what is a bra fitting like

Getting ready for your next bra fitting? It’s normal to wonder what a bra fitting might be like if you’ve never had one before. Here’s what to expect at your next bra fitting:

Setting An Appointment

Most lingerie stores don’t require appointments and take walk-ins for bra fittings. But, if you’re shopping for new bras or lingerie for a special occasion, it might be worth it to schedule an appointment in advance. Saturdays and Sundays are often the busiest days for lingerie stores, especially during the holidays. So, if you’re planning on shopping on the weekend or before Valentine’s Day or Christmas, consider calling ahead to book an appointment and make sure to set aside plenty of time for your shopping trip. And don’t forget to call ahead to check the store hours!

Checking-In

Whether you’ve scheduled an appointment or not, be sure to let the sales associates know that you’re there for a bra fitting. A smaller store may only have one or two bra fitters available at a time for fittings. By letting them know you’re there for a fitting, they can check you in and make sure you’re comfortable if you have to wait.

The Fitting Room

The fitting room is where the bra fitting takes place and the majority of where you’ll spend your time at the store.

A bra fitter will typically start by introducing herself. She’ll also ask you a few questions about your current bras. She wants to know what your lifestyle is like (are you running around all day chasing after little ones?), what your wardrobe is like (do you wear a lot of t-shirts?), what you’re looking for (are you in need of a sports bra or new everyday bras?), and what your budget looks like (so she doesn’t bring in bras that are out of your budget).

Once she has an idea of what you need, she’ll likely ask you to remove your shirt, take your measurements (typically across the fullest part of the bust and under the bust), figure out your breast shape (are your breasts projected? Shallow? Wide set? Close set?), and determine your bra size. At that point, she’ll probably leave the fitting room for a moment or two and start pulling you bras based on what you said you like.

Then, she’ll either stay in the fitting room with you while you’re trying on bras to check the fit or give you time to try on the bras and check in with you periodically to see if there is anything she can bring you (a different size or color, perhaps).

After The Fitting Room

Once you leave the fitting room, she’ll probably bring you to the cash wrap to help you purchase your new bras. This is the perfect time to ask about how to care for your new bras and if you’ll need anything else to keep them looking new for a long time. She might suggest buying a second bra (if you find a style you really love), so you can give it a break in between wears. She might also suggest a lingerie wash and mesh lingerie bag if you typically wash your lingerie in the washing machine. Lastly, she’ll thank you for your purchase, offer to call you if anything new comes in that she thinks you’ll like, and remind you to come back and visit in six months for your next fitting.

So there you have it: a typical bra fitting in a nutshell. Pretty easy, right?
