self care

Between work, social events, our relationships, and family obligations, sometimes it feels like we never really take the time to stop, listen to our own needs, and tend to ourselves. And the buzzy term “self-care” has been on the rise for precisely that reason: to encourage us to tune into our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. So, what does self-care look like?

Without further ado, here are some simple, surprising ways to practice self-care:

Get creative

When was the last time you busted out some paints, knitting needles or a sewing machine? There’s something incredibly cathartic about creating something, whether it’s a collage, a sketch, or a sculpture. Not only do these activities get your mind off of daily stressors, thus putting you in a state of relaxation, but they also feed your creativity and help you to hone the skills that make you feel good about yourself. Who knows? You could develop a new hobby that you decide to foster. If you’re not sure where to start, think about what most inspired and engaged your 10-year-old self. And don’t be afraid to try new things, even if you suspect you might not be “good” at them.

Have an at-home spa experience

One of the most obvious ways to practice self-care is to indulge in spa treatments. But a budget-friendly way to approach this is to create a relaxing spa day at home. Start by setting up your aromatherapy diffuser or lighting some candles and turning on a zen playlist to set the mood. Make a batch of refreshing spa water with cucumbers or fresh fruit, or make yourself a soothing cup of tea. Then, luxuriate in a warm bath with some Epsom salts or a bath bomb. Apply a DIY body scrub to exfoliate your skin — you may even try a sheet mask or a clay mask to enhance your complexion as well. Finish with a manicure and a pedicure, along with a relaxing foot soak.

We’re big advocates of treating yourself, and we’re also firm believers that you don’t have to splurge on an expensive massage or designer shoes to give yourself a boost. Try any of these strategies to up your self-care efforts and discover a happier, healthier you.

Turn off your devices

Most of us spend far too much time in front of our digital screens. Sure, they help us to stay connected to friends and family. But in many ways, they can wreak havoc on our self-care. Scrolling through Instagram or Facebook might seem like an entertaining distraction, but often doing so causes us to compare our lives to others’. As a result, we’re left leaving inadequate. Make an effort to power down your electronic devices for at least 30 minutes to an hour each day.  If possible, we advise having a digital detox day once in a while where you power down all your gadgets. Doing so will force you to focus inward, and perhaps even connect more with the people you love in real life.

Reconnect with nature

Spending some time outside is a stellar way to practice self-care. Not only is the scenery inherently calming, but being one with nature stirs your soul and reminds you that there is beauty in this world, even when life feels chaotic — it’s downright therapeutic. Whether you decide to hike through a local forest, jog by the harbor, stroll barefoot through a nearby park, or enjoy a picnic by the river, make time to appreciate nature on a regular basis, and you’re sure to feel instantly more centered.

Take yourself on a solo date

There’s no reason why you need to wait for someone to take you on a date. Maybe there’s a new tapas restaurant downtown that you’re dying to try out, or maybe there’s a comedy showing at the local movie theater you want to see. Alternatively, you might enjoy an espresso over a good book at a trendy cafe. There’s hardly a better way to treat yourself than to go out on a solo date.

Wear lingerie for no reason

Who says you can only wear lingerie for date night? Slipping on a lacy teddy or sultry set with a longline bra and matching Brazilian thong feels extra luxurious when you’re just lounging around the house with nowhere to go. And what better reason could there be for donning your sexiest lingerie than simply to feel like your most fabulous self? So next time you’re having a low-key Sunday night in, trade your leggings or PJs for some seductive underthings and strut around the house like the goddess you are. Solo dance parties are definitely encouraged, but not required.
