how long do bras last

Parting with your favorite bra is a harrowing event. It’s like saying goodbye to a much-loved friend. It’s always been there for you, but in the end, you have to go your separate ways. Still, when a bra gets old and wears out, you need to let it go! Luckily, there are a few things you can do to prolong its life.

1.  Avoid putting them in the dryer

If you’ve been using the dryer on your bras until now, you need this advice more than you know. Putting a bra in the dryer is a dangerous game and, frankly, one that you really should not be playing. The heat that the machine uses to dry the material can often be too much for your bra and may even melt the underwire too. It is far better to leave your bras to dry naturally over a day or so (depending how warm the climate is!). Sure, it may be a pain to have to wait that long, but it’s certainly worth saving your precious lingerie.

2.  Have different bras for different occasions

Wearing the same bra all day, every day is a mistake. You absolutely need to have different bras for different occasions. The fact of the matter is that bras won’t last a long period if you wear them on a day to day basis. Just like anything else, they will start to wear more and more when you use them. It’s worth investing in an array of quality bras – from plunge bras to t-shirt ones – that you can wear to different things. That way, you will not end up wearing one of the bras out sooner than any of the others.

3.  Wash your bras every 3-5 wears

How often do you wash your bras at the moment? We’ve all been guilty of leaving it a little too long between washes. In reality, you need to make sure that wash your bra at least once every two washes. Leaving it for any longer than that could be damaging to the material, not to mention unhygienic. Once you get into the habit of washing your lingerie on a really regular basis, it will make all difference. Prioritizing this aspect of your overall lingerie care is the best thing you can do for yourself.

4.  Don’t stuff your lingerie all in a drawer

Where do you usually keep your lingerie? Often enough, we can all be a little lazy. We don’t give much thought to how we keep things and where we store them. If you just throw them all in a drawer and don’t worry about them, you’re making the wrong move. Doing so means that they will end up crumpled and squashed. As you can imagine, delicate lingerie items are just that  – delicate. You need to treat them with care at all times. Rather than keeping things in drawers, you ought to be hanging them up. Of course, you may not have enough storage space for that, but it’s worth thinking of how you can best keep your bras.

5.  Use a mesh lingerie bag

Should you tend to wash your bras in a machine, you want to do all you can to make sure that they don’t get damaged during the process. You can actually get mesh lingerie bags that protect your items when you wash them. That means that they won’t mingle with your other garments too much and will ultimately stay in top notch condition. It could be worth shopping around and finding a quality mesh bag from a retailer that you trust. That way, you can be 100% sure that your lingerie pieces will be safe as they clean.

6.  Hand-wash delicate bras

Of course, if you have especially delicate bras, you may want to hand-wash them. While it’s a little dull and boring to have to do so, hand-washing is one of the easiest ways to make sure that you don’t damage the material at all. You can be as gentle as you need to be when you decide to take on this method too, which really does make a whole load of difference. Be sure to use a light cleanser as well – that way, you know that the detergent won’t be too strong for the garment. Phew.

7.  Take care with different colors

Remember what your mom told you – you need to sort your laundry by color. You can’t mix light and dark colors in the same wash or you may find that the dyes run. That means that if you have dark bras, you need to pop them in with other dark colors and tones of material. If, on the other hand, you happen to have white bras, you need to wash them with only white tones or other, similarly pale colors. It may seem like a basic thing, but you would not believe how many people get this wrong.

When you invest in a quality piece of lingerie, it’s your duty to make sure that it stands the test of time. The way in which you treat it, store it, and, indeed, wash it will play a part in how long it ends up lasting. So long as you follow the advice here, you should have no problem getting as much use as possible out of your brand new bra. After all, when you truly love your new garment, you need to take proper care of it!
