How To Organize Your Lingerie in 3 Easy Steps

When you open up your lingerie drawer, can you easily find what you’re looking for?

Or is it so overflowing, cluttered with undergarments you rarely wear and lacking any sort of system that you end up rummaging through a heap to find those go-to pieces? If the latter scenario sounds familiar, it might be time to organize your lingerie.

The fact is that your bras and panties provide the base for every single ensemble you wear day to night, and they’re the first thing you search for when figuring out what to wear.

So why not make that first step as simple as possible?

You’ll save time, avoid any unnecessary stress and be far more efficient getting ready overall. Not to mention, quality lingerie is an investment, so in order to protect the longevity of those treasured pieces, it’s important to store them properly.

Not sure where to start? Don’t fret. Follow this foolproof guide to getting your lingerie organized.

1.  Ask yourself: To toss or not to toss?

First things first: There’s no way to have an organized lingerie collection when it’s packed with ill-fitting or worn-out pieces, so you’ll want to start by examining each item in your drawers and determining whether it’s worth keeping or not.

Don’t be afraid to be ruthless! Anything that has holes, stretched-out elastic, tears, frayed fabric or broken/missing hooks should be tossed. And since you’re unlikely to reach for an undergarment that’s uncomfortable, you should also throw out any bra that pinches or has wires poking out or panties that itch or dig into your skin. The same goes for bras that have misshapen cups.

Reassess the fit of your bras:

If your breasts spill out of the cups (or don’t fill them up), if it’s loose on the tightest hook, or the straps don’t stay up even when they’re adjusted as tight as they can go, get rid of it.

Donate bras and underwear:

As far as what to do with all those pieces you aren’t keeping, you can donate unused bras and undies to The Salvation Army, Goodwill, or a local battered women’s shelter. Gently used bras can be offered up to an organization like the Bra Recyclers or Bras for a Cause.

2.  Develop a system

Now that you’ve downsized your collection, it’s time to start thinking about how you want to organize everything in your drawers.

When it comes to panties, you might choose to organize by color or style (bikini,  boy short, etc.). Bras can be organized by type (bralette, push-up, strapless/convertible, etc.).

Whichever system you choose, you’ll want to put the ones you wear the most (like the go-to nude T-shirt bra or the basic black thong) toward the front so they’re easily accessible, and the specialty items (a plunge bra in an exotic print or a lacy pair of bright red hipsters) toward the back.

3.  Divide and conquer

Before you place anything back in your drawers, though, consider that certain tools can go a long way in helping you get organized.

In fact, there are linen, plastic, and fiberboard dividers specifically designed to compartmentalize your drawers — that way, you can keep different styles of items separate.

Bras:

Simply stack them from front to back with the cups facing forward, and be careful not to fold the cups, which will cause the fabric to pucker.

Underwear:

When putting panties back in their place, try using the rolling method instead of folding them flat to avoid pesky wrinkles and creases.

Bralettes and non-moulded bras:

Bralettes and other non-padded bras can be folded, but most should be stored flat so that they maintain their shape.

Chemises, slips, and robes:

Chemises and other similar lingerie pieces should be hung on padded hangers in your closet so they’re easy to spot and moreover, so you don’t have to worry about wrinkles.
