Do You Have To Change Your Bra Everyday?
How many bras do you own and actually wear? According to a study by the cleaning experts at Dr. Beckmann, the average woman owns approximately 15 bras. She also wears her bras seven times before washing them. This could mean one of two things – either she does laundry every three months or she wears the same one or two bras every day.
As a bra fitter, I’ve found that the latter is usually true. Most women wear the same bra every day without thinking anything of it. But wearing the same bra every day can have some unfortunate consequences. If you’re wearing the same bra every day, you might notice that you need to replace your bra more often than you should (the average bra should last you six months to one year with proper care and wear) or that your skin is breaking out where your bra normally sits.
So how often should you change your bra? Read on for the answer to this common question and more in our guide below.
Why you should never wear the same bra every day
1. It shortens the lifespan of the bra
Wearing the same bra every day can shorten the lifespan of the bra by stretching out the elastic in the bra band and prevent it from going back to its original shape. High stretch fabrics are especially susceptible to losing their shape and stretching out, which is why we never recommend wearing the same bra too days in a row. Breaks between wears allow the bras to retain their shape and help your bras last longer than two or three months.
2. It’s not hygienic
Your bras retain sweat, fragrance, oil, moisture, and dead skin cells until they’re washed. Because of this, wearing the same bra every day may lead to clogged pores and blemishes on your chest, back, and breasts. We recommend rotating your bras so you never wear the same bra two days in a row and washing your bras after 2-3 wears. Remember: the more you sweat, the more often you should wash your bras. Sports bras and bras that are worn during the summer months should be washed after every wear.
3. It’s good to have a spare bra
When it comes to bras, it’s good to have ‘one to wash, one to wear, at least one spare.’ Three bras are a good starting number if you’re building your lingerie wardrobe. On the other hand, you might wear the same bra every day because it’s the only one that fits. If that sounds like you, it’s probably time for a bra fitting. A bra fitting can help you find bras that fit feel and feel amazing – and give you different bra options to wear throughout the week. You can get a bra fitting at a local lingerie boutique for free and a bra fitter will handpick bras for you to try on.
If spending $50-$70 on a bra isn’t an option at the moment, there are plenty of lingerie sales and deals that can help you save money on a new bra or two. Your local lingerie boutique will likely have a few bras under $50 and great deals can be found online too. Nordstrom Rack, Kohl’s, and HerRoom are good places to check out for bras on sale. As always, opt for the best quality you can afford. A $25 on-sale bra from a high-quality brand will likely last you much longer than an $8 or $10 bra.
