what determines breast size

Your boobs are interesting assets. You probably know that boobs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but there are likely things you didn’t know about them.

Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about your boobs:

1.  Your areolas have purpose.

Your areolas aren’t just pretty – they serve an important purpose during breastfeeding. There are little glands around the edges of each areola that produce a scent when nursing. The baby recognizes the scent and is drawn to the breast.

The color of your areolas is meaningful, too. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the areolas become darker in color. Babies first see darks and lights, so the baby is able to see the darker colored areola and go toward it.

2.  Most breast lumps aren’t cancerous.

Eight in ten lumps in the breast aren’t breast cancer. Instead, a lump may be a benign cyst or a collection of glands. Of course, you should always consult your doctor if you notice or are worried about a lump.

3.  Sleeping on your back is optimal for your boobs.

The healthiest sleep position for your boobs is on your back. This position provides the most support and allows your boobs to rest symmetrically while you sleep.

4.  Genetics determine your boobs’ shape and size.

What determines breast size? Your genes affect your hormone levels, and those hormone levels decide your breast density. Your genetics and hormones determine your fat tissue to breast tissue ratio, which determines your breast shape, size and appearance.

5.  You can inherit your boobs from either side of the family.

Wondering how you have big boobs while you mom has smaller ones? Maybe you inherited your bust from your dad’s side. You can inherit your boobs from your paternal or maternal sides of the family.

6.  Most boobs aren’t symmetrical.

Most boobs aren’t symmetrical. Some women have one boob that is bigger than the other or one boob that is higher than the other. And, it’s completely normal.

7.  You’re likely wearing the wrong bra size.

You’ve probably heard that 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size. That means you could be, too! The best way to know your bra size is to get a bra fitting.

8.  There are several types of nipples.

Just like boobs, nipples don’t come in one shape or size. There are at least four different types of nipples. Nipples can be flat, protruding, inverted, unclassified or a combination of any of these types.

9.  Nipple hair is totally normal.

Did you think you were the only one battling unwanted hairs on your nipples or areolas? You’re certainly not! It’s normal to find random hairs around your breasts because there are hair follicle and oil glands there.

10.  The boobs change during your period.

Ever feel like your boobs fluctuate in size and texture? That’s because they do! Your boobs go through changes throughout your menstrual cycle. These cycle phases cause your boobs to go from lumpy, to soft and small, to full and firm, etc.

There ya have it! So, tell us…Did you learn something new about your boobs?
