how to care for lingerie

How well do you care for your lingerie? Most of us think that we’re taking extremely good care of the things that we own, but how can you be sure?

It should come as no real surprise that your lingerie is delicate. It’s made from fine material. That’s why you should take the utmost care when it comes to washing it and looking after it.

When you invest in a beautiful piece of lingerie, you want it to last. That goes without saying. Your fine bras and briefs are the foundation of your outfits. The last thing you want is to buy some beautiful new pieces to add to your collection, only for them to be ruined just a few weeks later.

So, how could you be destroying your lingerie? Well, there are a lot of things that you may be doing wrong here. If you’re guilty of any of these bad habits, it could be time to change your ways and start taking much better care of your lingerie.

If you want your lingerie to last, this is what you should avoid:

1.  Stuffing your lingerie in a small drawer

Where do you keep your bras and briefs? It may seem like a funny question. We all have a lingerie drawer, right? Well, perhaps we shouldn’t. Stuffing all of your delicates into a small-space drawer could be a real mistake. Since the material is quite fragile, you may find that scrunching it up actually ends up damaging it. Yikes.

When it comes to how to store your lingerie, you need to put a little more thought into things. The last thing you want to do is ruin the material by being careless and not thinking about the best way in which to keep it looking newer for longer. In reality, the last thing that you should be doing is keeping your bras in a drawer.

Instead, it makes much more sense to hang them up. You can get clothes hangers that have small clips on them for your bras. When you store them in this way, they will have room to breathe and also allow the material to hang naturally. Make a little room in your closet for your lingerie. You seriously will not regret it.

2.  Washing your bras far too often

Washing your bra on a regular basis is essential. However, you shouldn’t be washing the same bra over and over again all the time. When you don’t have enough bras in your closet, it can be oh-so-easy to make this mistake. The key is to get a wide variety of bras so that you can rotate what you wear on a daily basis.

In truth, the more bras you have, the less you will need to wash them. If you’re wearing the same bra all of the time (and washing it several times per month), it’s certain to start to look old and worn. That goes without saying. Before you know it, you will start seeing some of the major signs that you should toss your bra. Oops.

3.  Failing to hand-wash delicate items

Not all lingerie is suitable for the washing machine. When you buy a new bra or a new pair of briefs, you need to make sure that you read the label inside them. Sometimes, you will need to hand-wash pieces, rather than putting them in the machine.

It may sound like a lot of hassle, but it could be what it takes to make sure that your lingerie stays looking as good as new for as long as possible. Remember to always read the directions on the label (or online) and follow them exactly.

4.  Not protecting your lingerie properly

When you do machine-wash your delicate lingerie, it really pays to protect it as much as possible. One of the things you can do is put the machine on a delicate setting so that you don’t end up stressing the material too much. You could also use a mesh lingerie washing bag. All you need to do is put your delicate items in the bag before you pop them in the washing machine. That extra level of protection should make a real difference!

5.  Putting your lingerie in the dryer

Are you guilty of putting your lingerie in the dryer after you’ve washed it? While you may be short on time, this mistake could end up ruining your bras and briefs more than you know. Most dryer cycles are far too harsh and hot for your lingerie.

Make a point of leaving your lingerie to dry naturally whenever you decide to wash it. Sure, it may take longer than you’re used to but it will mean that you don’t put pressure on the fabric at all. It’s a small price to pay for the lingerie lasting.

So, are you guilty of any of these bad habits? If you’ve been mistreating your lingerie, it’s time for a change. Take the advice here and start looking after your underwear like you know that you should. Once you get into the habit of treating it well, you will see what a huge difference it ends up making to how long it lasts. Simple.
