bra fitting

Nervous about your bra fitting? Don’t be! Bra fittings are an important part of lingerie shopping. In a bra fitting, a professional bra fitter determines your bra size and brings you bras to try on based on your bra size, breast shape, and a few other factors. This is the perfect time for you to tell her if you have any complaints about your current bras or if you’re experiencing any fit issues (cups gaping, band riding up your back, straps falling off your shoulders, etc.) Her goal is to help you find bras that fit well, feel good, and work within your budget.

Whether you’re preparing for your first bra fitting or your fifteenth, here are four things bra fitters want you to know:

1.  You don’t have to take your bra off

If your bra fitter uses a tape measure during your fitting, she’ll likely take your overbust measurement (measured horizontally at the fullest part of the bust) over your current bra. You won’t need to take your bra off. Bra fitters want you to be comfortable during the fitting – they’ll respect your personal space and privacy. Depending on which you prefer, the bra fitter can stay with you in the fitting room or wait outside while you’re trying on bras. If you’re comfortable with it, you can also ask her to “check the fit” of each bra – meaning she’ll step into the fitting room with you and assess the fit of each bra to make sure it’s fitting you properly.

2.  Walk-ins are welcome

At most lingerie boutiques, you don’t have to make an appointment for a bra fitting. You can simply visit the store during opening hours and they’ll be happy to fit you and help you shop for new bras. Do keep in mind that if you’re visiting on the weekend or during the holiday season, there may be a longer wait for a bra fitting. And if you think you might need more than 30 minutes to get fitted and shop, it might be a good idea to make an appointment or call ahead that day and let the staff know what you need and when you’ll be in. Also, don’t forget to bring your special occasion dress with you if you’re shopping for undergarments for it or a favorite t-shirt if you’re shopping for everyday bras so you can see if the bras will show under your shirts.

3.  Bra fittings are typically free

Most lingerie boutiques provide bra fittings for free. While there are some stores that charge for the fitting, they typically let you apply the charge to a purchase in the store.

Why would a lingerie store offer a bra fitting for free? This is one big reason: Lingerie stores want you to buy bras in the right size and be so happy with them that you won’t need to return them. Think of it this way: How many times have you bought something while shopping on your own and then returned it later because it ended up being the wrong size? Bra fittings help lingerie stores get the sizing right the first time – which saves you time and money because you won’t have to make a return trip.

4.  Lingerie stores are judgment-free zones

Don’t worry about doing your hair or putting on a cute outfit to go bra shopping – lingerie stores are judgment-free zones. It doesn’t matter if your hair is a mess or your shirt has stains on it or you’ve gained ten pounds since your last fitting. Bra fitters have seen it all and they’re not there to judge. They’re focused on helping you find bras that make you feel amazing – they’re not judging your body, or your outfit, or your beautiful makeup-free face.
