in luxe lingerie, posing seductively for the camera. Can you imagine the look on their face? Trust us, it’ll be priceless (in fact, you may want to capture it with a quick snapshot or video while they’re opening it). Depending on the nature of your relationship, this may be a side of you they’ve never even seen. It may be time to spice things up after many years together. Either way, you can bet they’ll appreciate having these stunning images to glance at whenever they please. For brides-to-be especially, boudoir photo shoots have become increasingly popular. Think about it: There’s hardly a more intimate way to enter your new life together (and kick off the honeymoon) than showing off your sultry side.

It’s a gift to yourself, too.

The truth is, boudoir photos aren’t just a gift for him — you’ll reap so many rewards from the experience.

For one, think of the self-esteem boost you’ll get seeing expertly shot images of yourself with your hair and makeup professionally done, and gorgeous lacy underthings adorning your body. Having a pro photographer guide you through poses — this is your chance to channel your own inner model, goddess, and siren all at once. Rest assured, if you have any kind of hangups about your body, this experience could very well change your perspective for the better. Getting in touch with your seductive side is sure to put some of those insecurities to rest.

Not to mention, having a reason to get dolled up with the help of a #glamsquad is a gift in itself as well. We women tend to put others’ needs before ourselves, so indulging in a day of pampering may be just what you need to feel rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of self-worth and focus on self-care.

And let’s not forget that a boudoir photo shoot presents an excuse to buy some lingerie. Been eyeing that black padded bra with floral bouquet lace? Dying to add that French blue plunge longline bra to your collection? Treat yourself to a little shopping spree and you’ll have some exciting new pieces to sport for your photo shoot, but also to bust out on date night down the road.

This is not a gift you wear a few times and then give away. It’s not a gift that might be the wrong size or the wrong color, or potentially break after several uses. It’s a gift that you both will cherish for years to come.

On a particularly frigid Friday morning in Boston, I awoke to a startling realization: Today was the day I would finally slip on some lacy underthings and harness my inner model for my long-awaited boudoir shoot. If you read my previous post about pre-shoot planning, you know there were a lot of considerations leading up to this day, from carefully selecting outfits to honing in on my aesthetic. While I felt immensely prepared, that didn’t change the fact that I was about to embark on a somewhat nerve-wracking experience for the first time.

If you’re considering doing a boudoir shoot, you may be eager to know what goes on behind the scenes before taking the plunge yourself. I know I certainly was! That’s why I’ve recounted my experience — to give you an idea of what to expect when it comes time to don your unmentionables and strike a pose.

Time for beautifying

Disclaimer: I’m really, really finicky when it comes to my hair. So while it’s definitely advisable to get your tresses professionally styled for a boudoir shoot, I opted to do it myself. That meant a blowdry the night before the shoot, and then curling it into loose curls with a 1.25-inch iron. Some volumizing mousse at the roots and a layer or three of hairspray, and I was good to go.

When it came to makeup, though, I knew I had to defer to an expert — particularly as Annika, the photographer at Ma Cherie Studios, warned me that about 30 percent of makeup is lost with the camera. That meant I’d need more makeup than usual to make my features pop. I booked an appointment at Sephora’s beauty studio and brought in some Pinterest images of the look I was going for — a smoldering taupe smokey eye with dramatic lashes, subtle glow, and soft pink lip. I made sure to tell the makeup artist that this was for a photoshoot so that she was specifically choosing colors and formulas that would translate well on camera.

Setting the mood

When I arrived at the studio, Annika offered me a glass of bubbly, and I lay my lingerie options out on the bed. Together, we chose the three ensembles we thought showed variety in terms of color, fit and features. While I changed behind the curtain in her studio, she turned up the volume on a stellar playlist (so key for establishing the vibe) and tweaked the lighting in the room to get it just right. After a few test shots, we were rolling.

Ready, set, go!

Annika let me keep the robe on for the first set of images, which definitely helped me to ease into feeling comfortable in my skivvies. To my relief, she directed my poses in great detail — from how to tilt my chin and where to place my hands to the angle of my torso. As she snapped away, she suggested small adjustments — such as to look directly at the camera, to pop one knee inward, or to arch my back more. Before I knew it, she instructed me to drop the robe in a pool on the floor. And there I was: in a cassis colored contour bra and panty set, patent 4.5” heels, and remarkably, totally at ease.

We made two additional outfit changes and moved around the room to get a vast range of poses, and angles. At one point I was lying on my side on a fur-covered bench near the windowsill in a lace teddy, at another, I was stretched out on the bed in a half back-bend, and finally, I was standing up facing a white exposed brick wall with Annika shooting me from behind. Some of the poses definitely required a little more strength and flexibility than others — leading me to vocalize my newfound respect for models, and Annika cautioned that I may even be a bit sore tomorrow. Before each outfit change, she made sure to show me a shot or two to confirm that I was happy, and each time I was amazed at how stunning the images looked before any retouching.

Final Thoughts

When I think back on the experience, there’s one moment that stands out in my mind. I was lying on the bed on my back, and Annika was shooting from my feet when she paused and said, “Your legs are amazing.” Every woman has that one primary physical insecurity, and mine is definitely my legs, so this came as a shock. When I told her this, she laughed. “Why? Look at them!” she said, showing me a shot she had just taken. And as I looked, I suddenly saw them in a different light.

I guess, ultimately, that’s what a boudoir shoot is all about. It’s not just an opportunity to pick out some lingerie and get dolled up for a day — it’s a chance to quiet all the self-doubts and body hang-ups, take a step back and finally appreciate yourself for the goddess you are. So, what are you waiting for?

There’s no doubt about it: Sagging in the bust department can be a real bummer. Many women are affected by this issue for a wide variety of reasons, including menopause, significant weight loss, genetics, or mere age (and, let’s face it, gravity). Not wearing a supportive bra can also contribute to sagging, which is why it’s crucial to find the right undergarments. While a bra won’t necessarily solve the sag, it will make your breasts appear lifted while also preventing the problem from worsening.

So, which are the best bra features for breasts that have started to droop? Here are our top recommendations:

Marion Unlined Wire Bra

As far as supportive features go, underwire is pretty crucial. A wireless bra often doesn’t offer the same lift as a wired bra. An unlined wire bra will provide plenty of lift to counteract the sagging, and those who prefer to go padding-free will appreciate the lightweight design, which lends a natural shape to the breasts.

Ever notice horizontal or vertical seams along the cups of a bra? It may seem like a subtle detail, but a multi-part cup bra, sometimes known as a three-part cup bra or four-part cup bra depending on the number of cup parts, is designed to give your breasts a lifted, supported, and defined shape. Many full-busted women love these bras because they provide lift and separation without making their boobs look bigger than they are.

If you’re seeking a super smooth, rounded shape in addition to some lift for sagging breasts, a contour underwire bra is an ideal selection. This style can sculpt your breasts into a more rounded, symmetrical shape while also ensuring they’re adequately supported.

Another great choice? The Charlotte Padded Bra, with its low demi styling, adjustable wide set straps, and multi-part foam cups encased in luxe satin.

Matilda Push-Up Bra

how to stop boobs from sagging

Parfait Matilda Push-Up Bra P53116 | Parfait Matilda Hipster P5315 in Nude

If your boobs are lacking fullness up top, a push-up bra might be just what you need. Push-up bras are designed with strategically placed padding to lift boobs up. By lifting and centering breast tissue, push-up bras create a rounded and symmetrical shape.

Remember:

Any of the aforementioned bra features will certainly prove helpful — however, there are a few other considerations to keep in mind when it comes to sagging breasts. As the band provides the majority of the support, make sure the bra’s band is sturdy and includes multiple rows of adjustable hook-and-eye closures for a perfect fit. You’ll definitely want to make sure you’re wearing the correct band size — if it’s too big, it will only contribute to the sagging issue. When you purchase the bra, you should be able to comfortably sport it on the loosest closure (that way, you can tighten as it stretches over time, meaning you’ll get more wear out of it). Adjustable shoulder straps are also key in terms of providing sufficient lift, as well as achieving a customized fit.

Feel like you’re not quite filling out that push-up bra, or spilling out of that demi-cup bra all of a sudden? You may not be imagining things.

Breasts can shrink or expand for a variety of reasons — and an augmentation surgery isn’t the only reason why your boobs might be looking bigger or smaller, either.

Here are some of the top factors that can cause a size change in your breasts:

Weight loss/gain

If you notice the number on the scale has changed, then your breast size likely has, too. It makes sense since your breasts are made up partly of fat tissue. This is more likely to occur if the weight shift has been significant (i.e., more than a few pounds). Naturally, if you’ve gained weight, you’ll increase in cup size, while your size will decrease if you’ve lost weight. (Pro tip: If your boobs are looking a little deflated after significant weight loss, a molded bra can help both lift and sculpt your breasts into a more desirable shape).

Exercise

You may be surprised at how much your strength training regimen can impact your breasts. Working your back or chest muscles (located underneath the breasts) more often or more intensely can have an impact on your band size, for example. Additionally, depending on the type of workout your engaging in, you may see an overall decrease in body fat — and as that includes your boobs, your breast tissue could decrease as well.

Your period

Sensitivity and soreness aren’t the only breast-related PMS symptoms — your boobs can also change in size. Blame it on the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which fluctuate over the course of your cycle. Moreover, your body has a tendency to retain water during your period, which can make your boobs appear fuller. You will likely notice that the change is the most radical directly before you get your period, but rest assured your breast size will gradually return to normal either during your period or right after it ends.

does your bra size change when you lose weight

Pregnancy

As your body begins preparing for breastfeeding, your bra size will probably begin to increase gradually over the course of pregnancy (starting as soon as week six or seven). That’s because all the ducts that contribute to milk production are swelling to get ready for lactation, and additionally, increases in hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and lactogen lead glands in the breasts to grow. Every woman is different in this regard, of course, ranging from a slight increase to several cup sizes. You may notice an increase in cup size, band size, or both.

Breastfeeding

Looking pretty voluptuous as you begin nursing your new baby? It’s no surprise. As the milk comes in and the blood supply surges to your breasts, your boobs may feel fuller. However, once you start the weaning process and milk begins to dry up, your breasts will likely shrink back down. After this shift, your breasts may return to the size they were before pregnancy, or they may end up slightly larger or smaller than they were initially. Fun fact: Some women may notice that one breast gets larger than the other during breastfeeding, as it’s producing more milk. Fear not — a padded bra can help to even out the appearance of the breasts.

Menopause

During menopause, there’s a noteworthy decline in estrogen as your body no longer recognizes a need for milk-producing glands, so one would assume that as a result, your breasts would decrease in density/fullness and overall size as the glandular tissue shrinks. However, that’s not always necessarily the case. In fact, in one 2004 study, 18.6 percent of the women who participated reported having to buy a larger bra size than they did pre-menopause, and only 1.7 percent reported needing a smaller size. This is likely due to the fact that weight gain and water retention are common during menopause.

Clearly, your bra size can change multiple times throughout your life as a result of various factors. That’s why it’s advisable to get a professional fitting at least once a year — you may not notice subtle shifts, and it’s crucial to be sure you’re wearing the correct size to look and feel your best.

When it comes to sports bras, the reality is that there’s no such thing as “one style fits all.” Ultimately, finding the right one all depends on what type of exercise you’re doing, as different workouts put varying levels of strain on the ligaments and connective tissue around the breasts. Put simply: You need to choose a sports bra that will control the bounce factor — not just so you don’t feel self-conscious during that cardio dance class, but also so you don’t do any damage (which, it’s worth noting, can lead to sagging).

There are three types of sports bras: low-impact, medium-impact, and high-impact, and each offers a different kind of construction and set of features that are designed to meet the needs of specific kinds of physical activity. If your workout plan includes a variety of exercises, it’s likely that you’ll need one of each of these sports bra styles in your collection to meet the unique requirements of every level of activity.

So, what are the differences? And how do you know which is right for your workout? We compiled this guide to make shopping for sports bras super simple.

Low Impact Sports Bra

difference between low impact and high impact sports bra

Some examples of low-impact exercise include yoga, Pilates, and strength training. Basically, a low-impact sports bra is meant for activities during which your feet aren’t pounding the ground whatsoever, and therefore don’t cause a lot of bouncing. That means that while the bra is certainly designed with comfort in mind, it may offer less support than other styles. A low-impact sports bra is typically lightweight and unpadded, with super soft stretchy fabric and slightly narrower shoulder straps. This style is stellar for any activity that demands flexibility and involves slower movement. It’s also a great option for the gal-on-the-go who likes wearing a sports bra while running errands or doing housework.

Medium Impact Sports Bra

what is a medium impact sports bra

Parfait Active Sports Bra P5541 in Claret Red

A medium-impact sports bra is tailored to activities that are slightly more intense, such as spinning/cycling, skiing, using an elliptical trainer, power walking, Zumba, and hiking. These sports bras may or may not contain individual cups, but regardless, will restrict movement more effectively than low-impact bras. Look for styles that feature moisture-wicking cups, as you’re more likely to work up a sweat while engaging in medium-impact workouts. Ideally, a medium-impact sports bra will contain underwire to separate the breasts and keep them in place, as well as a wider underband for added support.

High Impact Sports Bra

what is a high impact sports bra

This kind of sports bra is definitely a necessity for workouts that entail a high level of impact on the floor or ground — think running, boot camps, aerobics and plyometrics (jump training). A high-impact sports bra will likely contain underwire (sometimes referred to as an encapsulation sports bra), padded cups, and wider shoulder straps. The cups are typically defined, thus surrounding and supporting each individual breast. The fabric will feel firmer and denser, and the overall bra will feel heavier than a low-impact sports bra. There may be boning in the sides, and the neckline may come up higher to offer additional coverage.

Remember:

No matter which level bra you choose, there are certain factors to keep in mind while shopping — especially if you’re full-busted. Sports bras that feature adjustable straps will allow you to get a more accurate fit, and ensure that your breasts are well supported no matter what type of sweat session you’re participating in. You’ll also likely want to seek out a sports bra that contains hook-and-eye closures in the back so that you can tighten or loosen it as needed (thus getting more wear out of it in the long run). The fact of the matter is, if you can pull a sports bra over your shoulders (which are much wider than your chest), it’s unlikely that it can lend adequate support for your breasts.

Since fit directly impacts support, and support affects your posture, appearance and also the health of your breasts, you may want to seek out a professional fitting to make sure you purchase a sports bra that minimizes strain on your bust.

It’s safe to say we’ve all been there. You glance downward to find an uncomfortable surprise: your headlights are showing, and aside from tossing on a sweater, there’s not much you can do about it. Sure, keeping warm can help avoid this embarrassing scenario, but you can’t avoid air conditioning and sheer tops forever. Bras that have moderate to thick linings such as padded bras, T-shirt bras, push-up bras and molded bras, are far less likely to cause any nipple-showing incidents. But what about occasions when you want to wear a lightweight bralette or sports bra?

Whether you’re self-conscious about your headlights in the workplace or just modest in general, these strategies should help you to conceal your nipples — no matter what bra you’re sporting.

Non-adhesive covers

Does the idea of applying something sticky to your nipples make you squeamish? Then consider non-adhesive covers, which are typically made of silicone, and will still offer an extra layer of concealment. You can place these into the cups of any bra, and as they’re seamless and smooth, with an opaque center that thins out toward the edges, they won’t show through (even under a thin bra). Many of these products are available in a range of skin tones to ensure they’re totally invisible, even under a white top. Some products even come in different diameters to accommodate a variety of nipple sizes.

Adhesive Covers

If you’re concerned about your nipple covers staying put, the adhesive variety is sure to stay in place. In fact, many women will don them when they want to go entirely bra-less under a particular dress or top. There is a multitude of different adhesive covers to choose from, so be sure to select one in a material that’s comfortable against your skin, as well as one that matches your skin tone so it isn’t noticeable. Many adhesive covers are reusable and even washable, so you can get maximum wear out of them.

Layering

If you’re planning on sporting a sheer, flowy blouse (or any top that isn’t skin tight), you can wear a camisole over your bra for an extra layer of defense against nipple visibility. Look for a cami that hugs your body and matches your skin tone if you want it to appear seamless and invisible under your shirt. You may even find this kind of camisole can double as shapewear, depending on the material and construction.

how to wear a bralette without nipples showing

Remember:

Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal comfort level whether or not you fret about your nipples showing. (Because the truth is, we all have them — nothing to be ashamed about!) The aforementioned strategies should help prevent the high beams from making an appearance, but there are a few final tips to keep in mind. Obviously, super light, thin or clingy fabrics will draw attention to nipples, so opt for thicker fabrics or flowy cuts if it’s a major concern. Also, note that darker colors will conceal nipples better than white or light colors. Pro tip: If you need some extra help in a pinch and can’t procure nipple covers, try cutting panty liners in half and inserting them into your bra cups.

Real talk: There’s something about putting on a cute bra that makes us feel ready for anything. Maybe it’s something as simple as a bow detail at the center gore on a push-up bra, or patterned lace and scalloped trip on a padded bra. Regardless, there are some bras that simply give us an instant boost when we wear them, and every girl deserves to have a few in her arsenal.

But where can you find high-quality bras that fit well but also look cute? We’ve rounded up some of our favorite sources for bras that are anything but boring.

Nordstrom

With over 1,000 bras, Nordstrom has quite the impressive collection — so you’re bound to find something that catches your eye and works for your wardrobe. We love that you can search by color, which comes in handy when you’re specifically on the hunt for a purple, red or metallic bra. You can also search by a particular style, such as an unlined wire bra. Sort by customer rating to see which bras other women are loving, or by your own individual preferences (after taking a quick quiz). You can even enter your zip code and only shop for items that are available at your local Nordstrom store.

Kohls

The best part about shopping for bras at Kohl’s is that not only can you search by basic elements such as brand, size, and price, but also by material (such as lace) or feature (such as  (back-smoothing, underwire, or front closure). That makes it even easier to hone in on cute bras that meet your unique desires.

Linda’s Online

There are over 30 different styles to shop at Linda’s, from balconet and backless bras to plunge padded bras in fun patterns. You can also filter the results by whether you want underwire or wire-free bras. If you have a question about sizing/fit, you can “ask Linda” with the simple push of a button — or visit the store in New York City or New Jersey to take advantage of the complimentary fittings from the team of experts.

Breakout Bras

On Breakout Bras, it’s super easy to look for visually appealing undergarments — in fact, there’s an entire category dedicated to sexy/pretty bras (think floral printed wire bras and embroidered balconet longline bras with contrast satin). From there, you can narrow down the results by cup size/band size, color, and brand. Be sure to scroll down and read the fitter’s comments on each product page, which include such helpful insider info as whether the band runs tight, the cups provide stellar cleavage or the bra is particularly flattering for full busts.

Brayola

Whether you’re looking for a push-up bra that puts your decolletage on display, a demi-cup bra that’s semi-revealing, or just a stellar T-shirt bra in a fun color, Brayola has a myriad of categories to choose from. You can sort the results by best-selling products if you’re interested in what’s currently trendy, and see photos of the bras on real women to get a sense of how they fit. Seeking out some cute matching sets? You can filter out bras that come with corresponding panties.

If you’re still not quite finding bras that line up with your personal style, you may want to scope out your local lingerie boutique. Independent stores tend to carry hard-to-find brands and sizes, so it’s worth scouring the selection to see if there are any unusual pieces that strike your fancy. As an added bonus, you can partake in a professional fitting while you’re in the store, as well as try the bras on before you buy them to make sure they offer a flawless fit for your particular figure.

If someone had proposed the concept of a boudoir photo shoot to me 5 years ago, I would have laughed. Strip down to my skivvies in front of a total stranger and pose seductively for the camera? Not likely.

But something shifted in my late 20s — a newfound confidence in every aspect of my life, from taking charge of my life professionally to finding a regular workout schedule and seeing the results. It took a while, but I was finally feeling comfortable in my own skin, and I suddenly felt the urge to document this phase of my life. “Now,” I thought, is the time for this photo shoot. “Now or never.”

So if you’ve been considering a boudoir shoot yourself (and there are so many worthy reasons you should), you may be curious as to what goes into the process. How does one research, plan and prepare for one of these shoots? That’s why I’m offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what happens before the camera starts clicking.

Finding a photographer

I didn’t have to do a ton of research to find my ideal photographer — social media stepped in to guide me. My favorite local lingerie boutique, which I follow on Instagram, re-posted one of her stunning images of a young woman stretched out on the floor in a pink lace bodysuit with an arched back — and, as they say — when you know, you know.

Pro tip: Be sure to ask for recommendations at your local boutique, and you may even get a discount on the products by working with one of their partner photographers!

After scoping out the rest of her impressive portfolio, reading her quirky bio, and seeing that Ma Cherie Studios was voted best of weddings for 2016 & 2017 on The Knot, I was sold. We had an initial chat on the phone, which gave me a sense of her personality, and I knew straight away I’d be comfortable working with her — which is key, as I’m going to be in my unmentionables, after all.

Piecing together my wardrobe

Now came the fun part: Picking out my outfits. Annika, the photographer, mentioned on the phone that I likely already own a couple pieces that would work perfectly. So I poured a glass of Zinfandel and peeled through my collection, mixing and matching sets and trying on teddies I hardly ever get to wear.

After settling on a purple contour bra and a black floral lace unlined wire bra with matching panties, I knew I’d need to purchase a couple specialty pieces to round out my wardrobe — so I picked out two bodysuits that felt flattering, and that I figured would photograph well.

Planning every particular

A couple weeks before the shoot, the photographer and I had our pre-shoot consultation. During this discussion, she reassured me that she’d be guiding me through very specific poses and facial expressions (“no need to practice!” she said), and made some recommendations about footwear (such as to opt for heels that are at least 3.5 inches to avoid visually shortening my legs). She also mentioned that the camera eats 30 percent of makeup worn, and recommended going a tad heavier than usual to emphasize my features.

Then she asked me a series of in-depth questions: What kind of look was I going for (romantic, sexy, glamorous, retro, etc.)? Did I prefer black and white or color images? How do I feel about accessorizing? Which celebrity’s personal style do I most relate to? What are my favorite stores to shop at? All of my responses would be helping Annika to build a Pinterest board around my photo shoot to give me a sense of the aesthetic.

Finally, she asked perhaps the most important question: which parts of my body do I feel best about that I want to accentuate (eyes, hips, derriere, etc.)? When I mentioned my hourglass shape she assured me: “We can definitely show off those curves!”

Counting down to the day of the photo shoot

So, do I feel ready for my boudoir debut? While undoubtedly some nerves will set in the day of the shoot, taking control of the littlest details has helped me to feel empowered and — dare I say — excited. Stay tuned for a full account of my experience the day of the photo shoot.
