how should a bra fit

Whether it’s your first bra fitting or your fifteenth, here are five questions to ask your bra fitter at your next fitting!

1.  What is my bra size?

At a bra fitting, the bra fitter will take your measurements (typically at the fullest part of your bust and right under your bust) and determine your bra size based on your measurements and breast shape. She may ask you to try on a few bras to make sure the size is right. During this process, the bra fitter will let you know what your bra size is and pull bras that you might like. She’ll also tell you your bra size.

If your bra size isn’t what you expected, don’t panic. For example, it’s not uncommon to be sized into a DD cup or larger (especially in a smaller band size) if you’ve been wearing a 34B or 36C for your entire life. Bra sizing is different than we think; a D cup might seem big, but there’s quite a difference in size and fit between a 32D and 38D. And, to tell you the truth, the letter doesn’t have as much meaning without a band size in front of it.

2.  Which styles work best for my breast shape?

The bra fitter can help you determine if your breast shape is round, asymmetric, athletic, slender, tear drop, close set, wide set, or outward facing.

Why is this important, you ask? Well, knowing your breast shape helps you figure out which bra styles will fit best. For example, if your breasts are slender, or shallow, you might prefer a push-up bra, demi bra, or balconette bra. Alternatively, if your breasts are evenly full, you might opt for a bralette or unlined bra instead.

3.  How many bras do I actually need?

The number of bras you need will depend on your lifestyle and lingerie care habits.

We recommend keeping three everyday bras, one strapless bra or multi-way bra, two sports bras, and one bralette in rotation. If you’re guilty of throwing your bras into the dryer or wearing the same bra day after day, chances are your bras won’t last longer than a few months.

Remember: You should never wear the same bra two days in a row. Wearing the same bra everyday stretches out the elastic and prevents it from retaining its shape. Bras also trap sweat and moisture, which is another reason to rotate and wash your bras frequently!

4.  How do I care for my new bras?

All bra fitters are trained in lingerie care. Be sure to ask her how to wash your new lingerie if you’re unsure. Fabrics like silk, chiffon, and Chantilly lace need special care. We always suggest picking up a mesh lingerie bag and gentle lingerie detergent next time you’re at your local lingerie store. If you’ve already left the store, check out our helpful bra care guide here for more info.

5.  When should I come back for my next bra fitting?

It might seem silly to think about your next bra fitting when you’re just finishing up your current one, but it’s worth thinking about. Depending on your needs, your bra fitter may suggest coming back in 3-6 months for another fitting. You might be back at the shop sooner if you’re expecting or nursing. In most cases, it’s best to schedule your next appointment 6 months out. We suggest setting a date in your calendar, scheduling it in person or over the phone, and setting a reminder on your phone or email so you don’t forget.
