These 7 Things Are Killing Your Swimsuits
Let me guess – your month-old swimsuit is already losing its like-new look. You’re only wearing the swimsuit in the sun or the water. After all, that’s what swimsuits are for. So, why is your somewhat new swimsuit already looking tired? It’s likely due to common things you’d never guess would damage your swimsuits. You must know what makes swimsuits age if you want to keep swimsuits looking new.
Here are seven things that are damaging your swimsuits:
1. Drying swimsuits in the dryer.
High-heat is bad for your swimsuits. The heat causes the elastic to warm-up and stretch, then shrink back. Exposing swimsuits to this kind of treatment will wear down the swimsuit and its elastic over time. It’s best to let swimsuits airdry.
2. Hanging swimsuits to dry.
Not every method of air drying is safe for swimsuits. You don’t want to hang your swimsuits to dry because it can stretch the fabric. The wet fabric is heavier, and gravity pulls the swimsuit down. This can result in a distorted fit even after only hanging the swimsuits to dry.
It’s best to lay swimsuits flat on a surface to air dry. This ensures the swimsuit’s weight is distributed evenly and the fit/material won’t be jeopardized.
3. Not rinsing swimsuits after each use.
It’s important to rinse swimsuits after each use to rid them of harmful elements. Your swimsuit is exposed to sunscreen, tanning oils, chlorine or sweat with each wear. These products can wear the fabric down if they are not rinsed off.

4. Exposing swimsuits to hot water.
Hot water is also damaging to swimsuits. The water – like high-heat – can distort the bathing suit’s elastic, fabric and colors overtime. That’s why we suggest never rinsing or washing swimsuits in hot water and reserving one swimsuit for hot tubs. That way, you can let your least favorite swimsuit take the heat (pun intended) in the hot tub, preserving your newest and best suits.
5. Not laundering swimsuits.
You need to launder swimsuits even though you rinse them after each wear. Rinsing a swimsuit drastically reduces the amount of product left in the fabric. However, it doesn’t completely remove the products. You’ll need to wash it with detergent to remove the excess oils.
It’s best to wash your swimsuits by hand to avoid the harshness of a washing machine. If you must machine wash your suit, put into a lingerie mesh bag before tossing it into the machine.
6. Sitting on the side of the pool.
One of my favorite summertime pastimes is sitting on the edge of the pool. But, I’ve learned I must sit on a towel on the edge of the pool. Otherwise, the concrete will pull and snag your bathing suit bottoms. Once those bottoms get snagged, they never look the same.
7. Only having one go-to swimsuit.
Having just one swimsuit may be the culprit of all your swimsuit problems. One damaging element we haven’t mentioned yet is the sun. And, you’re likely always in the sun when wearing your swimsuit. Exposure to sun will fade your swimsuit’s colors overtime, just like the sun does to any piece of fabric.
You’re never giving your swimsuit a break if it’s the only one you wear. This will cause your swimsuit to show early signs of aging – even if you launder it properly and rinse it after each use. You’ll want to have more than one swimsuit in rotation to help preserve the swimsuits’ lifespans.
You spend quite a bit of time finding that perfect swimsuit. And when you do find it, it’s not always inexpensive. Help your favorite swimsuits look better longer by taking a few extra steps to care for them. You’ll be thankful you did when you can still wear the swimsuits two seasons later!
