bra shopping

Once upon a time, I despised bra shopping. In fact, I basically avoided it like the plague. I would put off shopping for new bras until mine were straight-up unwearable. And even then, I would drag my feet on purchasing a few new ones. Now, I’ve learned to appreciate the process. But it took some time for me to figure out how to make it more enjoyable. Having a plan in terms of what I was looking for and which stores stocked my size/go-to brands was certainly helpful. But it didn’t exactly make picking out a couple new T-shirt bras or demi-cup bras thrilling.

For some women, it’s frustrating to go bra shopping because they can’t seem to find any that fit well. For others, it’s the process of trying to find the right styles that’s stressful. Some may simply find bra shopping to be boring. Fortunately, we have solutions to suggest for all of these scenarios.

Next time you go bra shopping, try some of these foolproof tips to make it stress-free and — dare I say it? — downright fun.

Get fitted

I know what you’re thinking. What’s fun about being measured? But the truth is, a professional fitting involves so much more than just finding out your correct band size and cup size. Once the fitter has figured out your size, they will usually make specific product suggestions for you that are well suited to your breast shape. And that’s the fun part: you may be super surprised by which bra styles work well for you. For example, if you’ve been wearing full-cup bras for years, but you find that you don’t totally fill out the tops of the cups and the straps are set a little narrow on your wide shoulders, a fitter might recommend a balconette bra, which has shorter cups to fill out and wider set straps.

Besides, knowing your proper size will automatically make bra shopping more enjoyable because you won’t have to try a zillion on to resolve any fit issues you’re facing, and you won’t end up having to return any that are ill-fitting later on.

Go with friends

If bra shopping feels a little humdrum to you, there’s hardly a better way to add some excitement into the task than bringing along a girlfriend. Plus, your pal can offer advice in the fitting room — it’s always nice to have a second opinion on what looks good.

Bring along someone you feel super comfortable with — and ideally, someone who genuinely enjoys shopping. Afterward, you can treat yourselves to coffee, a cocktail, or lunch for a successful shopping trip.

…Or with a special someone

There are so many perks to bra shopping with a significant other. For one, you may learn a lot about what kinds of styles, colors, and fabrics they find the sexiest. And to boot, they’ll learn about your size and preferences, which will help them in the future if they’re picking out lingerie for you as a gift.

If you feel comfortable going to a store to shop together, that’s one option. However, if it’s your first time picking out bras together, you can also shop online from the comfort of your own home. Remember: While it’s certainly important to take their tastes and opinion into account, your preferences take precedence as you’re the one that will be wearing these bras. Have an honest, open discussion while shopping about what you like and why it works for your breast shape, wardrobe, etc. and you’re sure to find some pieces that appeal to both of you.

Try shopping at a smaller boutique

There’s no doubt that there are advantages to shopping for bras at a department store. The main benefit is that they tend to have a much larger inventory, and thus, a much wider selection than smaller stores. Still, shopping at a department store can feel overwhelming to some. With so many products to choose from, bra shopping can start to feel a tad stressful. If that sounds familiar, try hitting up your local lingerie boutiques instead.

While independent boutiques may not carry as many brands or styles, you’ll often get a more personalized shopping experience. Since the staff are running a much smaller store, they may be able to give you more attention, offering helpful recommendations while you’re browsing and in the fitting room as well.

There’s no reason why bra shopping should feel like a hassle or cause a headache. Take these tips into account and hopefully, you’ll be able to make this necessary process as pleasant as possible.
