supportive swimsuits

When summer starts to roll around, it’s time to go shopping for a new swimsuit that’s both stylish and supportive to sport on the beach or by the pool. If only that was an easy task! You certainly don’t have to compromise comfort to look chic, though. As long as you know what to look for, you’ll be able to find a bathing suit that you feel confident in, whether you’re simply lounging on the sand, swimming in the waves, or playing a round of beach volleyball. So, grab your beach read, lather on the sunblock, and take these tips into account while shopping for a supportive, chic swimsuit.

Know your bra size

You wouldn’t buy a size small, medium, or large, bra, so why would you buy a bikini top with that sizing? While this kind of size range works fine for one-piece bathing suits, If you’re buying separates, opt for styles with tops that go by bra sizing (with both a band and cup size) to get maximum support and lift. If you haven’t had a professional bra fitting in the last six months, head to the nearest department store or lingerie boutique. If you know your proper size, you have a much better chance of finding a bikini top that fits flawlessly.

Aim for adjustability

Adjustable straps can be helpful, whether that means a halter that ties (which you can tighten or loosen as needed) or bra-like straps with adjustable buckles. An adjustable band can make a big difference, though, as a massive majority of the support in a swimsuit comes from this component. If the top on a two-piece has an adjustable band, you can achieve a more customized (and therefore probably better) fit. At the very least, though, you want to make sure the band fits as snugly as possible without being uncomfortable at all.

Don’t underestimate underwire

Separated cups are a game-changer when it comes to swimsuits. If you want your boobs to look separated, shaped, and overall fabulous, this is a feature you should prioritize. Underwire can also play a major role in a swimsuit’s support. Particularly if you are full busted, you should likely seek out bathing suits with wire for a little extra reassurance that they look lifted and stay in place all day.

Test it out

Before you make any purchases, you have to put your bathing suit to the test. First, jump up and down and notice whether your breasts stay put (this is especially important if you plan to be active in your swimsuit). Next, reach your arms over your head and make sure that you don’t spill out of the cups and the band doesn’t ride up too much. Lean forward and make sure that you’re still secure in the swimsuit top. If not, you may need to opt for a different size or style — like one with a more full-coverage top.

Swimsuit season shouldn’t inspire any shopping dread. In fact, it offers the perfect opportunity to get in touch with the aspects of your body that you love — and show them off! Keep the aforementioned guidance in mind while browsing for swimwear and you’re sure to find some pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin.

We Highly Recommend

If you’re shopping for a swimsuit that fits your bust perfectly, it’s always a good idea to seek out a second opinion. We know how hard it is to find swimsuit tops that stay in place, especially when you’re shopping on your own. If you’re full-busted and you’ve struggled with finding a flattering swimsuit top or if you’ve never tried a bra-sized swim top before, it’s time to let a bra fitter help.

Many specialty lingerie boutiques offer bra fittings and carry a selection of swimsuits and swimsuit tops. Their expert bra fitters can help take the pain and frustration out of swimsuit shopping and do all the work for you. They can help you find a bra-sized swimsuit top with the support and lift that you’re looking for and they can also help you find new everyday bras that fit well and feel good. Even better, their product knowledge can save you time and money. Plus, they know where all of the best swimsuits are hiding.
