how to choose a bra

Choosing a bra is never easy. Even when you have drawers full of beautiful bras, it can still feel like you have nothing to wear.

If you’re unsure which bra to wear, we’re here to help.

Here’s how to choose the right bra for any occasion or outfit:

Consider the occasion

Wondering which bra you should wear? Consider the occasion first. If you’re going to a work party or networking event, it’s typically best to wear a neutral bra that provides coverage and is out of sight. Hidden support is key here. Full coverage t-shirt bras and molded bras will do the trick. A t-shirt bra or contour bra provides a seamless, rounded shape while the full coverage fit keeps breast tissue comfortable and completely contained.

Getting ready for a fun night out? Opt for a plunge bra or pretty longline bra decked out in lace. A longline bra can also be worn as outerwear, so don’t be afraid to pair this pretty piece with a high waisted skirt or jeans and show off your lingerie. Weekends call for lounge bras or bralettes, wire-free bras and wireless bras can be worn anytime, strapless and plunge bras work perfectly under strapless tops and dresses with plunging necklines.

Consider your outfit

Choose lingerie that complements your outfit. That doesn’t mean that your bras and underwear have to match (we’re fans of mixing and matching our lingerie), but it does mean that you’ll want to consider your outfit. T-shirts and fitted tops and dresses call for seamless contour bras and seamless underwear underneath. With a slouchy sweater or looser fitting top, you can get away with a beautiful lace bra with unlined cups or a daring plunge bra with pretty details. It’s totally up to you.

When it comes to strapless tops and dresses, your best bet is a well-fitting strapless bra. Tucking the straps of your favorite plunge bra into your dress may save you a trip to the lingerie store, but it won’t be nearly as supportive as an actual strapless bra. When shopping for a supportive strapless bra, look for a wide bra band and anti-slip silicone tape on the inside of the cups and wings (avoid silicone tape if you have a latex allergy). Side boning (to keep the bra band from rolling up) and molded contour cups (to keep your breast tissue lifted and in place) may also be worth considering in a strapless bra.

Consider the fit

The bra you choose will come down to the occasion and your outfit, among a few other factors. As with any undergarment, the fit is key. Try to avoid wearing the ill-fitting bra in the back of your closet that you’ve been meaning to throw away. If you’re struggling with finding bras that fit well and feel amazing, we suggest visiting your local lingerie store for a bra fitting. The bra fitters at your local lingerie store are there to make recommendations and help you find bras that fit. From a new bra or two to a whole new wardrobe, they’ll pick out bras that will make getting dressed in the morning even easier.
