bra fitting - Ask A Bra Fitter: Here's How To Have The Best Bra Fitting

You’ve made the appointment or picked a day for your bra fitting. Now you’re wondering if there’s anything you should do before you visit the store.

For many women, the idea of shopping for a new bra can be a major source of anxiety – but it doesn’t have to be. You’ve already made the right choice by choosing to visit a local lingerie boutique for a bra fitting. The expert bra fitters at lingerie boutiques have helped hundreds of women find beautiful, supportive bras that feel comfortable and amazing on. They know what to look for when determining your bra size and how to select the best bras for you to try on. Rest assured, you’re in good hands.

Whether it’s your first bra fitting or your fifteenth, here are a few tips for getting the most out of your next bra fitting:

Come prepared

Bring a favorite t-shirt so you can see what your new bras will look like under a shirt. For a seamless look, you want to make sure there aren’t any seams showing under your clothes. Also, have a budget in mind. Determining what you can afford to spend ahead of time and communicating your budget to your bra fitter during the fitting can help her pick bras within your budget and avoid the disappointment of falling in love with a bra you can’t afford.

Dress for comfort

As much as we love getting dressed up, a bra fitting isn’t the most practical place for your fanciest outfits. You’ll be trying on a bunch of bras, so dress for comfort. A loose-fitting shirt or cozy sweater, a pair of soft leggings, and a comfy pair of flats will be easy to take on and off in the fitting room. Also, avoid applying self-tanner or perfume before your visit as it could transfer to the bras that you try on but don’t end up taking.

Give yourself plenty of time

A typical bra fitting can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on what you need. For example, if you’re looking to replace your favorite everyday bra, a bra fitter may only need to check the fit of the new size you’re trying on to make sure it fits best. On the other hand, if you’re shopping for a new lingerie wardrobe, be sure to give yourself at least 45 minutes to an hour at the store. You’ll need plenty of time to get fitted, shop for bras, and try everything. No one likes to rush when they’re shopping, so schedule your yourself some “me time” and do it stress-free.

Be open-minded

You wouldn’t believe how many women are wearing the wrong bra size. As a bra fitter, it’s my job to help you find bras that fit well and feel amazing on. This could involve a larger cup size or band size so you get the best fit. At the end of the day, band sizes and cup sizes are just letters and numbers – they don’t define you. It might seem shocking at first to hear that you wear a different bra size than you’re used to but remember: your bra size will likely change a few times throughout your life. The bras you wore in high school or before your first pregnancy may not fit now. That’s normal.

Also, a cup size doesn’t mean anything without a band size in front of it. For example, all DD cup sizes are not created equal – a 34DD will fit different than a 36DD and a 38DD and so on. You might find the best fit in your bra sister size or in a bigger or smaller band or cup size. After all, the point of a bra fitting is to help you find bras that are comfortable and it’s a lot easier when you go into the fitting with an open mind.

Bra fittings are crucial to finding a supportive bra. Without a bra fitting, you may struggle with bra shopping or sizing. But with an expert’s help, you can find bras that fit incredible, make your clothes fit phenomenally, and give you a little confidence boost too!
