plus size convertible bra
There’s no denying that convertible bras can make your life a whole lot easier. After all, since you can change the strap style, they allow you to wear a wide range of tops and dresses. It’s hard to beat that kind of versatility. Still, convertible bras come with their own unique challenges. In order to find one that truly works for you, it’s important to look for certain key features. That way, you don’t have to worry about awkwardly pulling it up constantly or adjusting the straps all night.
So, what should you look for in a convertible bra? Keep these elements in mind on your next shopping trip and you’re sure to find a winner.

Molded cups

Convertible bras come in many different forms, from bandeau style with no separated cups to a contour convertible style. If you’re looking for support, separation, and shaping altogether, you’ll definitely want to choose a convertible bra with molded cups. This type is especially preferable for those with larger breasts who are seeking some extra coverage. As an added bonus, the thicker, seamless cups on molded convertible bras provide more nipple coverage and are less likely to show under a top or dress.

Snug band

You may or may not know by now that the band provides most of the support, and that’s particularly true with a strapless style — one form of the convertible bra you’ll no doubt be taking advantage of. Make sure that the band fits super snug, as this is the component that’s doing most of the work to hold you up. You may actually find that you need to go down a band size from what you typically wear. Of course, it shouldn’t be so tight that it’s digging into you, cutting off circulation or uncomfortable in any way. A good test is to jump up and down in the bra and make sure that band doesn’t ride up. You should also try sliding a finger or two under the band (if any more can easily fit, you’ll know the band is too loose).

Wide bra band

Speaking of the band, it’s best to opt for a convertible bra that has a wide band, especially if you’re full busted. A wider band is overall sturdier, meaning it’ll be more effective at supporting heavier breasts. Look for a bra with a band that’s at least 3 to 4 inches tall in the back. Bonus: A wide band also helps to prevent unsightly back rolls.

Anti-slip silicone

Some convertible and strapless bras contain strips of silicone on the inside of the bra, especially along the top and bottom of the band or cups in the front. This feature is super helpful as the silicone sticks to your skin, making the bra less likely to slip downward. Make sure that if you’re wearing a convertible bra with silicone that you don’t wear body lotion or baby powder on your chest because it will make the silicone less effective by reducing the friction in that area. Some people are allergic to silicone, too. If your skin is sensitive to this material, consider a convertible longline bra — the additional material underneath the cups can work wonders in the support department.

A flawless fit

Here’s the thing about convertible bras: They’re only going to work if they’re the right size. So, have you been fitted somewhat recently? If it’s been six months or more since you last got a professional fitting, pay a visit to your local department store or lingerie boutique just to make sure you’re wearing the correct size before you invest in any new convertible bras.

Remember:

Convertible bras are a staple in any woman’s closet because they can accommodate anything from a halter dress to a strapless top or a one-shouldered blouse. Take the previous tips into account while shopping in order to find a convertible bra that’s comfortable, supportive, and flattering. And remember: If you’re large breasted, you’ll want to shop for convertible bras made by brands that specialize in D-cup sizes and above, as they’ll be better constructed to accommodate your bust.
